A fairly stunning cover of Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain", which begins with a bit of Hendrix' "Little Wing".

The Dickies did their share of covers as well. I still have this 45. You get the impression that they played an old Moody Blues album at 45 rpm instead of 33.

I'll take the Dickies version of Nights in White Satin over the original time. Curious where that version of Gigantor comes from though. Every live Dickies recording I ever heard sounded like crap, but not that one.

These bums weren't too shabby when it came to playin' a cover or two. True to his word, Dave only learned a bit of the words, but he did learn the tune.

I wondered about that as well. It could be a fake, because with the exception of the guitars being mixed differently, it pretty much sounds like the studio version I have on Great Dictations.

True. and the list of cover versions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Hurts) is so long, that it might actually be easier to list who has NOT covered it. (Van Halen hasn't, for one.)

But here's a version of the song I somehow missed, until now......

Yep, but they never released it as a single. Orbison was the first artist to register a hit with the tune. The song was written by the Felice and Boudleaux Bryant writing team.

This doesn't quite qualify as a cover, but I don't care because it's neater than shit. During the drum solo at a Foo Fighters gig in Toronto, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson join Taylor Hawkins for a version of Rush's "YYZ". The crowd goes positively apeshit, and deservedly so. Probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen. From March 22nd, 2008 at the Air Canada Centre. The first clip has better sound, the second a bit better image.

I always liked this version better than the one on the "Kick" album.

An import cassette of "INXSive" made the rounds of my friends in the 80's until it was well worn out, because it was the only place you could hear that version of the song and other early stuff like "We Are The Vegetables". Thank God I found that compilation on CD, because that tape was really worn out by '88 or so.

From the album The Moog Cookbook released in the mid-nineties, this is a cover of Green Day's "Basket Case". The album was recorded using old analog synthesizers and effects, including a Moog or two. This tune winds up sounding like a Mike Post theme crossed with a Doobie Brothers hit (namely Hill Street Blues and What A Fool Believes). Oh, and there are references to the Captain and Tenille as well. I think it is utterly brilliant.

I'm real cautious about covers because they come with the inevitable comparison. There are also different degrees of success. Most often the covers are decent. Sometimes they can be atrocious i.e. Sheryl Crow doing "Sweet Child O' Mine" or Dolly Parton's HORRENDOUS MASACRE OF "Stairway To Heaven". Then you have AWESOME covers where whoever does it really pulls it off and surprises you like Dave's "California Girls", Black Crows doing "Hard To Handle", or ZZ Top nailing the Sam and Dave tune "I Thank You". Of course pulling up the rear is the TRULY ASTOUNDING level where the cover is so incredible it actually is equal to or can make a strong case of being better than the original. Now, this is the rarest of levels because it just doesn't happen that often even with the mindboggeling number of covers that have been played throughout history. This level is reserved for covers like Jimi Hendrix doing "All Along The Watchtower", Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and one of my all time favorites; Jeff Healey covering "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"! This is all my 2 pennies... I'm embed challenged but I'll try to post the last one I mentioned. If it don't work its on youtube. :luck:

Extreme coolness from AC/DC ! I salute the Stones for doing Chuck Berry justice as well . Keef is an admitted and obvious major disciple of Chuck Berry , oddly enough , Keef also has claimed that the AC/Dc Powerage album from 1978 is one of his all time faves and wanted them to tour with the Stones on the '78 Some Girls tour . Apparently , Mick wasn't so hip to the idea . Go figure,,,,,,

The amount of certifiably weird shit you can find at Youtube never ceases to amaze me. Case in point: This track was recorded for some sort of odd and obscure tribute album of Carpenters songs in the early nineties. This tune is pretty much what you'd expect, the typical dour take on a pop song that was all the rage a couple of decades ago. What does stand out is the uncanny way Johnette Napolitano's (Concrete Blonde) voice sounds like Karen Carpenter in places, giving off an almost eery effect that is fairly unsettling.

...Hell, it might be better than the Stones own live version on Flashpoint.

Jérôme Frenchise
06-02-2012, 07:24 AM
I saw the Stones in Paris in June 1990, during the tour that Flashpoint is a highlight of.
The band rendered the song very nicely IMO, but Mick's singing was too low, which weakened it IMO.

I don't think that it is the right thing to do for a band who covers another to try and sound the same, when
they don't try to literally impersonate the original.

Of course we have great examples in VH ("Where Have All the Good Times Gone", "You're No Good") of how
a band can grab a song and make it different, and better in addition.

Eric Burdon & WAR covered "Paint it Black", and if it might be a little long to stay tuned to it throughout, it is a
re-interpretation of the song, maybe a little too re-interpreting, but at least they don't just try to imitate the original,
and it brings something new and more or less (depends on how much you like it or not) pertinent to it.

Wonder if His Purpleness ever heard that cover? He might attempt a similar arrangement with his current band.

The sound is a bit saturated with decibels, but it's about the only video rendition I've found of the Blair Witch Nudists, an AC/DC cover band that played tributes for about 2 years. They all play in other bands (the guitar player on the left leads Wrench, an amazing metal band) and they did that just for fun.
Both guitarists are brothers, and they used to try and play AC/DC tunes together when they were teens.
They wanted me to join in as the vocalist - I tried for a rehearsal, but I gave up in the end because how they played it was like hearing AC/DC themselves, and I thought I could never sing like Bon Scott (they did Bon Scott tunes only) and I would but lessen what they played. I remember when they played Bad Boy Boogie, when the end of the bridge came I could hear the crowd on the If You Want Blood live album... Gasp! :D

They pretty much nailed that cover, though visually it looks weird for "Angus" to be playing the ES-335 while "Malcolm" plays the SG.
