WASHINGTON - The Senate has unanimously passed a resolution apologizing for slavery and racial segregation in the U.S. and sent the measure to the House.

Democrat Tom Harkin first introduced the measure years ago but wanted it passed Thursday on the eve of Juneteenth, June 19, a day of celebration commemorating the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the release of African Americans from slavery. He said the House is to take it up soon and that a formal celebration will be held next month.

Juneteenth Day events are held in communities around the U.S. to commemorate the day in 1865 when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, to announce the Civil War was over and that slaves were free.

It's ok lounge you can start another thread and close mine.

The municipality of Washington, D.C., celebrates April 16 as Emancipation Day. On that day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia. The Act freed about 3,100 enslaved persons in the District of Columbia nine months before President Lincoln issued his famous Emancipation Proclamation. The District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act represents the only example of compensation by the federal government to former owners of emancipated slaves.[3]

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. State of Texas in 1865. Celebrated on June 19, the term is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, and is recognized as a state holiday in 31 of the United States.[1][2]

The Emancipation Proclamation consists of two executive orders issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. The first one, issued September 22, 1862, declared the freedom of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America that did not return to Union control by January 1, 1863. The second order, issued January 1, 1863, named ten specific states where it would apply. Lincoln issued the Executive Order by his authority as "Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy" under Article II, section 2 of the United States Constitution.....

I really do not know how so many government, officially voted into a position of leadership, legislators and such.. segregated the south and other areas after the Emancipation Proclamation was created and passed, and how they "Didn't Recognize" it..?

I would say we should apologize for that .

But wasn't the civil war the 620,000 dead americans apology enough for the idea that, all men are created equal, and that means everyone..?

Do you know the interst acrued on a Mule and 40 acres over 150 some odd years.

Is that why we have to apologize...? and why others oppose the legal apology..?

I truly do not know what it's all about.

I guess we better let the auto industry die and get those checkbooks out.

FORD is in the position to save us, at least something...

And if Chrysler can regroup and come home in a couple years that would be good, but GM was already a worldwide company. They are gone. Maybe Cadillac and Corvette may become their own independant companies here, but who knows...

I guess not...

But really, I think this is a diversionary tactic while the goverment continues to sell us down the river...

I have been overseas a couple times and what amazed me was every single city town country has 8-10 American TV station at thier disposal that is when I had -MY- apiffany(sp) that the -WHOLE WORLD- is truly watching us, and looks to us for............... what I do not know.

We have no view of the rest of the world "I mean access to that -TV- station broadcast from there that town... we only get our idea of what is going on from -OUR- news.

If we can humble ourselves in the eyes of WHAT I do not know people love us for the most part and find us interesting and fresh..

I escorted some Germans here for awhile, and they were amazed at the drive time between cities, that would be in a different country over there..

Simply driving to a sattelite city of KC was amazing to them.

The world does look to us, as as I said for what I do not know, but if we can humble ourselves ( this slavery apology) in thier eyes can that be so bad..?

and is it a true apology or as you said a secondary motive..?

Shit. My ancestors were in Scandinavia when there was slavery in the United States. So I have no real connection to the issue at all. Last time my blood was involved in slavery is when the Norwegian vikings were making the French and the Irish slaves.

Just a precursor to the inevitable reparations. I remember watching coverage of a reparations rally about 8 years ago at the National Mall. Everyone there was singing a song that I found so ridiculous that it stuck with me.

We want a house
Up on the hill
and a 2002
Coupe De'Ville
We want
R e p a r a t i o n s
We want
R e p a r a t i o n s

This also brings up the question of will the blacks pay reparations to the Jews? Or even apologize formally? Farrakhan states the blacks ruled Egypt, and Egypt used Jew slaves.

The thing is that once you go back that far you probably had 'blood' on both sides of any conflict or issue. People just choose the blood line that suits them rather than realising the huge pyramid of people before you e.g.

Over in Spain they have that 2hr..? break in the middle of the day...? rite..?

We get a 30 min lunch shove some crap in our face and back to it..2 weeks off vacation per year..?

Over here in the land of the free we work from 14 or so till 65 yrs old then we get our retirement and that is about 5 years from the national average of how long we live.

This 65yr old retirement was created back when people died at 62 years I am sure our Government would like to raise the age of retirement to 70 years..if you -catch my drift-..

5 years to reap the benifits of 50 years of work..?

and ..we have it easy compared to some parts of the world no real bitch about...

But i never understood this thing of apologizing for slavery or other things we (usa govt) apologize for. It would be ok if these current members owned slaves and then apologized, but i'm sure that none of them do. Or have.

Bigger question:

When is the Library in California gonna apologize for letting Gar use there resources?

When it is addressed properly...it takes away the crutch or in some cases helps lessen the argument to keep hating. Opens people up to move on.

The one thing that usually keeps a government from apologizing is that as soon as you admit guilt or wrong doing....the lawyers now have a reason to sue on someone's behalf.

That is how it works in Canada anyways.
