All I had at age 14 was:

Kay SG copy, with pretend humbucker covers hiding one coil
Japanese classical guitar
Harmony 300 tube amp
DOD 250 distortion
Realistic Stereo Preamp

.. about $200 in those days total loot value.

The DOD I paid $29.95 new at Pedrini's Music, sold it about ten years ago for $75 with original box and papers to some collector going home to Israel.

The only things I bought myself were the cables, strings, Frankenstrat, and the G-Dec 30 amp... Totaling about $300-350...

i'd skip the Monster cables. you're not going to need 'em just noodling around at home.

At 14 I had a Mephis Les Paul copy and a Fender Champ amp. It actually played and sounded good. I first guitar setup was an old Fender Mustang played through an old tube stereo amp pushing some car stereo speakers. I had not idea what impedance was and the power tube plates would glow red. It sounded raunchy and then one day it wouldn't work so I used a Radio Shack solid state amp and it didn't sound as good.

At 14 I too had a Memphis, but I think it was a Melody-Maker copy more like a double cutaway LP junior....a silverface Fender tube VibroChamp (that I wish I still had, that thing sounded great) and an MXR Distortion +.....:D

I have a reissue Distortion + in the spare box...;)

I traded my Fender Champ for a Marshall Lead 12. For solid state is was a good amp. I wish I still had that one.

I started out on a simple 5-watt Lyon L5 amp... Had some good tone for a 5-watter but my friend Alex had a Jay Turser 15-watt that had INCREDIBLE tones for Solid State.

The best advice I got at 14 I didn't follow till 5 years later: "get a Marshall straight 4x12 cabinet with Celestion speakers."

Damn, you're off to a great start. I was playing on my tennis racket at age 14. I didn't start playing until I was 20. :)

My mom didn't gimme shit for my gear, she kept saying "you can't eat a guitar better save your money."

But was she proud when I got a paper route to pay for my first electric, against her wishes.

Guitars are cheaper now than they ever were.

Heh...at age 14 I had nothing. I had been playing on my Dad's Martin nylon string classical guitar for a couple of years, but was not motivated to go electric and get really serious until I was 16.

At 14 I felt like I was way behind the other kids already doing bands.

I think these days, a kid should start before 9 years.

I started playing guitar in 1978. Guitars were expensive. In high school I played a Les Paul Custom through a master volume Marshall half stack. I actually got in trouble for playing too loud at a high school battle of bands.

We were playing The Kink's song Destroyer and I had the Marshall flat out and blazing. LOL!

Yeah, I don't turn my amp up over 4 when I practice at home. It's a 30 watt, and even then, 4 is like a chainsaw; I kid you not. When I play for talent shows, I crank it.
