I've been listening to Elvis since I was 4 years old. I even like the Vegas Elvis stuff, too.

Aloha from Hawaii has to be the greatest concert I've ever seen (obviously I wasnt there or alive when it happened) and I prefer the rehearsal concert. Voice was so strong especially on songs like American Trilogy, What Now My Love, Its Over, Can't Help Falling In Love etc.. I found the VHS Aloha in my basement, watched it over 200 times at least, and have recently bought the Vinyl.

My uncle happens to be an ETA, Jay Zanier. He was ranked 7th in the 1st ETA competition in Memphis.

I remember watching that as a kid in the early seventies. The next day at school, everyone was talking about the incredible, long haired drummer (Ronnie Tutt). From that one tv showing, Tutt managed to influence an entire generation of players with his powerful drumming. Amazing stuff. Elvis was pretty much near the top of his game then.

If you can find it, pick up the two disc DVD re-release that came out a few years ago. It includes a wealth of bonus material, including the rehearsal and some tracks left off the original release.

And while you're buying Elvis DVD's, be sure to get the Three DVD 68 Comeback Special box set. It's amazing how much material they actually recorded to make a one hour TV show. And the stuff that didn't make the network cut is just as good as the stuff that did. Or actually better, in some cases. I thought the sets with Elvis and his original trio from the Sun Records days were far superior to the production numbers myself, but then I always preferred the raw rockabilly Elvis to the Vegas/Hollywood Elvis.

Nothing wrong with a little self promotion. Speaking of which, Elvis, any chance you have that tune in a download able format?

You could always use the FlashGot plugin for Firefox, which will grab Youtube vids, and pretty much any other video that gets embedded here or elsewhere.

Great fucking drummer! I remember watching that special, too. If I remember correctly, that was the first time I ever heard of something being broadcast via satellite. I'm sure that wasn't the first thing ever........ The Beatles did 'All You Need Is Love' but that was the first time I ever heard of satellite broadcast.

"All You Need Is Love" was part of "Our World" which was the first worldwide satellite broadcast. But it was 19 seperate performances from different countries, where the Elvis "Aloha from Hawaii" was the first actual live concert broadcast live by satellite to the whole world.

So there's the difference. One was a coordinated series of events (though still impressive for 1967) the other a single live show.

From what I recall, it wasn't actually live here in the continental U.S. For one reason or another, it was shown some three or four months after the rest of the planet saw it.

Nice!

Just finished ordering it :)

I also grabbed the Elvis Lives DVD, the 25th anniversary concert they put on in 2002. Alot of songs from Aloha are done, with the living members of his original band. Both cost me $48 together, and HMV wanted $55 for one of them.

By the way, big thanks to the guy that started this thread by posting that Danny O'Keefe tune. Nicely done.

For myself, I side with FORD in preferring the early, hard rockin' Elvis. Hell, even John Lennon has been quoted as saying (when greeted with the news of Presley's death in 1977) "Elvis died when he went in the Army."

The thing is, I was still a young, impressionable kid when I saw that Hawaii show, and would not make such grown up determinations about personal preference until over a decade and a half later.

Crap, the guy could have sang with Led Zeppelin. If you think I'm kidding, I have several hours worth of Zep boots where the band covers the man's tunes. Jimmy Page maintains the first song that got him interested in the guitar was Presley's "Baby, Let's Play House" (with Scotty Moore on lead guitar).

Yep, Elvis was special. No, most of us never got to the "embossed dinner plate collectible" level of admiration for the guy, yet perhaps that's a blessing in and of itself.

The guy quite simply is still..."The King".

I can appreciate Elvis up to '72 or 3.

I can see the point very clearly. Up until the point Elvis registered for duty, he was a bad-ass, revolutionary act. Under the mind-numbing "preservationist" care of his manager, not only did he start recording softer, less threatening product, yet he soon began a career (post Army) of theatrical releases the soundtracks of which yielded less "Love Me Tender" type tunes and more dismal things like "Do The Clam" (I'm not kidding: YouTube - Elvis Presley Do The Clam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xvVwCMimkE)).

Those drawn to the original, take no prisoners sneer of early Presley were certainly let down by the Elvis films. And the evidence is on record.

Like I said above, these opinions did not hit me until a long time after the fellow died. We are all open to our own interpretations of things.

Lennon saying that after Elvis died just struck me as odd.

The Beatles were watching Hendrix, and Jimi was watching Elvis.
They all liked the 68 show. While he didn't prove to be as influential, Elvis did prove that he still had it in him to rock out-which was definitely not gonna happen with the fab 4 in a town near you anytime soon.
Maybe the Beatles took themselves too seriously when they went Dylan-ish with their lyrics and overproduced albums that could never be played live, they had no desire to play the old stuff, or it was just too late for them to co-exist as a unit anymore? I'm not a Beatles historian.

John would probably have said he himself wasn't as relevant as he was 10 years ago....I just don't know where he was going with that one.

Maybe...

Watching and reading interviews from those cats from that period, they seem to look at things changing so fast...

I remember Lennon mentioning how it had been nearly two years about something regarding Paul maybe, and Jimi looking just two or three months into the future and seeing the whole music world change...which it did...

I hear ya, but I don't hate it...

I expected it to be more than it was, and i'm sure you did as well...

I doubt he had much control over anything, but you would think that between McCartney and Lynne, they could have really made it something special...

Oh well, I guess...

But sheephider, you need to do some ELO research...

And somehow, that reminded me, I should have included The Bee Gees on that list...

1. The classic opening to "Hurt", a F#4.
2. The end G4 in "It´s now or never".
3. A very good G4 from "Unchained melody" (live version) from the Moody Blue CD.
4. Excellent G#4 from the opening of "Rags to riches".
5. An A4 from "Surrender", a rare high note from his early career, circa 1961.
6. An A4 which then lands on a G4, from "American trilogy" from the live Aloha Hawaii CD.
7. Very powerful A4 from "How great thou art" live from the CBS special in 1977. This picture actually shows an elvis impersonator, sorry for that, it fooled me! I wouldn´t have been fooled by his voice though!
8. The classic live ending to "How great thou art" where Elvis goes one way (up to Bb4) and JD Sumner goes another...elvis often repeated this ending and this clip is actually the 2nd ending.
9. A rare extra high note from a live version of "Rags to riches" from New year´s Eve 1976.
10. An A4 to B4 from the Elvis 1977 CBS special, song is "Hurt".
11. A fantastic B4 from his last concert, 26th June 1977, song is "Hurt".
12. A rare extra note from the "hurt" ending (which he often repeated, sometimes the whole song!), a short C5 (tenor high C). From Buffalo June 25th 1976.
13. a somewhat more sustained C5 from "America the beautiful" live 21st March 1976. the impersonator picture once again!
14. His highest full voice note ever, a C#5 (the last "You") from "Big Bossman" from 19th July 1975.

Now time for his lower register:
15. a G2 from "Teddy Bear".
16. a G2 from "He´ll have to go".
17. a short F2 from "Trying to get to you" from the 1977 CBS special.
18. here it starts to get debatable...some whispery E2:s with an occasional help from JD Sumner, the intro to "I got a woman" live.
19. same here but a D2 by JD which elvis possibly adds to.
20. Great clip from "It´s now or never" live june 1977 where Elvis does a short B4 and a short E2!

I can see the point very clearly. Up until the point Elvis registered for duty, he was a bad-ass, revolutionary act. Under the mind-numbing "preservationist" care of his manager, not only did he start recording softer, less threatening product, yet he soon began a career (post Army) of theatrical releases the soundtracks of which yielded less "Love Me Tender" type tunes and more dismal things like "Do The Clam" (I'm not kidding:

Are you thinking of 'Clambake'? To date, that was the lowest point in The King's career.

It's Polk Salad, sometimes referred to as Poke Salad which was a food eaten by poor southern cotton pickers in the late 19th to the early 20th century when times were bad...
