Alright, so, my friend Keith from school owns an original production run SS solidbody guitar from the late 80's or early 90's. He's going to trade it to me for my hardtail Washburn Idol and some cash, not much. The thing is a cross between an SG and a Strat, he says. It's red in color and has hot-rodded EMG humbuckers in it. It also features a double-locking Floyd Rose whammy bar... And a 22 fret rosewood neck. I don't currently have a picture of it, but the guitar seems sick. What I was wondering was, does anyone know ANYTHING about the guitar/s i'm talking about? If so, thanks, because i've looked around quite a bit for anything on them.

If you can get me a shot of the neck pocket and heel (if its a bolt-on) I may be able to identify the factory for you.

Never heard of SS though.

You know, Kramer was mostly an importer of Japan- and Korean-made guitar parts assembled in the US.. I know one or two guys actually had some skilz there, even if they weren't utilized to make an entire guitar.

I'm glad Kramer is out of business.

All I know is that it's a 22-fret rosewood neck with a Kramer-esque banana headstock that trims down to a point. Then, it's bolt-on with four screws into the body. He doesn't have a means of taking pictures with it, but it doesn't have any strings on it so he thought about bringing the neck into school. If so, i'll take pictures... But once I physically get the guitar, I will take more pictures.

Odd name for a company.

Why not Gestapo Guitars, it has more of a ring to it.

I've seen one or two. It's worth about $50 and I doubt a pawn shop would even give you that...

buy a good Korean guitar like an Agile or something. I wouldn't trade a Washburn for it. Especially not an older Washburn...

They're supposedly rare, i'll have to see tomorrow when Keith brings it in to school (neck and all, disassembled). But, the Washburn isn't anything special, just a hardtail Lyon Washburn Idol (Think of it like a Starcaster Strat). It's not very old, but hey, he wants to trade...

@Sesh
My mistake, it's S/S guitars, not SS. Sorry.

The shittiest guitar I ever owned was a Kramer. I also think the guy that ran it was an opportunistic asshole more into selling the hype than any kind of quality. I think he kissed Eddie's ass and took advantage of the relationship.

Are you bashing American made Kramers, or the Asian made ones?

Better yet, why are you flaming in MY thread? Haha. I posted this thread to see if anyone knew anything about what I was discussing. :tongue0011:

Well, it is not exactly 'flaming' to talk smack about someone who is not even a member of this site.

I was never impressed by Kramers.

But to each his own.

The Kramer Voyager I had in high school was American-made, and had funky electronic issues from the factory, but except for having a neck like a baseball bat was otherwise OK...a couple of my friends had Barrettas, and while some played well, they always looked like melted wannabe Charvel/Jackson Strats to me...:hee:

Haven't been knocked out by the current Gibson/MusicYo/Whatever - Kramer offerings of late, either..

But I've never seen an SS.

isn't Lyon Washburn's budget/import brand?

Yes, I think I said that. It's a nice guitar for the price and brand name, two really good humbuckers, a heavy body, glossy black finish, and a nice rosewood neck. But i'm getting older and want better guitars...

VanHalenFan5150

Well, I thought about it, and I seem to think that the S/S is better...

S/S Guitar
-22 Fret rosewood neck
-Hot-rodded high gain EMG pickups in neck and bridge pos.
-Double-locking Floyd Rose trem
-Glossy red finish
-Volume and tone control
-"Super-Strat" body design
-Banana headstock that crosses between a Kramer and a Jackson
-3 way pickup switch
-Low action

And, my Lyon Washburn Idol
-22 Fret rosewood neck
-2 no-name humbuckers
-Hardtail string-through design
-Glossy black finish
-VCC Tone control (Blends humbucker sounds into single coils)
-Weird body design (Looks like an SG, a Tele, and Les Paul had babies)
-Arch-top headstock
-3 way selector switch
-Unfixable high action :/

In my opinion, the S/S sounds better... Keith says it plays and sounds like a beast.

ELVIS

S/S Guitar

-22 Fret rosewood neck - big deal

-Hot-rodded high gain EMG pickups in neck and bridge pos. - No such thing

-Double-locking Floyd Rose trem - made of cheap cast metal that will break and sounds like crap

-Glossy red finish - Wow! Buy it before someone else snaps it up...LMAO!

-Volume and tone control - made in china and will break

-"Super-Strat" body design - whatever that means

-Banana headstock that crosses between a Kramer and a Jackson - woo hoo, you'll be the talk of the town

-3 way pickup switch - wow!

-Low action - Is that what the guy told you ??

Keith says it plays and sounds like a beast. - is that good or bad ??

That's my attempt at a Frankenstrat given the limited resources I had at the time. :tongue0011:

That is always good, I respect that. Some people are really just douchebags about it. If you're better than them or worse then them, they insult you either way, it's like Catch-22. I'm certainly not the best but I have some really good guitar gear, better than most people. If you wanted, I could list my gear in another thread. But this one's for my Showster S/S guitar.

I found out that my guitar was made in the late 80's or early 90's, is American made, and i've noticed it has a serial number on the backplate. Next to the traditional pickup switch, it has a much smaller two-way switch, which I am not sure what it does.

I will post pictures very soon. And I need a high E string, haha.

Not putting him on the spot E.

Many musicians, myself included, can point to one point in their life where they decided playing guitar (or music) is what they truly wanted to do.

In my case, it was seeing ZZ Top in 1976. When I walked out of the venue, I knew I MUST play guitar.

I was not meaning "must" as in "SOMEONE ELSE telling you that you MUST do something".

It was meant more as when YOU tell YOURSELF you must do something.

Understand? :)

Ace was not the guy who kicked me in the ass suddenly and made me want to play guitar, but the Christmas of 1976 I found a Kiss Easy Guitar book, and was able to learn the entire Kiss Alive album within a year or so. His solos were easy enough for a beginner to learn, but, as a beginner, I still found them challenging. I always could pick up solos easier...it took me awhile to get a lot of chordal things down.

Only time I ever saw Adrian Vandenburg was when he was playing in Whitesnake in the mid-80s.

Anyone else remember being a 14-yr old VH freak? :D Ah, memories.

When most of us were your age, VH rolling into town was like the circus showed up...only with more dancing girls, and less animal poop. :hee:

:jumping0041::band::jumping0041:

Remember it well! Learning Al's drum licks and trying to find anything that was shown live on TV!

The thing that really made me want to play guitar was Kiss and Ace. He looked so cool with smoke coming out of his guitar and how low he wore it. What really made me decide to go over to drums was Wipe Out......I was 10 when I tried playing guitar and 11 when I switched to drums....

Van Halen's going on tour again, 2010 World Tour... Where have you guys been? But anyway, I live near a very major city in Florida; Tampa/St. Petersburg. If they were to come down here, that's likely where they would play. And it's only a 45 minute drive. The tickets wouldn't be too bad, but I still would like acceptable seats. :tongue0011:

I'd be willing to spend upwards of $50+ to see them. I've been saving my money lately, and hey, there's not much good shit to spend it on.

on the last tour, $50 got nosebleed seats...

When I saw them in 1978, it was $8.50 and that was for General Admission, so I got right in front, holding onto the rail. :D

I recall two experiences sometimes out of order, and because I'm tired tonite I don't exactly care:

I saw Van Halen when I was 10 one summer, at a backyard party I wasn't invited to, just a neighbor kid riding up a driveway on a bike with dozens of older people standing around cheering with plastic beer cups in their hands. Typical SoCal kegger party.

That was free, and during a break the guitar player strapped an explorer-shaped guitar on me and showed me A and E chords for a few minutes.

Then the following year's fall I saw the end of a set over a fence by standing on my bike seat and handlebars looking over.

Didn't pay for that one either.

They got famous later on so I can't say I saw "Van Halen" live yet. I missed out on the US Festival which was my only chance but being about the 30th in line at Music Plus, tickets sold out in ten minutes.

I've been reiterating that story for 10 years or more now, you're pretty green regarding the stuff I've done and who I've known huh?

I mean you come in here about the time in 2003 when Hagar goes on tour with VH or whenever that was to have a shitfit, and you seem to be stuck shitting yourself ever since.

It may help to actually read what some people here have said over the years instead of just attacking any opportunity you see fit.

Are you kidding, dumbass? Who would it help to "actually read" what YOU post on the interweb?

Next thing you will be trying to tell us you gave Boy George a blowjob in the bushes at Griffith Park!

I know the story is at least partially false, because at that time, Ed was playing on a Stratocaster. It was white with a white pickguard and two single coils and a humbucker, though some pictures show three single coils...

Classic Van Halen Gallery and Multimedia - Ed & His "original" baby - Powered by PhotoPost (http://classicvanhalen.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=7036&cat=539)

Ed didn't acquire an Explorer-shaped guitar until 1977, and it was an Ibanez Destroyer-lawsuit guitar. On the tracks for the first and third albums, any song that did not include a whammy bar dive was done on the Destroyer, which he cutely called "the Shark." In Running With The Devil, the opening guitar gliss was done behind the Tune-O-Matic bridge at the stopbar. To this day, I cannot recreate this sound whatsoever with my guitars behind the nut.

Do I really need to continue this for the sake of proving Gar wrong?

Don't worry about it, VHF5150...he'll be back to own himself later...;)
But it conceivably could've been his then-neighbor Chris Holmes' Ibenhad Destroyer he used to borrow regularly...unlikely, though.

Actually, if you think about it, that scenario is FAR more believable...

So when you had Eddie's guitar on your "workbench" did you remind him that he taught you those cords.....now how long after that did he sell that guitar to Mick Mars?

Because in your lack of intellect and the power of Wikipedia, o grateful one, I know for a fact that Ed didn't play on an Ibanez Destroyer in the club and backyard days. He played on a Les Paul Custom with sunburst finish, and more often than not he played on an old Strat. This was before he purchased his Frankenstrat from Boogie Bodies, however.

He didn't get the Destroyer until before the first album, and, like i've already said, he played on it for anything that didn't include a whammy bar dive.

A sphincter sez what?

All YOU have to do is do some research on the net and you can see for yourself.

Oh, I forgot, you were Ed's best friend back in the late 70s, right?
