They were pretty cool around 1974 or so when they were a real rock band.

But as always there were record company people, and idiots in the band that wanted to put out pop music.

When Mr. Roboto came out, I was disgusted. Who in their right mind would allow some mindless crap like that to be released with their name on it?

Christ. Another decent band that got ruined.

How come all anyone remembers is "Mr Roboto"?

What about "Crystal ball", "The Grand Illusion" or "Pieces Of Eight", all great AOR albums.

If you like Pomp-rock, there`s nothing to be ashamed of.

I must admit Dennis DeYoung`s moustache is a bit ghey and Chuck Panozzo is maybe the gayest authenticly ghey rock musician ever.

Oddly enough, the actually gay Chuck looked hetero compared to "showtunes" Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw, who I actually thought was a chick when I first saw a Styx video.

Not at all. But I will admit to thinking a couple of the chicks in Poison looked hot....before I heard the album.... then I was kind of embarrassed about that. :ashamed:

Some great timeless power tunes.

I have posted this many times I went with my buds to the VFW hall to see the Dead Kennedys,Circle Jerks, any other slam punk band you need .

I went to.. STYX, Rod Stewert, Journey,...etc with girls girls GIRLSS!!!

I am not saying you could get laid after the show I am saying you could get laid at the show.:hee:

I bought 4 tickets to Rod Baby one time and my girlfriends friend broke up with her boyfriend before the show so she asked anouther girl .

I am like 18 or so walking into Kemper Arena with three totally sexy babes.

They were all over me...

I peaked early...LOL.

I liked all of those bands .

Yes, I believe in a well rounded appreciation of the arts.

I have seen plays, been to the opera...I wish people weren't so down on other styles of music.

Or, I wish people could try something else and not be so "one line"....

I would always pick Heavy Metal over Pop or any other musical styling, so I am also biggoted .

But, if 50 Black T-Shirts and 5 pairs of Levis is all you want? I can see the ideal of that too.

Today it's MONEY every band has one tune worth a -nine dollar- ticket even if you can't stand the rest. 1978 prices..

They better have 10 these days for me to fork out 500$ for a night on the town...

Which is exactly why Tommy Shaw left Styx. He despised Mr. Roboto.

Styx II and Equinox were hot albums. You Need Love is the high energy guitar driven stuff that kicks your ass.

Why does everyone remember Mr. Roboto is like asking why you crane your neck to see the accident site when you're driving by...

It's like when Dave says you always remember the crash.

Babe I'm Leavin's another one. Let Air Supply do stuff like that.
Everything past that reminds me of the Python Whizzo butter skit.

Styx was a band I could never quite figure out. Did they want to be a Top 40 corporate rock band who wrote lame prom-themed anthems, or did they want to be a Americanized version of an English prog-rock act? I first heard of them at a 420 rally when 'Light Up' was played at exactly 4:20 and thought "this is a pretty cool tune" only to discover to my horror did they not only go on to write 'Mr. Roboto' but 'Babe' just makes my stomach churn.

My guess is their A and R guy at some point said we need another single guys. We need another "Lady." Dennis DeYoung morphs into Dennis DeYucch and it's power ballad time.

that's the division between DDY and Shaw/JY that yielded the current Styx lineup without Dennis. they are now a typical 70's arena rock act.

although Dennis did write a lot of their good rock numbers. he suffered from the same ailment that the band Chicago did. and Phil Collins, and Don Henley, and Eddie Murphy. old and soft

The concept behind the Kilroy album was solid enough. Religious theocracy taking over the future, and all that. In the hands of Roger Waters or even Pete Townsend, it might have been a true masterpiece. Dennis DeYoung, for all his Broadway tendencies, just can't write a decent "rock opera" concept album.

Some of Shaw's tune's were good. Most of the mellow stuff sucked ass. I can handle the hits once in a while. The best version of Renegade is on the Damn Yankees Uprising dvd !! Nugent give's the song some balls !!!

Not before he did a solid album called Girls With Guns. If you have never heard the album you should check it out. After that, however, he had two lackluster follow ups. Granted, Damn Stankees was pretty lame and the stuff he has done since hasn't been any better.

I did not know that it was part of an opera.
Nuttin' better than music that tells a story and can take up an afternoon.

I am going to have to take a listen, I can't see that song fitting into a story line or epic. Just opinion, but I don't think sonnets make for good opera.

I like the song because it is so much fun to enunciate. :D
