Just downloaded Firefox - Better than IE ??

From what I've read, it's hands down better, so I downloaded it tonight for shits and giggles...

What do you guys think ??

I've been using it for a few years because I'm all cool and hip and so forth.

Ironically your timing is shit as over the last few months it's been a bit shit and getting a lot of bad press.

The advert blocker stuff is good.

I would give it a go for a while but if you find it crashing I would look at the Chrome thing.

Overall, Firefox is still the best browser. The last few releases have had a "memory hog" issue, but that's easy enough to fix. Recommend the AdBlock Plus and No Script plug ins. I didn't get a lot of the nasty shit that some got here from the little cyber-jihadist shit for brains because of the no script. And it also make it easy to shut off the google analytics tracking crap and a bunch of other similar shit that sends your info to God knows where.

Chrome is fast, but there's no plug ins yet, and I doubt Google is in any hurry to allow plug ins to their browser which will disable their own company's tracking bugs.

+1 Agreed. I didn't have any issues from the jihadist-douche either thanks to no script. Been using it for a few years now, and I almost hate using IE now.

The thing about Chrome is that it is speedier because less people use it. It does read some sites in an odd way, however. And whenever you report a bug, for one reason or another the so-called help center always says "We are investigating this, and are working on an update" which never seems to arrive. When you complain about it, more often than not the response is petulant to the point of blaming the user for bringing up the issue. Sort of like returning an undercooked hamburger to the cashier and being told "What do you expect, it's fast food." :umm:

I just nuked my computer and reformatted everything and forgot to plug those into the new browser...I've used Firefox and like it a lot more than IE8, although I think IE9 might be due out soon...

Well, ANY browser is better than Internet Exploder.

Exploder is so bad that it's ridiculous.

But I'm personally biased towards Opera. It's by far the safest, fastest and uh... stable-est browser available.

No kidding. More than once, Windows XP froze completely, but Opera kept going until I decided to hit the reset button.

The ONLY problem with Opera, and this has gradually diminished over the years, is the first couple of hours. You take some time to get adjusted to it, but after you do, it's smooth sailing for eternity.

Plus, I recommend such a browser to certain Army members quite strongly, 'cause since version 10 from a couple of months ago, Opera has an in-built spell-checker, so... :)

Whatever ya do, stay away from Safari. It really doesn't offer anything new, and in fact it appears to simply offer appearance differences made more for the sake of expedience rather than improved functionality.

Firefox offers built in spell-check as well, but even with updating it's content via dictionary add-ons, it still has somewhat limited parameters.

I tried Safari when it was first released for the PC, because the Mac users were always raving about how great it was. Couldn't see what was so "great" about it myself. I probably uninstalled it within an hour.

Opera is probably what I'd use if Firefox didn't exist, but Firefox just seems to work better for me.

I too tried it when it first came out, it was HORRIBLE.

I couldn't believe a browser worse than Internet Exploder could exist... but there it was, installed on my computer, like a really bad virus.

I think I blocked it outta my mind, it was that bad...

By the way FORD, thanks again for mentioning No Script. Whenever I attempt to ad videos to a thread full of them, my computer becomes over-taxed to the point of almost freezing. With No Script, I can keep the other videos in the thread from loading and slowing things down. Probably the worst thing about Safari was that it insisted on installing all the other AppleCrap along with it. QuickTime, I Tunes and all that shit.

Well, I'm probably the one guy left on Planet Earth who doesn't own an I Pod, so I don't need a resource hog media player, and the QuickTime files will play back on most other media players with the right codec. So that was strike one against it before I even got to the Safari browser itself.

I agree with most on here about FF. I've been using it for a few years (after Ford recommended it in a thread) on all my machines and it seems much less shit attaches itself to FF as compared to IE. They also have a cookie approval option that is nice once you get it tuned in (and you'd be surprised to see how many of the little fuckers that want in)....

First thing you should run is CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) (formerly called Crap Cleaner, and that still describes what it does) That will clean out all the old shit in your IE cache as well as the dead stuff in your registry.

Then install FireFox. And maybe buy some RAM if you can't afford a new PC at the moment (though the prices right now are probably as good as they're gonna get, with the holiday commercialism orgy upon us)

I took your advice last year on drinking things with real sugar, instead of that HFCS (poison ;)) that's in most things today. Taco Haven, a little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant down the street knows to get me a Mexican Coke when we go eat there on Sundays. Thanks to you! ;)

I just noticed that a locally based, but regional, supermarket chain (Wegmans) is carrying the authentic Mexican Coke as well as Fanta in the Hispanic food section. It's even in glass bottles...

Nice thing about Firefox is it has popup blockers, and crash placeholders: if the laptop cord unplugs from the cigarette lighter here in the RV, I can reboot then click Safari again and it will ask "start a new session / continue with last session" and all my browser windows will return.
