Vicodin = Hydrocodone

Percocet = Oxycodone (not to be confused with Oxycontin which is a 12 hour pill)

Both are similar in that they are to be used for breakthrough pain every 4-6 hours. Both are opiates. Both are mixed with a less powerful and less controlled substance such as Tylenol.

My experience, both work just as good. Percocet may be just a touch stronger. Percocet also causes much worse constipation and a little more drowsiness. If you get addicted to either, the withdrawals from the Percocets will be worse.

But just for pain, or if you have a few you wanna take over the weekend for recreational purposes, they are both about the same.

I know someone who was given Percocet, Endocet, Morphine and Fentanyl in the hospital post-op, sometimes alternately, sometimes in conjunction with one of the others. From what I can observe none of these were really effective at relieving excruciating pain. :

The nice thing with Vicodin is doctors under prescribe it. What I mean is, they always put "take one pill every 6 hours for pain". I can tell you from experience that you can take every 2 hours if needed, and you can take 1, 1 1/2, 2, etc... depending on your tolerance, weight, milligram of the pill, etc...

I had oral surgery once & the doctor told me this. He said he would write it as every 4-6 hours, but if the pain was too bad, I could take it every 2 hours.

Just an FYI as doctors don't like to tell you this because of the drugs very high potential for abuse and addiction. But if you only have 20 and take them for a few days, chances are you won't get hooked. It's when you take 100+ over a period of a couple weeks.

I don't know about any of the prescription pain medications as I've never taken any of them, but for headaches, body aches, and other types of minor pains, nothing beats Extra Strength Bayer Aspirin.

And that there is the problem. When I first got it, my Dr. said her husband took it too. She said your exact words "It will remove the pain, but also make you feel great".

I remember a long time ago when I first heard of people being hooked to painkillers I couldn't believe it. I thought if they didn't have any pain, why the fuck still take them? They give you that warm, fuzzy, tingly feeling in your gut. They are the devil.

I wonder, since they are opiates, how close is the effect or real opium compared to the painkillers?

In answer to your question, pure opium is somewhat like that feeling
of "greatness" with oxycodone except far more intense. Your whole
body relaxes and you are more "drunk" in a stoned way than the
oxycodone...

The only thing I've found that consistently works for pain is good ole fashioned aspirin. I experienced some extreme back pain for a couple of weeks a few years back, and I tried just about every one of the major OTC pain relievers. Nothing worked except for Extra Strength Bayer Aspirin, and I've been a strong believer in it ever since.

That sucks. Sorry to hear it. Keep an eye on what the dosage is. Vicodin comes in 5, 7.5, & 10 mg. And Tylenol (acetaminophen) included. If you're getting the small ones, you may need to double up. Another thing that kinda boosts their potency safely is aspirin or ibuprofen. Since neither are in it, you don't risk taking too much of one or the other. Just don't take regular tylenol with them.

But for me, a couple of aspirin with my Vicodin made them perform stronger.

That's strange. The one time I had to take some pills, the painkillers prescribed to me didn't had any effect either, and it also made me feel funny in the head. And worse, since I had to take some antibiotics, I couldn't have any alcohol, so I basically had to deal with the pain.

Wasn't so bad after I kinda got used to it, though.

Pain is just signals sent via the nervous system to the brain to alert us of a problem.

I have a very high tolerance to pain... so I'm able to control the effect of those signals more effectively than most people without the help of drugs. Given this difference... the drugs have less effect than on others. Probably due to the difference in how my brain is wired.

I've been given stout painkillers prior to oral surgery twice... both times they doubled the doses once I arrived for the surgery. Both cases they questioned if I had taken the drugs and I told them yes and had nice mild buzz. The doctors/nurses doubled up and said most people would be semi-conscious at those dose levels... I just told them let's get going while I'm having a good time.

Synthetics has delivered us Coal Chamber, Dashboard Confessional, and that fuck awful Incubus. And unlike their counterparts heroin and morphine, synthetics, while just as additive are much harder to break free of physical dependence which in turn gives a patient (or the idiot who abuses them) more anxiety when not on them making them more additive to other controlled substance if they seek treatment. So, I supposed it must not be related to pain tolerance at all. Must be physiology and genetics, or something like that.

I know my genetics are quite good when it comes to keep foreign stuff away from my body. IF, and that's a big if, I ever catch so much as a common cold, I'll have the symptoms of the beginning, but by the next day, my body has already taken care of it - with a little help from my old friend Jack Daniel's, orange juice and caffeine - and is recovering, so I never had a cold for more than one day, if that much. I though it to be normal, until most people I know told me they're in bed for 3-4 days, maybe a week or more.

Maybe that fast reaction to foreign bodies has something to do with it? Unfortunately, I couldn't get that nice buzz you're talking about, it was really unpleasant, so I never proceeded to experiment. Otherwise, I most definitely would.

Agree. Pantera was awesome...despite the initial lack of radio play & MTV play. Metallica became HUGE after Master Of Puppets, again, despite any radio play or MTV time. Great bands still exist. Hard part is finding them now.

For viewers tuning in late, today's episode had it's beginning in another thread, where two horny fellows offered some admittedly off-color commentary about a woman's corruption of her own son. standin, in her by now terminally bizarre manner, has turned these comments into one of the most ill-conceived and poorly executed moral crusades seen in recent years. Seriously, you'd have to go back to an episode of "Three's Company" to find such loopy, boneheaded logic.

Speaking of lunacy, here's a reminder that "HOUSE" returns with a 2 hour season premiere this evening. The good doctor deals with being committed to a loony bin, while his team struggles without him. Coming your way this evening, only on FOX.

I think the second ending, though less pleasant for me, though quite more pleasant for Standin, who, by the way she acts, doesn't seem to be *ahem* "relieved" in years, would be more dramatic.

So, I supposed it must not be related to pain tolerance at all. Must be physiology and genetics, or something like that.

I know my genetics are quite good when it comes to keep foreign stuff away from my body. IF, and that's a big if, I ever catch so much as a common cold, I'll have the symptoms of the beginning, but by the next day, my body has already taken care of it - with a little help from my old friend Jack Daniel's, orange juice and caffeine - and is recovering, so I never had a cold for more than one day, if that much. I though it to be normal, until most people I know told me they're in bed for 3-4 days, maybe a week or more.

Maybe that fast reaction to foreign bodies has something to do with it? Unfortunately, I couldn't get that nice buzz you're talking about, it was really unpleasant, so I never proceeded to experiment. Otherwise, I most definitely would.

Tried using Jack Daniels as a pain killer a few years back when I had an impacted wisdom tooth, couldn't afford a dentist, and lived out in the sticks, so I didn't want to drive into town to buy extra strength ibuprofen that probably wouldn't have done shit anyway.

The JD didn't do shit for the pain. Eventually I passed out from drinking, but then I had a headache AND a toothache when I woke up. :(

The only pain alcohol is effective on is mental... that's short lived as well til the next morning and then compounded with a hangover.

Both are synthetic opiates that work in certain receptor areas of the brain to quantitively reduce the affect of true physical pain. Unfortunately, with their euphoric, sedative somnolence and what's know as "clouded sensorium" they are rarely used for their intended purpose.

And it's just my theory, but since the increase in synthetic opioids we've had a decrease in quality music over, say, the past 15 years giving rise to such shit as nu metal and *sigh* emo. For example, naturally occurring opioids gave us some of the best music by Hendrix, The Stones, David Bowie, The Who, even Zeppelin. Synthetics has delivered us Coal Chamber, Dashboard Confessional, and that fuck awful Incubus. This could also explain why a lot of "Christian Rock" is as dismal as it is but I have others theories on that. I won't even venture into Limbaugh territory here.

And unlike their counterparts heroin and morphine, synthetics, while just as additive are much harder to break free of physical dependence which in turn gives a patient (or the idiot who abuses them) more anxiety when not on them making them more additive to other controlled substance if they seek treatment. Ah, the evils of the pharmaceutical industry, eh? Like our increasing private prison systems, they have their ass covered in every way possible.

Oh, and my choice was the Brompton's Cocktail which is/was a mixture containing morphine, methadone, amphetamine, syrup or honey, alcohol (90% to 98%) and chloroform water.

Both suck as far as I'm concerned. I was prescribed Vicodin after a bad car accident, and it did absolutely nothing for the pain. It only made me sleepy. I was given Percs after badly breaking my wrist. Same story, but a double dose didn't even make me tired. May as well have given me baby aspirin or even M & M's.

Now Dilaudid, that shit's beautiful!
