UFC signs Silva-Griffin blockbuster

Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White made good on his promise to land a significant fight for suddenly under siege middleweight champion Anderson Silva, telling Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday that he had signed a deal for Silva to face ex-light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in the co-main event of UFC 101 in Philadelphia on Aug. 8.

Regarded by many as the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, Silva has come under a barrage of criticism for his performances in his last two fights, including from White. White said he was embarrassed by Silva’s performance in a decision victory over Thales Leites at UFC 97 in Montreal.

That came on the heels of a questionable performance against Patrick Cote at UFC 90 in Chicago in October in which it appeared that Silva was toying with Cote.

White wanted to find a fighter who would challenge Silva, winner of a UFC record nine consecutive fights, and believes he has done it by signing Griffin.

“Forrest loved the idea and said he’d do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is,” White said. “So we got the deal.”

The fight will be the co-main event in the UFC’s first foray into Philadelphia, sharing top billing with a lightweight title fight between B.J. Penn and No. 1 contender Kenny Florian.

Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, said the champion is excited by the opportunity to face Griffin, who took the light heavyweight title from Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in July, but lost it in December to Rashad Evans.

He said Griffin has a complete game and has a big name, which makes the fight more interesting to Silva.

“It’s a great fight for him and he’s anxious and excited about it,” Soares said. “Forrest is a bigger, stronger guy with a lot of cardio and he’s the full package. The other thing Anderson likes about it is that Forrest is a big name with a huge heart and is a fan favorite kind of a guy. That’s the kind of match that makes a legendary kind of a fight and that’s what Anderson wants.”

White said he met with Silva and Soares last week and expressed his concerns about Silva’s performance in the last two outings. Silva defended his performance, noting that Cote did not attack and that Leites fought exceptionally cautiously.

White called Silva out at the post fight news conference at UFC 97 for backing off as he was pounding Leites on the ground, but Soares said he didn’t back off for no reason.

“There was a moment when he was in the half-guard and pounding [Leites] out when it looked from outside the octagon like he stood up and walked away,” Soares said.

“Unfortunately, people outside the octagon don’t see the fight the same way as those who are in it. Anderson said that what happened was that Thales was covering up well and that in one of those situations, he hit his hand very hard on Thales’ elbow.

“He thought, ‘Oh man, I could break my hand,’ so instead of risking a broken hand that would keep him out for six months if the guy was going to keep covering up like that, he’d stand up and fight him on the feet. But people outside the octagon probably didn’t notice that.”

Silva made his reputation in the UFC by roaring through competition, knocking out most of his foes violently. He destroyed Rich Franklin twice and also knocked out Nate Marquardt and submitted Dan Henderson.

White was his biggest advocate, insisting there is no fighter in the world close to Silva. And though he was disappointed by his performance in the last two fights, White said he still feels strongly that Silva is the best.

He said Silva will remain middleweight champion and said he thinks there will be viable opponents soon. One would be ex-light heavyweight Michael Bisping, who fights Henderson at UFC 100 in July. If Bisping wins, a Silva-Bisping fight for the title would be a major event.

And White said he is working on signing another middleweight that he would not name who he said “would blow your mind.”

“I’m a fight fan like anyone else and I want to see the best fights, too,” White said. “Other than the Bisping-(Matt) Hamill fight, where I literally got death threats and people said they were going to kill me if they ever saw me, I got more nasty email about the last [Silva-Leites] fight than any one I’ve had in nine years of doing this. I got four of them [Monday], personally, to me. I can only imagine what it’s like to the UFC.com address.”

White said that Silva also expressed an interest in fighting heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, who is under contract with Affliction. White has made several attempts to sign Emelianenko, none successful.

Soares confirmed that Silva would like a fight with Emelianenko and said that size wouldn’t be an issue. Silva walks around between fights at 215 and Emelianenko fights around 230.

“We’d come in at about 220 if we ever got that fight,” Soares said. “Anderson thinks that would be a great fight for him. He didn’t say he expected to blow him out, but he thinks he can give him a very good fight.”

But long before he considers fighting Emelianenko, he has to worry about a match with Griffin.

“I talked to [a reporter] the day after [UFC 97] and that’s when I started working on this,” White said. “At the end of the day, it’s my job to put on the kinds of fights that you in the media will like and that the fans will want to see. Silva and Griffin is the kind of fight that even other fighters are going to go crazy for. That’s what I do for a living.

“I as a fan didn’t like what I saw [at UFC 97] and I wasn’t kidding when I said I wanted to walk out of the building because of how embarrassed I am. But I can tell you this: I’m going to be counting the days until this fight.”

The guy who runs this site knows all about UFC. I hope he is here for the Machida fight.

I want to see Machida destroy Evans. I love his style. I think he can do it.

Hughes vs Serra will probably be a wrestling match, but I'll go with Hughes.

I despise Evans, but will admit he has improved quite a bit since his pathetic display as the winner of The Ultimate Fighter. He has developed an unorthodox style via good head movement and footwork. With that said I still think he is one of the luckiest fighters in MMA. Like any given Sunday in football, the best mma fighters can be defeated with one shot. Rashod proved that when he closed his eyes, swung for the fences and knocked the F##K out of Chuck Liddel. I honestly believe his win streak will come to an end when he faces one of the most intelligent, technically proficient fighters in the world. Machida has an arsenal of techniques and superior stamina that rivals a Greek God. He disected a undefeated monster from Brazil, Thiago Silva like a science class frog. Machida's critics claim he sometimes runs or avoids his opponents attacks and refuses to engage. And the problem is??? If you can win on points and not receive a concussion like the majority of the meatheads permiating the mma scene then kudo's to you. Machida's has some impressive victories over the likes of Rich Franklin, Stephon Bonner and Tito Ortiz. I am really looking forward to this fight and predict victory for the Japanese/Brazilian.

UFC 100 Saturday July 11th.

Mir vs Lesner (again)

St Pierre vs Thiago Alves

Dan Henderson vs Mike Bisping

Not giving Mir much of a chance in this one, unless he finds the sweet spot on Brock's chin. Brock will lean on him all night, wear him down, then find a sloppy way to finish.

I'm taking Alves...I should say, I WANT Alves to win.

I haven't seen enough of Henderson or Bisping. But if I'm not busy Saturday, I hope to see Bisping get a win over Henderson. That's one fight I do want to watch.

Brock absolutely hammered Frank Mir. Will somebody PLEASE get him in the octogon with Fedor?

Then Brock Lesner went off during the after fight interview, saying he was going home to drink a Coors Light....not a Bud Lite, because Budweiser won't pay him shit, and that he was going to get on top of his wife tonight. Is he bringing a wrestling schtick to the MMA or what?!?!? I don't like it, and I thought it was bush league of him to dis Mir like he did before the opening bell.

St. Pierre is one elusive dude..at least he was last night, dodging damn near everything Thiago Alves threw at him. He took control of that fight with authority. More so than with Penn.

I DON'T like that he thinks because he's champion, he shouldn't have to move up to fight Anderson Silva. GSP doesn't mind fighting guys who move up in weight to fight him, and I think he's dodging Silva. If he walks around at 185, but won't walk in to fight Silva at that weight, then he's afraid of Silva-period. That's one fight I'd love to see.

Of course the one fight I was looking forward to seeing the most was Bisping-Henderson, and of course, I missed it. I know Henderson won, but I didn't see it at all. I would ask my brother how it went, but that fucker exaggerates, and I won't get a truthful answer.

Man, was I wrong about that one!

UFC 107 tonite!!

B.J Penn vs Diego Sanchez. I think BJ should win this one. He is fighting at his proper weight, unlike the match between him and GSP.

Ken Florian vs Clay Guida looks like a good one.

Jon Fitch vs Mike Pierce. 2 wrestlers. You wolud expect it to go to the ground immediately, but I'm going to go out on a crazy limb and predict a KO.

Frank Mir vs Cheick Kongo. A submissions specialist vs a heavy hitter. It's been said that Mir has put on some extra muscle to compete with the bigger guys in the division, we'll see if he can put Kongo down with strikes or a submission, since Kongo apparrently has no ground game. I'm picking Mir to win this one. I haven't seen Kongo fight...yet.

Paul Buentello vs. Stefan Struve. I don't know either of these guys, to be honest, but I do want to watch what a 7' heavyweight does in the octagon.

It's too bad the Rampage-Evans match-up isn't taking place tonight, but all in all, looks like some pretty good match-ups.

Rd 1-Fitch got on Pierce's back and couldn't get him down even with all those noogies to the face, then they stand back up and dont do much, but Fitch wins the round IMO.

Rd 2-Fitch gets a kick caught and Pierce takes him down with it, but Fitch takes his back again. Advantage Fitch.

Rd 3-Pierce knew he lost the first 2. He kept it standing and finished strong, but couldn't pull it off.

Fitch got the decision, but man, his face is hamburger! I doubt he could have made it another round.

Rd. 2-Man, Penn's defense is outstanding. Sanchez is the #1 contender? No wonder they asked BJ to fight outside of his weight class!

Rd 3-BJ continues to frustrate Nightmare. He just does what he wants-or what he doesn't want to do. Taking Sanchez into rd 4..

Rd 4-BJ continues to play defense, scoring a few punches, and turning it up a little late in the round.

Rd 5-OUCH! Penn performed a lobotomy on Sanchez! His forehead is wide open! Penn gets the TKO.

BJ's trunks used to be white!

Still don't know what happened with Mir-Kongo.

UFC boss says doctors will have clearer prognosis on Brock Lesnar's health this week
By Neil Davidson (CP) – 13 hours ago

LAS VEGAS — UFC president Dana White says he expects to hear a definitive prognosis on Brock Lesnar this week, which should determine the ailing heavyweight champion's future.

"This is the week. This is the week Brock Lesnar is going back to the doctor, getting fully checked out by one of the best doctors and hospitals in the world," White told the UFC 108 post-fight news conference Saturday night.

"If the doctors say things are going well and things are going in the right direction, then maybe we're a few months away from him coming back," he added. "If it's not, and not going in the right direction, he'll either be done and have to retire or he'll be out for a couple of years.

"So hopefully we get good news. And then after we get that announcement, then we'll be able to plan what we're going to do with the heavyweight division."

The six-foot-three 265-pound Lesnar had been diagnosed with diverticulitis, a digestive disease found in the large intestine.

Lesnar, 32, last fought at UFC 100 in July when he stopped Frank Mir.

The UFC has already announced a heavyweight fight between Mir and Shane Carwin for UFC 111 in March. The unbeaten Carwin had been slated to fight Lesnar until the champion got sick.

Should Lesnar be sidelined for the long run, the UFC would probably set up a bout for an interim title.

Lesnar's absence also hurts the bottom line. The big man is one of the organization's hottest draws, pulling in fans from all ends of the sports spectrum. But White dismissed that as inconsequential compared to the bigger picture.

"I'm not looking at Brock Lesnar and saying 'Oh Brock,' now he's gone we're going to lose all these pay-per-views buys. What I'm thinking about is I hope Brock's going to be OK. If he has to have this major surgery, you're talking about changing the quality of this guy's life for ever. I like him, I respect him and I hope that doesn't happen for him and his family's sake."

White said Lesnar, an avid outdoorsman who lives in rural Minnesota, had called him to complain that the UFC president kept on sending him electronic gadgets, gifts that were useless since he doesn't own a computer.

So White sent him a package of ice fishing rods.

Evans vs Silva:

Rashad fought like a man afraid to be knocked out. I think the Machida loss got into his head a little bit. He pulled out a victory, using takedowns and wearing out Thiago Silva to the point that when Silva rocked him in the 3rd round, he didin't have the gas to finish Evans.

Silva was hit by Evans earlier in the 3rd, but it seemed to give Silva the confidence to drop his hands and showboat, rather than avoid being hit again. Neither fighter was impressive in that match.

Rashad Evans was questioning the fans' response to the decision in conversation with Dana White afterwards, thinking there may be some controversy over the decision, more than likely because Evans himself knows that was a lackluster performance. It was the first fight in a while where Evans relied heavily on his wrestling skills instead of his punches, the same punches he has had success with against his more recent opponents... before Machida.

With Rampage coming after him sometime this year, he'd better get back into the gym. But in a strange way, I'm glad he got the win....it will be that much sweeter to see Jackson stomp a mudhole in his ass.

James McSweeney from TUF 10 Team Rashad is now escorting Evans into the octagon. Did Rashad and Jardine break up?

James "lights out" Toney is stalking Dana White for a crack at a UFC match. I don't want to see what's already been done, and this would not help the credibility of the sport. Watching Toney get choked out or submitted in 20 seconds is not my idea of a good fight. It's not fair to the fighters, and it's not fair to the fans to have to pay for some sideshow shit like that.

He's past his prime, and I highly doubt he was ever training for anything besides a stand-up fight that does not include the use of kicks for his entire career.
There's no way he could train up to that level in a short period of time.

After football, track, bobsledding and ballet, Herschel Walker tackles MMA
By KERITH GABRIEL
Philadelphia Daily News

gabrielk@phillynews.com

NEW YORK - Since his retirement from football in 1997, Herschel Walker's athletic endeavors have included Olympic bobsledding, track and field and even ballet.
However, his latest decision - to enter the world of mixed martial arts - might just be his wildest yet.

Walker, after all, is 47 years old.

"People have been saying my decision is a publicity stunt and a farce and I just laugh because it's the farthest thing from the truth," said Walker, who played for the Eagles from 1992 to '94, as part of a 13-year NFL career. "For those that think this is a circus, get up off the couch and train with me. I guarantee you'll see how serious I am."

Yesterday, Walker spoke at a news conference to promote his Strikeforce: Miami undercard bout on Jan. 30 in Sunrise, Fla. Interestingly, Walker's MMA debut comes the day before the NFL's Pro Bowl will be played in Miami. Walker was a two-time Pro Bowler.

Walker will fight Greg Nagy, 26, a 6-5, 215-pounder from Arizona with a 1-1 record. Walker, 6-1, 217 pounds, signed a multifight contract in September. He has been training with "Crazy" Bob Cook and Javier Mendez, owner/operators of American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif.

Walker said he will donate his purse to Project Turnaround, the same Texas-based community development charity to which he donated the proceeds from his appearance on NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice." Strikeforce was waiting approval from the Florida Athletic Commission to release what Walker will be paid for his debut, but a source said it will be a five-figure payout.

One person who vouched for Walker's validity was Mendez. Mendez has been a fight trainer in both boxing and MMA since 1985 and claims that in the 7 weeks he has had to get Walker prepared to become a professional fighter, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner's ever-increasing level of improvement is nothing short of remarkable.

Walker holds a fifth-degree black belt in tae kwon do and has other martial arts experience.

"This sport is no joke. You can't come in here and think you're going to take it by storm," Mendez said. "I knew of Herschel's martial arts background, but when he came to me he was still very green. I mean, we had to teach him how to punch, how to throw kicks, everything. In all my years of training fighters, I have never seen one with the work ethic and intensity. The man is a freak of nature."

That has been the sentiment since Walker exploded onto the football world at the University of Georgia in 1980. The man who was known to subsist on just one meal a day and 4 to 5 hours of sleep per night still does. The man who relied solely on body-weight exercises and calisthenics to build his freakish physique still sees that as the only way.

"I have never picked up a weight to build my body; I don't even think I would know how," Walker said. "I am still an advocate that young athletes shouldn't lift weights without proper training because that is just asking for a reason to ruin your body."

Walker decimated a recent physical fitness stress test conducted by Florida Boxing Commission chief physician Allan Fields, who called the exam "the most strenuous test that you possibly can impose on an athlete." Fields noted that Walker produced the highest heart evaluation score of anyone ever tested at the facility, including Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali.

"He's in as fine a shape as anyone we've had the care of," Fields said at a news conference Tuesday in Miami Lakes. "This guy is 47 going on 22 as far as his physical fitness goes."

And yesterday, Walker vowed that his mental health is equally strong. There was a time when that was not the case as Walker conveyed in his 2008 autobiography "Breaking Free," where he revealed his battle with multiple personality disorder.

"My mind is good, I feel good," said Walker, who said he is still being treated for the disorder. "You know, I was going through a rough time in my life, as we all do, and it took the help of some true friends along with the grace of God to get through. Right now my mind is clear and all I am focused on is getting in the ring on Jan. 30."

While Walker doesn't want to look too far ahead in his MMA career, Mendez said the former running back, with his work ethic, could easily become a top contender in 3 years.

For Walker, fighting isn't about accolades as much as it is about trying something completely out of the ordinary, and excelling at it, like he has done so many times before.

"I don't know where I will be in this sport in 3 years, but where I am today . . . is what I am looking forward to," Walker said. "You know at lot of guys like Jose Canseco [who was knocked out in 77 seconds in his MMA debut last May] who tried to do this sport and embarrassed it. You guys will see that when I get in there I am doing this for real and maybe that'll shut up some of the couch potatoes. I do that, and that'll be good enough for me."

I hope the hell Jackson brings it. There's certainly no love lost between these two.

Brock Lesner may fight at UFC 114, but I think Carwin and Mir are scheduled to fight before that, so for all you "Big Country" fans, this might be it...

Or could it be Kimbo vs Lesner? Kimbo hasn't fought since Houston Alexander back in December. One never knows with Dana White.

Jackson was a really shitty coach on the last season. As much as I hated Rashad in the past, he definitely came off a helluva lot more classy. That said, he's gonna fuckin' lose.

Only on a relative scale. He's still a douche. But he definitely had more faith in his guys and actually worked with them. Jackson started losing and then started claiming that he wasn't a coach anyway.

Man...when I was posting here regularly a few years back, nobody wanted to talk UFC. This is great! :)

Evans seemed to know who he was choosing for his team before it was time to choose...I think he had more of a knowledge about the cast than Rampage.

Marcus Jones was a huge disappointment...I thought he would run the table, until he got punched in the face....no chin at all...

If Justin Wren got another round with Roy Nelson, I think the entire season's outcome would have been different.

Did you happen to see the Machida-Shogun fight?

And here we go..

Jackson: “I really want to knock this guy out,” Jackson (30-7) said in a statement Thursday. “I've never, ever wanted to knock someone as cold as I want to knock Rashad Evans out. He's disrespected me so much, for so long. . . . I saw him in Sydney (at UFC 110) a few weeks back and we picked up right where we left off. I can't stand him.”

Evans: “I don't like all the pre-fight talking, so I can't wait until I finally get my chance to shut him up,” Evans responded. “There were a lot of times on the show when I wanted to hit him right there. . . . Plus, he's gotten fat. He needs to get in shape just to get in shape.”

UFC 111-

Shane Carwin destroyed Frank Mir! All the talk about how Mir worked his ass off to prepare and he gets absolutely smoked! Wow!

Watch out, Brock.

GSP vs. Dan Hardy-

Hardy managed to go the distance with GSP, but lost by unanimous decision. St.Pierre was able to keep him on the ground throughout the fight, but it wasn't easy for him. If Hardy gets better on the ground, he could be dangerous.

"Rush" pretty much dominated that fight, but Hardy is one tough SOB. Dan Hardy earned my respect Saturday night when he refused to tap. GSP had his arm locked up and damn near ripped it off-twice!! That was a good fight.

Afterwards, GSP was even shaking his head over not getting Hardy to tap out, saying in the post-fight interview that he'll have to talk to his trainers about what he did wrong.

Oh, did I mention GSP spit water all over his corner before the fight, then poked Hardy in the eye?

First the grease and now this...I'm not too big on St.Pierre...arrogant fuck. Cheater.

UFC 113 MAY 8, 2010

Main Card
Light Heavyweight Championship bout: Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio Rua
Welterweight bout: Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley
Lightweight bout: Sam Stout vs. Jeremy Stephens
Heavyweight bout: Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione
Middleweight bout: Patrick Côté vs. Alan Belcher

Outstanding! The rematch!!

UFC 115 might be in Cincinnati, or it might not. If it is, I may try and attend, even though Liddell vs Ortiz doesn't really appeal to me.

I heard Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson have moved on to Strikeforce...

UFC 114 with Jackson-Evans co-headlines Griffin vs Noguera...Last I saw, Forrest was totally out of shape, walking around at 240..

Great match-ups the next few months! :)

hideyoursheep
05-10-2010, 07:17 AM
UFC 113 was full of surprises-sort of.

In the light-heavyweight title rematch between Mauricio Rua and Lyoto Machida, Rua elected NOT to leave it in the hands of the judges this time, and crushed Machida in 3 minutes of the first round with authority. Machida threw what I thought was a punch that was out of character for his discipline when he went on the offensive against Shogun, and Rua countered beautifully, knocked him down and finished the fight. Machida was out fucking cold! Undefeated no more.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.. the new Light-Heavyweight champ! I knew it could have gone that way, but I didn't expect Machida to get smoked so early in the fight. The frog on his eye was the size of a golf ball! Good for Shogun! Definitely the KO of the night.

Josh Koscheck raped the cocky, heavy-handed Paul Daley on the ground for 3 rounds and got the decision, then Daley decides since he didn't get a chance to get his punches off during the fight, to sucker-punch Koscheck in the face AFTER the last round. That was bullshit, Tyson-like behavior.

Jeremy Stevens vs Sam Stout gets my vote for Fight Of The Night. Stevens won by split decision, but it was a great contest by both fighters.

Kimbo Slice vs Matt Mitrione....Kimbo is finished in the UFC IMO. Slice showcased his new arsenal of slams, but ran out of gas by the end of round 1, that's when Mitrione went to work on Kimbo's bad knee, forcing Kimbo to practically quit in the middle of round 2 when he had nothing left and couldn't defend himself once Mitrione began pounding him from the top position, forcing the ref to stop it in the 2nd round. Mitrione gets the TKO and remains undefeated at 2-0 so far.

It was a good card overall, and the best this year. Can't wait for the Rampage vs Evans grudge match May 29th.

I'm kinda exited about the Jake Shields vs GSP matchup. Couture vs Machida? I'm not giving Couture much of a chance in this. Machida is too much for him. Randy is tough, but.....he's gonna get dominated in this one. But the old dog deserves a chance to get after one of the best.

UFC 130 Main Card results:

Middleweight bout: Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago
Stann defeated Santiago via KO (punches) at 4:29 of round 2.

Welterweight bout: Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story
Story defeated Alves via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Heavyweight bout: Stefan Struve vs. Travis Browne
Browne defeated Struve via KO (superman punch) at 4:11 of round 1.

Heavyweight bout: Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson
Mir defeated Nelson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).

Light Heavyweight bout: Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill
Jackson defeated Hamill via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

I missed the fights..didn't get to watch them yet, but I'll say this; It's been a year since he lost that decision to Evans.
If Rampage can't finish a guy like Hamill quickly, He won't be able to handle Rashad Evans. Rashad wouldn't take the fight in place of Thiago Silva, who was originally slated to fight Rampage, but Silva failed a drug test, and Evans said no, so Hamill stepped up, and I give him props.

Jackson didn't really "win" that fight with Machida IMO. He needs to train harder. I don't think he's disciplined at all..

I have to see the Mir-Nelson fight...I'm interested to see how that went down...If Nelson can't get into that top tier of heavyweights, he may as well leave. He just lost in the first round of the losers bracket IMO.

Rampage Jackson and Jon Jones in talks for title fight in September

Quinton Jackson will get the chance to do something he hasn’t been able to do in almost three years, fight for the title. Verbal agreements are in place for a Jon Jones vs. Rampage Jackson UFC championship fight targeted for September at UFC 135.

The news comes just days after Rampage dominated Matt Hamill at UFC 130, winning a unanimous decision in three rounds. UFC president Dana White indicated prior to the fight that Jackson and Lyoto Machida were in line for the next opportunity to fight Bones Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title. Jackson’s win over Hamill and previous victory over Machida put the wheels in fast motion to make this fight a reality.

Most would assume that the Jones vs. Rampage championship fight would go down at UFC 135 on September 24. The event is tentatively scheduled to take place in Denver, CO. However, UFC commentator Joe Rogan said on a recent podcast that Rampage vs. Jones would actually take place on September 17.

Rampage is tough. He can take a lot of punishment and still finish you. Jones looks unstoppable right now. Both of them beat Hamill, although Jones got DQ'd for 12 to 6 elbows..he was beating him so bad, the ref wouldn't stop it, and he wasn't sure what to do next!

Too close to call really...depends on how motivated Rampage is to train properly. Jackson hasn't went 5 rounds since he lost to Forrest Griffin, and Jones never has. It could be a great fight!

...and just WTF is wrong with Rashad Evans?! He was supposed to fight Shogun, backed out, Jones stepped in, and won the title!

Was reportedly supposed to fight Rampage again, backed out, Hamill stepped in, and Hamill lost.

He was next in line to get a shot at Bones, but I guess he doesn't want it.:umm:..so we have Jones vs Jackson.

If this was planned out to keep Rashad from fighting his friend and training partner, that would be ghey.

One thing's for sure...Rampage is going to have to bring his A-game, the A-Team, and every other fucking A-thing he can muster if he wants to get that belt from Jon Jones! Bones' reach is un-fucking real. Rampage is definitely going to get punched in every position.

Once Evans got him on the ground he wasn't able to do anything....which brings me to the Rampage-Machida bout...

I'd score it round 1-Rampage, and rounds 2 and 3 a draw. Round 3 it appeared as if Machida had the upper hand, but once he tried to apply that armbar from his guard,Machida, and the entire building knew what was coming......and he let go, giving Rampage a chance to close any gap in that round IMO....Not many fighters can pull off that powerslam!

Jones was so fucking dominant. That kid is flat out good. I don't see anybody beating him for awhile, unless he gets careless. He may have to move up in weight, just to make it more interesting. The thing that impressed me the most about Jones last night, for every offensive move he had, he followed it up with a defensive move. Even when he missed a move, he was immediately ready with a defensive move. I think he will kick Rashad Evans ass.

Jon Jones retained his UFC light-heavyweight title Saturday night with a first-round TKO of Chael Sonnen at Prudential Center.

The end came at 4:33 of the first round.

Jones (18-1) dominated by taking Sonnen to the ground and unloading. Sonnen repeatedly did his best to scramble to his feet. But after what likely was the fourth takedown of the round for Jones, he didn't allow Sonnen to escape.

Jones began delivering his patented elbows, each one connecting on Sonnen's face with more force. The repeated blows forced referee Keith Peterson to end the assault.

After the result was made official, Jones discovered he had suffered a broken left toe during the fight. He was unaware of the injury during the action.

The win was extra sweet for Jones, who often found himself the target of harsh comments from Sonnen.

"I wasn't planning on breaking my big toe," said Jones, who successfully defended his title for the fifth consecutive time, equalling the UFC light-heavyweight record of Tito Ortiz. "I was just trying to get back at Chael Sonnen. I really wanted to silence Chael Sonnen and I think I did the job.

"I wanted to outwrestle Chael Sonnen."

Though Sonnen failed to make it out of the first round, he has no reason to hang his head. During his brief stint in the cage against Jones, Sonnen fought hard.

"He's an excellent fighter," said Sonnen, who fell to 27-13-1. "I have no issue with the stoppage."

Sonnen hit Jones to the body and head a few times with hard punches, but he simply was overmatched. Jones was too big and too strong for Sonnen, who hinted at possible retirement.

"I have to look at things," Sonnen said. "If I'm not in position to fight for a title, then this sport might no longer be for me."

The prefight dislike middleweights Michael Bisping and Alan Belcher exhibited toward each other was not intended to boost interest in their bout. It was real.

They weren't looking to play nice inside the cage, and they didn't. There were no smiles, no gestures of respect. The plan was to beat the other guy up.

And that's what Bisping did, putting on a boxing clinic in the final two rounds of the three-round contest. Bisping was hitting and not being hit. He was in charge throughout the fight and would walk away with a unanimous decision.

The fight was scored 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28. ESPN.com also scored the fight in Bisping's favor, 29-28. It was a solid performance from Bisping, but the bout didn't quite put a smile on his face.

Near the end of the final round, Bisping threw a left hand but his thumb scraped Belcher's right eye. Belcher fell to the canvas and rolled around while covering his face. Shortly thereafter, blood began flowing from the area around his eye.

Referee Herb Dean jumped in and stopped the action as a result of the accidental foul. Afterward, Bisping buried the hatchet with Belcher.

"First off I want to apologize to Alan," Bisping said. "It was an accident. These things happen sometime in this sport. Before the fight Alan and I said a lot of things to each other, but he is a good guy."

"Without sounding arrogant, that was exactly what I was planning to do tonight. He's a big middleweight but I knew I had the speed on him going into the fight."

Bisping improved to 25-5. Belcher suffered his second loss in a row and slipped to 17-7.

Roy Nelson stated his case for a title shot, knocking out Cheick Kongo in the first round of their heavyweight fight.

It was an overhand right to the jaw that did the damage. As soon as the punch landed, Kongo slumped to the canvas. His body immediately went limp. There was no way he was going to recover from that shot.

Nelson would land one more right hand while Kongo was on the ground, but he didn't deliver it with full force. Before he could throw another punch, referee Kevin Mulhall jumped in and waved the fight over at the 2:03 mark.

"I did this for the fans," Nelson said. "All they do is set them up and I knock them down. I want that gold."

"I'm ready for the title if that's what's next for me. I know I can give Cain [Velasquez] fits and if it's Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, then I'm ready for that too."

Nelson also tried to explain why he threw the punch that appeared to land after Kongo was already out.

"I knew when I hit him [the first time] that he was out, but he also recovers very fast as we saw in the Pat Barry fight. I went in and hit him again then looked to the ref to let him know I was prepared to keep going if necessary.

If he continues to level the opposition, UFC officials will find it difficult not to offer Nelson (20-7) a title shot. Nelson, who trains boxing under Jeff Mayweather, has won three fights in a row -- all by knockout.

Kongo fell to 28-8-2.

The expectations are very high for rising women's bantamweight Sara McMann and she offered a glimpse as to why -- registering a first-round TKO in her UFC debut.

McGann showed off her advanced wrestling skills by taking Sheila Gaff to the ground seconds after the horn sounded to start the bout. But Graf displayed solid defense and McMann was unable to land any strikes.

But the action quickly picked up after referee Gasper Oliver had the fighters return to their feet.

Both fighters started throwing punches and kicks. They eventually entered into a clinch against the cage and that's when McMann took over.

She took Gaff to the ground, got side control and began landing hard right hands repeatedly to Gaff's face. Gaff was unable to defend herself and Oliver stopped the assault at the 4:06 mark.

"I kept telling myself this was going to be like my world championships," said McMann, who improved to 7-0. "I competed in seven world championships. I was trying to get elbows but I couldn't find the range."

McMann explained her game plan -- "to get matters to the ground."

"Her strongest threat was on the feet so I took her down," McMann said. "I'm a wrestler. I can take people down whenever I want to. I put myself in the captain's seat where I could do the most damage and I plan to keep doing that."

Gaff falls to 10-5-1. McMann becomes just the third woman to earn a victory inside the Octagon.

I know this is old news, but when the fuck did Jones break his big toe? I replayed the final seconds of the bout a few times and couldn't determine exactly when it happened.

I doubt it was while he was showboating after the fight, because he should have been on the ball of his foot while spinning, but maybe.

He was using his big toes as leverage on Sonnen. I thought that was where it happened.

I thought Rogan was going to puke!! LMAO!

On those horrible pay-per-view Saturday nights we have here, the dregs of humanity and the salient examples of everything that is wrong in this dumbed down America come out of their locker rooms to take time out from rat-tailing their buddies' asses to watch the fights and drool on themselves crowd up the bar for actual paying customers...

I'm sorry, but UFC is creepy and gay and stocked with lowlifes..

That's okay...I have the same opinion about NASCAR, WWE, World Cup Soccer.....and golf.

I've tried to watch UFC... and yet every time I do it turns into two dudes dry-humping. Not my thing. YMMV.

LOL @ "dry humping"...

Maybe you watch too much porn, J...

Did anybody else watch the Brown vs Silva fight on Fox last Saturday night? If not, find it and watch it. Fight of the year.

LOL I heard sports' radio factoid that most of the top fighters make like $30K a year or something. They must really like brain damage and grappling with other men a lot...
