For those of you metal heads who don't know (or care) Hanson are the gurly-haired blonde brothers who had a hit with the irresistibly catchy 'M’Bop' back in 1997 and are NOT to be confused with Hanson PLC which is an international building materials company, one of the largest producers of aggregates in the world, the third largest producer of ready mixed concrete and clay bricks and the leading manufacturer of concrete pipes in the US. Or with the Hanson Brothers – who were the psychotic no-sex-glasses-wearing gulry-haired blond brothers who kicked serious ice-hockey “ass” in the hit move Slapshot.
“Hanson?” says the proverbial roommate.
You know – Hanson. 'M’Bop'. Brilliant single. Probably the last great pop hit of the last millennium.
“Oh, yeah! Hanson! And they had that really annoying little kid on drums. God, he used to piss me off. They still going are they?”
Indeed they still are. And yours truly met them last week! After 'M’Bop' they had “record company trouble”. And another hit album. But nobody noticed. For many it was like HANSON! nothingnothingnothingnothing (yawn and stretch) nothingnothingnothingnothingnothing er, Hanson? Oh yeah Hanson! They had that really annoying little asshole of a drummer, didn’t they? They still going then?
Indeed they still are. And guess what? The day I met them was 11 year old drummer Zak’s 21st birthday! Making him the oldest 11-year-old in human history. But first let’s detour into the wonderful world of Hanson Hating which I know many of you are going to do. When 'M’Bop' knocked pop’s socks off, Hanson became the focus of a super intense hurricane of female rage. This was, you must remember, before the boy band boom. PreSpice. Before Britney. When I was in high school split the social cliques right down the middle. Boys v Girls. The boys hated Hanson because they looked like girls and they wanted to fuck them. And the girls liked Hanson because they looked like girls and they wanted to fuck them. So should YOU like Hanson? No. You SHOULD have liked Hanson back when they did 'M’Bop'. Now it is too late to like Hanson.
