The band named after the home town of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ only had a couple of hits stateside. "Love Hurts" was the big one, of course, and "Hair of the Dog" was an FM radio staple, but AM stations probably refused to play it..... couldn't really say "son of a bitch" on a top 40 station then, let alone base the whole chorus of a song around that phrase.

I don't think they had another hit in the US until that song "Holiday" in the 80's, which I didn't even know was them until I'd heard it a few dozen times.

Mention of them always reminds me of a drunken party in Edinburgh in a second floor apartment during late 80s with our drummer standing in the garden below with a golf club swinging as the hosts extensive Nazareth collection were thrown one LP at a time out the window. :)

Happy times.

In hindsight now that we aren't so cool they weren't that bad and actually now get some airplay on the classic rock station here.

I think they are still playing the odd gig locally in Scotland.

They were a good hard rock band. One of the heavier ones to get airplay, though as usual, it was the ooh baby ballad that got the airplay most of the time (Love Hurts).

Radio are such pussies! Thank god for other avenues, like satellite radio, the net, youtube, etc.

In the UK we were sold the story that they were huge in the USA in the late 70's early 80's, Was that fact or fiction?

I heard a story that AC/DC approached Dan to replace Bon Scott after he passed away, don't know if that is true or BS, but he would have made a great replacement.

Not to detour the thread, but Michael Monroe's album Not Fakin' It really was quite good. The videos for "Man With No Eyes" and "Dead, Jail or Rock 'N' Roll" got some heavy rotation ob MTV's Headbanger's Ball when it came out.

Thanks for posting that video, I'll have to dig out that CD.

My friends and I went to see them every time they played South Florida. They were not huge, but were popular enough to sell out The Hollywood Sportatorium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Sportatorium) whenever they came to town. They never failed to put on a terrific show. In fact, Dan broke his leg one year during a tour, and rather than cancel the show, he performed by sitting on a stool with his leg in a cast. The only other performer I've ever seen with the guts and determination to do something like this was Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, who once played here in a wheelchair after messing up his leg.

Imagine some of the so-called artists of today doing such a thing. Not likely. That is the sort of thing that earns the respect as well as the undying appreciation and devotion of fans. This is the band's website: Nazareth | The Real Nazareth (http://www.nazarethdirect.co.uk/nazareth/) They put out an album of new material last year called The Newz, and it is quite terrific.

I'd say James Hetfield fit that category in 1992, going back out on the road with serious burns all over his body from that pyro accident. Though he couldn't play guitar for a while.

This tune became a top 40 hit, and oddly sounds like nothing else the band ever recorded.

When I was 13, me and a friend used to steal her pop's weed and pills and listen to his old beat up "Hair of the Dog" 8-track so I associate Nazareth with the beginning of my rebellious phase. "Beggar's Day" is still one of my favorite tunes.

On a separate note, I read somewhere not too long ago that Dan McCafferty is one of Axl Rose's biggest influences. Never noticed before that, but it's actually pretty evident.

I'd say James Hetfield fit that category in 1992, going back out on the road with serious burns all over his body from that pyro accident. Though he couldn't play guitar for a while.

I saw Rivers Cuomo of Weezer sing and play with a cane next to the mic and his leg in a cast after a car accident sometime in the 90s...
