John Madden, a fixture in NFL broadcast booths for 30 years, has decided to retire, he announced Thursday in a statement released by NBC Sports.

John Madden discusses what the Hall of Fame means to him.
Madden, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and former Super Bowl-winning coach of the Oakland Raiders, has been a game analyst and TV personality since walking away from coaching in 1979.

"It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall," Madden said. "I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not."

"It's been such a great ride," he added. The NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion -- It still is. ... It's still fun and that's what it makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision.

"I still love every part of it -- the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people... but I know this is the right time."

Madden worked as lead analyst for all four networks broadcasting NFL football games, forming tandems with Pat Summerall at CBS and Fox and Al Michaels at ABC and NBC. He won 16 Emmy awards for outstanding sports analyst/personality.

His last game in the booth was Pittsburgh's Super Bowl victory over Arizona.

Madden led the Raiders to an overall record of 103-32-7, seven AFC West titles and a victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI. His .750 winning percentage remains the highest of any coach in NFL history.

Hmmmm.....73 years old. The same age as Harry Kalas, who just died on Monday.

Wonder if Harry's death helped seal the deal for ol' John. Maybe he figured it was time to just enjoy what's left of life.

Best of luck, John!

You're a true pro football legend in every sense of the word.

Jesus, I knew he was a great coach but never knew his winning percentage. Madden is one of those rare broadcasters..........he knew what he was talking about and had the experience to back it up.

I love the screen where he would draw out the plays and show you what happened. Gonna miss that guy.

It's not like there isn't any evidence of historical precedent for this, ya know.

He's been the subject of much criticism over the years (much of it undeserved, in my view), but regardless of your opinion, football will not be the same without him. Best of luck Mr. Madden.

I celebrated the retirement of John Madden tonight. Hooting and hollering at the top of my lungs, knowing that I can watch football and not have to do a shot every time something totally f'in obvious is said by Madden.

"Oh really? The defense needs to play all 4 quarters to win? Do tell more, Johnnie!"

Will they keep calling it Madden Football or will he become irrelevant down the road? Also, what will Frank Caliendo do now that kids won't know who he's impersonating?

There are no coaches like John Madden left in the NFL. He would take no shit from his players and treated none like prima donnas. And he had his hands full with the old Oakland Raiders! He was so fucking close to going to several Super Bowls...

His announcing was simple, but football is a simple sport-not as complicated as ESPN tries to make it by over-explaining everything!

So does Dennis Miller get the gig now?
Fuck, I hope not...I'm so sick to death of his metaphoric references to obscure shit no one cares about to begin with. And that's just his stand-up.

I bet the inside of Madden's bus smells like an outhouse in July.

I'm gonna miss the Maddenism's-

Al Michaels:...so its first and 10 at the Packer's 46 yard line with that run.

Madden: ..uh yeah, and whenever you talk about Green Bay, ya gotta talk about this here....see that?....***circles tailgater with tellustrator***.whenever you go to a footbal game, you gotta have a lot of food....see like this guy...he just puts that stuff on there like that, and uhhh...ya make a sandwich out of it, see? And then whenever you get a whole bunch of this, you gotta have some of this stuff...
