A post in the Oasis thread got me thinking about this. Got to be music you look back on and think "God, did people really listen to this?", and sometimes, just sometimes "God this is awful...but I want to play it again" because secretly you know it was very, very catchy. And because you know if you put it on at a party, the whole place'll crack up.

This is pretty much my memory of the 1990s music scene. What chance did we ever have of being a good generation, with good taste in music when this was what we were force fed at an impressionable age? still have this guilty love of it and I don't think I'll ever manage to lose it.

Of course, North America didn't have it much better....

Seeing Limp Bizkit this year and doing the Rollin' dance with about 50, 000 other people made me appreciate it more than I ever did before. Harkens back to a time when we were all more innocent, and there's nothing like being with a crowd of 16-25 year olds who all suddenly feel about 12-14 years old again.

I'm interested to see what the rest of you remember, being older than me mostly. Something I can shame my older friends with I hope? :)

I grew up with this...
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nsCXZczTQXo&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nsCXZczTQXo&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

But I still think it ain't that special compared to this... (Also something I grew up with.)

If there's one song that I did not like when it was all the rage, but like it now, it's "Kiss" by Prince. I like Prince, but this was my least favorite song of his. Recently, I listened to the song again and wondered why I was so dead set against it all those years ago.

I always thought of Prince as being a genius but I think during his (80's) heyday he was a bit of a in-love-with-himself egotistical prick. The sort of brooding tortured soul attitude (now taken over by people like Ryan Adams) of nobody knows what it's like to be a millionaire songwriter stance that grows old real quick. Ironically enough, after following him on and off I have to say his best work was in the 80's before he somehow manged to self-hype himself further with all that "New Power Generation" nonsense. Sign 'O' the Times, Parade, 1999, Graffiti Bridge and even that absurd cover he did for Lovesexy were all terrific albums that probably sound better today then from when he first recorded them.

Hey Coyote, Kid Creole vocal phrasing on that song reminds me of DLR on Big Trouble. I met Perri Lister, one of Kid's back-up singers in a West Hollywood screenwriting class. She's better known as the bride in Billy Idol's White Wedding video and mother of his child.
