It's now 14 years since Jerry left us but...... the music never stopped.

I guess in a different universe without Jimi Hendrix, the Stones, the Beatles, CCR, Jeff Beck, Cream/Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Allman Bros., Lynyrd Skynyrd, I might tend to sleep more and appreciate the Dead. I just don't get it, they're so overrated.

How can you call yourself "Mushroom" and not be a Deadhead?

That's like a Mormon calling himself "Jack Daniels"

American Beauty and Workingman's Dead are two fantastic records. Love the tunes and listen to them fairly frequently. Short, concise, effective songwriting and good musicianship.

Far as the Dead live, think I was just subjected to too much via an endless series of bootlegs played over the span of several months by a filthy, dirty, lazy, wannabe retro hippie in the late 1980s who crashed at my place. All the bootlegs sounded the same to me after awhile, and Jerry's perpetual, meandering, way-too-long live solos sounded like one of those things where you kind of had to be there to appreciate them.

The slacker hippie would load up another bongfull of weed, pop in another bootleg and be like, "hey, man, the Dead haven't played Dark Star live since 1970-whatever..." like if the band decided to play it "on their next spring tour, man" that would somehow translate into this grubby little dope smoker actually paying his share of the rent on time.

That's when I decided that jobless, mooching, freeloader hippes pretty much vanishing at the end of the 1960s was probably a good thing.

Great song! Great thread!

Just the other day, my friends and I were thinking back to seeing them the first time in the early 80's and following them during spring and summer tours through the end.

Jerry's playing style changed sometime shortly after he got sick in the 80's. Not for the better either. But I still like about all of it except for a couple tunes. If I hear Broken Arrow one more time I'm going to scream.
