I'm thinking about building one of those... what did they use for setting the neck and bracing back to the bridge?

How much of it is hollow?

I can with mine...

It has hinges and a clasp, but it was glued shut...

I fixed that within three days of owning mine...

It's cool too, because it has the same logo glued inside...

It's neck through!

That's why I unglued and opened mine. I wanted to see what it was and how it was made...

The actual cigar box is totally hollow with a bit of corner bracing...

Ok, heres an idea for ya E, how about just a neck ??
Obviously you would need some kind of framing
around the saddle end of things, but if you can do this
with a cigar box, then why not just the neck...?

Neck thru eh? To me that would limit the actual tone/acoustics of the box to a degree.

I looked at some instructions on the net but those were 3 string primitives.

I like the one in the video Cigar Box Guitar Blues with the Squier Tele neck a few posts up...

Was thinking of picking up some cheap used Squier strat with a decent neck. Then do some "Hillbilly engineering" with a power saw and router to hack up the body leaving the bridge mounting area, neck pocket and then cut the sides to the cigar box width, then remove the center portion where the pickup routings were. Then mount the box onto that with the pickup mounted to the front of the box. Use a tune-o-matic bridge with the posts drilled out thru the box and mounted in the old body.

I don't know... maybe I need some more time on the drawing board...

That's what I figure... been doing some shopping around for boxes and trying to determine what types of woods are used and what works best.

I've seen the 3 string primative things and some using premade 4 string necks. I was thinking 6 string, but trying to figure out how to set a neck and bridge in such light, thin wood...

I can't quite puzzle that out either. I suppose you could use a lightweight neck, then somehow affix an extension on it about 5-6 inches long in order to anchor the bridge. I just can't see how it would resonate worth a damn, given the small dimensions of the box and what can only be a dampening effect taking place by the wood extension. And remember, you are supposed to add some triangular pieces of wood in the corners to give the thing some overall support, thus dampening the space even further.

So if you planted a pick-up on the extension piece I alluded to, how much sound would it actually capture?
