He was an average bass player who discovered bass effects and used them better than most. If you're a bass player primarily picking, your not playing the bass. He was however, an above average 1st tenor in 4 part harmonies. Wolfie can't replace that.

Don't get me wrong: unlike most music critics, I've got nothing against Sammy Hagar. He used to seriously rock my teenaged world with Montrose in the '70s, then I thoroughly enjoyed his early solo albums (before he decided he couldn't drive 55), and I even liked a couple of tracks from his mid-'80s stint with Van Halen ("Finish What Ya Started", "Dreams".). I always thought he had a great rock 'n' roll voice.
But enough is enough. Judging by last night's concert at the Commodore with his new "supergroup", Chickenfoot, it's definitely time for Hagar to grab himself a bottle of that premium tequila he so proudly promotes and head off into the Cabo sunset.
The quartet--which includes guitar hero Joe Satriani, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith--showcased all the songs from its upcoming self-titled CD, and there didn't seem to be a strong one in the bunch. They sounded forced, formulaic, and extremely safe; most of them came off as substandard rejects from Van Halen's OU812 sessions. Hagar tried hard to make it seem like he was having the time of his life trotting out these tedious odes to the endless party, but come on, pal. you're 61. Isn't it time you branched out from songs about your "Sexy Little Thing"? Your new tunes make Nickelback seem edgy.
And Satriani is just wasted in this group. The guy's a real artist on guitar, as he's proven via a dozen instrumental albums, so to see him up there grinding through vapid, contrived arrangements is just sad. I predict he's going to get fed up with this misstep of a "supergroup" very soon and go back to being an adventurous axeman of the highest order, the type who'd much rather trade licks with a virtuosic bassist like Stu Hamm than the lowly Michael Anthony.
I got much more of a buzz from the night's opening act, Vancouver's Rich Hope and His Evil Doers. Hope only has one evil doer, actually, ace drummer Adrian "Mad" Mack, but between the two of them they churn out the type of raw, honest, gutbucket rock 'n' roll that Sammy Hagar now seems truly incapable of.

I like how he called it a "stint." For years, I remember people saying "Sammy was in the band for 10 years, and Roth was there for 6." Regardless, the music just doesn't do anything for me. In truth, Satriani's last few albums haven't been memorable to me.... Vai's either for that matter. I'd rather listen to John Petrucci, or Marty Friedman's solo album(s) for my instrumental music.

Seriously, let's take a look at this:
Sambo -- clearly this fat fuck is riding on the coattails of his success with Eddie, which he thinks makes him super. Other than that, being a B-grade level singer, songwriter and performer doesn't make you super.
Mike A - great harmonies aside, no one would even think of putting him on bass to actually form a 'supergroup'. Not knocking his bass playing but come on, super?? No.
Joe Satriani - okay, I think we can say he is in that realm of 'super' judging from his track record of guitar playing. However, if you ask me this cat hasn't done anything remotely explosive since, well, 'Flying in a Blue Dream' (1989).
Chad Smith - who??? Yeah, some fuck from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I say that again -- Chad Smith -- drummer for a supergroup he is not.
In comparison, Dave's EEAS band in 1986 was a supergroup because he got together the best players in the biz at the time.

Supergroup Chickenfoot an uninspiring cocktail

We expect pomp and grandiosity from our supergroups. But when erstwhile Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and stunt guitarist Joe Satriani joined forces, they settled on a less than inspiring moniker: Chickenfoot. Yes, Chickenfoot. For all the name conveys, the group might as well have called itself Gone Fishin'.
Indeed, there's a certain busman's holiday quality to Chickenfoot, as if its principals came together not in service of any great musical vision but because they seemed to have had nothing better to do with their time between albums. At a sold out Park West on Friday night, the quartet did its best to rise to the occasion, even if the bar was set pretty low, and for about 90 minutes the guys played their hearts out and had a blast doing it, boldly sticking almost entirely to songs from its coming album (due June 9).
Yet as nothing more or less than the exact sum of its parts, Chickenfoot was a little like mixing all the soft drinks together at a local fast-food stop into a dubious cocktail: It didn't taste terrible, but it didn't taste particularly good either. Songs such as "Soap on a Rope," "Sexy Little Thing," "Oh Yeah" and "Get It Up" mostly featured sub-Zeppelin riffs several years past their expiration date, Hagar's and Anthony's hammy vocals and blistering, yet out of place, sci-fi solos from Satriani, all in service of tunes too silly, turgid or stupid to take seriously.
There's a place for stupidity in rock, of course. But stupidity plus banality is a deadly combination. The already famous and successful members of Chickenfoot may hope history repeats itself, but if the pointless band skirts tragedy, it instead heads straight to farce.
