The backup guitarist in this band has never gotten any props. Here he is without Joe Perry.

Malcolm Young !

Keef # 2 only coz he cant play the galloping rhythms and
Malcolm always uses real standard tuning... None of this lay one finger
across the fretboard to get a complete chord sound.... Malcolm is
Da man.......

Hard to think of other dedicated Hard Rock rhythm players,
all the bands that spring to mind had dual leads....

Izzy ? j a rock already said him...

Actually, I have to throw Steve Jones in the mix here....
His Rhythm was awesome !

Tough thread... most of my favorite bands were power trios or power trios with a singer.

I think Hendrix and EVH's most notable strengths were their rhythm playing and compositions. But that's always been under-shadowed by their lead playing.

Malcomb & Keith are excellent and obvious choices.

Other notables:

Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd all shared rhythm duties.

Phil Collen of Def Leppard.

Dave Rlubek, Duane Rolland & Steve Holland of Molly Hatchet

George McCorkle of the Marshall Tucker Band

Pat Simons of the Doobie Brothers

Joe Strummer of the Clash

Ray Davies of the Kinks

Trying to choose who best lead player is is like arguing the best Baskin-Robbins flavor.

#2,

Uh huh. He's a great lead player, too.

Townshend should be in the top 5 of anyone's best rock rhythm guitarist list.

Actually, the way Entwistle played the bass, they had two great "rhythm guitarists" in that band.

Entwistle was really quite amazing, wasn't he?

Even on an album like Face Dances, which has a lot of material that I think probably would have fared better on a Townshend solo album...was listening to Another Tricky Day recently, and hadn't really listened to the bass stuff on that track all that carefully before...JE was winging off these insane bass runs...just an insane amount of ability, and he almost looked bored onstage when he did it, like there was nothing to it...like the bass solo outro at the end of Dreaming From The Waist...marvelous stuff.

Entwistle's style with Moon was a match made in heaven, but it also worked with Kenny Jones.

Face Dances & It's Hard are two very straight forward (Dull) albums production wise.

But John still pulls of some amazing runs that just do not seem out of place.

Shame there wasn't more like him around today.

For Metal you gotta go with these 2. Great, great riffs.
