Barack Obama faces 30 death threats a day, stretching US Secret Service
US President Barack Obama is the target of more than 30 potential death threats a day and is being protected by an increasingly over-stretched and under-resourced Secret Service, according to a new book.

By Toby Harnden in Washington
Published: 8:34PM BST 03 Aug 2009

US President Barack Obama Since Mr Obama took office, the rate of threats against the president has increased 400 per cent from the 3,000 a year or so under President George W. Bush, according to Ronald Kessler, author of In the President's Secret Service.

Some threats to Mr Obama, whose Secret Service codename is Renegade, have been publicised, including an alleged plot by white supremacists in Tennessee late last year to rob a gun store, shoot 88 black people, decapitate another 14 and then assassinate the first black president in American history.

Most however, are kept under wraps because the Secret Service fears that revealing details of them would only increase the number of copycat attempts. Although most threats are not credible, each one has to be investigated meticulously.

According to the book, intelligence officials received information that people associated with the Somalia-based Islamist group al-Shabaab might try to disrupt Mr Obama's inauguration in January, when the Secret Service co-ordinated at least 40,000 agents and officers from some 94 police, military and security agencies.

More than a dozen counter-sniper teams were stationed along the inauguration parade route and the criminal records of employees and hotel guests in nearby buildings were scrutinised.

Despite all this, there were glaring loopholes in the security. Kessler describes how more than 100 VIPs and major campaign donors were screened by metal detectors but then walked along a public pavement before boarding "secure" buses and were not checked again.

It could have been relatively simple for an assassin to have mingled with them in order to get close enough to shoot the new president.

After Mr Obama was elected president, his two children Malia, 11, codenamed Radiance, and Sasha, eight, codenamed Rosebud, began receiving Secret Service protection. Mr Obama's wife Michelle is codenamed Renaissance. The Secret Service also started to protect Vice-President Joe Biden's children, grandchildren, and mother.

Instead of bringing in more agents - instantly identifiable because of their bulky suits, worn over bullet-proof jackets, and earpieces - the Secret Service directed agents to work longer hours to cover the extra load and to miss firearms training, physical fitness sessions and tests.

"We have half the number of agents we need, but requests for more agents have fallen on deaf ears at headquarters," a Secret Service agent told Kessler. "Headquarters' mentality has always been, 'You can complete the mission with what you have. You're a U.S.S.S. agent'."

Mr Biden's constant travel, including back to his home state of Delaware-the burden has meant that all agents on his team have ceased training. According to Kessler, however, they fill in forms stating they have "taken and passed all tests, when they have not, creating a dishonest culture".

The Secret Service has increasingly cut corners after it was absorbed by the new Homeland Security Department under Mr Bush. Kessler said that when Mr Biden threw the first pitch at the first Baltimore Orioles game of the 2009 season, the Secret Service did not screen any of the more than 40,000 fans, stunning his agents and the local Secret Service field office.

Well, you combine Fox News and the fear mongering that it propagates along with the rather less educated/less enlightened to the fact that its 2009 and segregation ended a long time ago and its not surprising.

That's a very good question. In a bunch of cases, home schooling goes hand in hand with religious zealotry and those bastards are convinced that God's bringing "The End Days" and Obama is the Antichrist.

When you consider the fact that some youth groups now include military marching maneuvers as part of their "Sunday School" practices...

There's a thought...:D

It'd have to be when someone else was nearby to take the fall, but believe me, distracting him so he didn't see it coming would be as simple as "Look, it's the ghost of Ronald Reagan!" :lmao:

If the Secret Service is having problems I doubt they tell anybody. Especially some dude writing a book. I have a hard time believing security isn't what it used to be for the president after 9/11.

HA!

I would imagine that if someone REALLY wants to kill him, they'll do it one way or another..

I bet 99% of threats are people talking about what they'd LIKE to do. And I agree with Nitro. I think the LAST thing the SS would do is publicize shortcomings in the presidents security..

The security was/is insane now though.

Most of the time when he was giving speeches abroad it was only secret service and journalists in the audience.

Maybe so, but vitriol that is being spun up by the right is quickly getting out of control.... It doesn't matter that some of it is Bush-originated (economy) or simply promulgating misinformation (healthcare), I really fear one of these dingbats is going to do something tragic...

There was a piece of MSNBC the other day on Rachel Maddow. A Republican author (and whatever else he does politically) was on saying the very same thing as you. I don't know his name; I'd have to to MSNBC.com and try and find the segment.

He was upset by this Republican pot-stirring and warned it could be the trigger some nut needs to do something stupid.

It was interesting to listen to what he said, and nice to see his political views didn't blind him to the possibility of something bad happening.

It could be a real nutjob who ends up doing something. Depending on when that might happen it could be a useful tool. Demoralize and throw people further into confusion. Or make them forgiving of Obama's work. A sock puppet is disposable from the start.

Well I hope you guys in the USA all get good healthcare.

I don't know much about the American healthcare system. Our system in Canada has it's flaws, but I think those flaws are better than marching in the streets fighting over whose's plan is best.

Sure there's an element of socialism, but democracy should have an element of socialism. Help those who need it. The problem is of course those who exploit that.

Was it Francis Schaefer Jr?

Schaefer and his father were evangelicals and part of the original crowd that invented the Religious Right back in the late 1970's. He now considers himself agnostic and is trying to undo some of the damage that he and his former business partners have done to the US.

I like Rachael, but I haven't seen much of her show recently because she's on the same time that Mike Malloy is on the radio, and also I haven't had cable TV hooked up in a while.

Friday though, I just happened to be watching, because Malloy had a rerun on, and I've managed to get a spotty digital TV signal on my computer that works some days better than others.

I'll try and find it later.

Anyway the guy made a lot of sense and wasn't impressed by these proters, or moreso by his belief they are mostly staged.

He was sure concerned about inciting violent nut jobs.

Things are getting out of hand over this healthcare issue.

I don't know the US system, but wouldn't those protesting still be covered under the Obama plan?

Or is the perception that they won't get the treatment they need when they need it part of the complaint?

Who would not be for guaranteed healthcare otherwise?

I'm no fan of Obama but I certanly don't want him shot. Kids would lose their father and a wife would lose her husband. A Democratic vice president would take over and the same policies would continue pretty much. It would stir the nation in a bad way. Obama would become a marter raising him to a higher image than a guy who was president and finished his term/s. What would it accomplish? The fool who shot him would actually make Obama a martered hero in the eyes of many. I can't think of anything positive bennefit of a president getting shot, it just brings more caos, distrust, and grief.

The glass is either half full or half empty. You are looking at the negative. Look at it this way. Not to long ago there was no way in hell we would have a black president. We have one now and he got elected during very troubled times for the country. There will always be racism but things are certainly better across the board now than they were. I wasn't allowed into a club in Hong Kong because I was a round eye. Chinese only unless you have connections.

However, my 'Spic friends talk alot of shit about the Sotomayor nomination as proof that as soon as they get another 5 'Spic judges, we can amend the Constitution to give Texas, and the rest of the American Southwest back to Mexico which rightfully deserves its' return.

Well, in his religion getting shot would make him a martyr for Paradise, so his family probably understands the sacrifice as well as the honor going with it.

If Obama were to be assasinated, it would come from within i.e. a Secret Service rogue, or a CIA-orchestrated "accident" which I'd analyze the between-the-lines commentary on television with utter glee. And if I had to wake up to a woman like Michelle every morning I wouldn't be surprised if we have with Obama the first Prezicide.

Most people don't broadcast that they're racist except in the confines of large groups of trusted friends/associates...or the anonymity of an internet message board.

I doubt seriously anybody's going to slap on a bumper sticker saying something racially insulting about Obama unless they're seriously fucking deranged. Not if they value their property and/or life.

In essence, you have no argument there.
