WASHINGTON – The estimated time when whites will no longer make up the majority of Americans has been pushed back eight years — to 2050 — because the recession and stricter immigration policies have slowed the flow of foreigners into the U.S.

Census Bureau figures released Wednesday update last year's prediction that white children would become a minority in 2023 and the overall white population would follow in 2042. The earlier estimate did not take into account a drop in the number of people moving into the U.S. because of the economic crisis and the immigration policies imposed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The 2050 estimate is one of four projections released that is based on rates for births and deaths and a scenario in which immigration continues its more recent, slower pace of adding nearly 1 million new foreigners each year. Demographers said that scenario offers the best look for now at the future demographic makeup based on current conditions, rather than other models which assume higher rates of immigration.

The United States has 308 million people today; two-thirds are non-Hispanic whites.

The total population should climb to 399 million by 2050, under the new projection, with whites making up 49.9 percent of the population. Blacks will make up 12.2 percent, virtually unchanged from today. Hispanics, currently 15 percent of the population, will rise to 28 percent in 2050.

Asians are expected to increase from 4.4 percent of the population to 6 percent.

The point when minority children become the majority is expected to have a similar delay of roughly eight years, moving from 2023 to 2031.

The population 85 and older is projected to more than triple by 2050, to 18.6 million.

The actual shift in demographics will be influenced by a host of factors that can't be accurately forecast — the pace of the economic recovery, cultural changes, natural or manmade disasters, as well as an overhaul of immigration law, which may be debated in Congress as early as next year.

As a result, the Census Bureau said the projections should be used mostly as a guide.

The agency also released numbers showing projections based on "high" rates of immigration — more likely if more-flexible government policies and a booming U.S. economy attract large numbers of foreigners — as well as "low" immigration, a possible scenario if U.S. policies don't change much while the economy substantially improves.

_With high immigration, the minority "tipping point" is moved up to 2040, two years earlier than the previous estimate. At that time, Asians would have a much larger share, at 8 percent, since their population growth is more dependent on immigration than birth rates.

_With low immigration, the "tipping point" arrives by 2045.

Under a purely theoretical "zero immigration" scenario in which the U.S. effectively does not take in any immigrants, whites would remain the majority in 2050, making up a solid 58 percent of the U.S. population. In such a case, the share of Hispanics would increase to 21 percent because of high fertility rates and a younger population.

Under a "zero immigration" model, the 65 and older population also grows substantially faster, comprising nearly 1 in 4 Americans.

"These projections show that immigration will serve to replenish our labor force as baby boomers age into retirement and make our population younger without overburdening our schools and other community resources," said William H. Frey, a demographer at Brookings Institution.

We got along fine as we're both from Brooklyn and the same age, but sometimes we'd butt heads over business. One time I heard him talking to another coworker about another coworker, calling him "chinaman," and they're laughing about it and all. This was while I was in the room. I was thinking, "Hey, man. What the hell?" He never struck me as racist. At the time he was dating a black woman who eventually became his wife; he got along with our multi-ethnic staff. But I became distant afterwards, only speaking with him if it was necessary.

I saw him again a few months ago in the street. He called out to me from across the street then came over and hugged me, gave me his phone number and everything. I was like, "Huh?" What kind of person is he?

Yeah.... I worked for an ARCO Am/Pm store back in the late 80's. Everybody there got along with each other, and we would all joke around about some fairly "politically incorrect" stuff... usually sexually related subjects. Or as the boss put it, when he was training new hires "more like lack of sex subjects because none of us are getting any".

The district manager was this German lady who spoke with a heavy accent, so naturally a lot of jokes were made about "Nazis" and throwing somebody in the oven along with the barfburgers if they didn't do what she wanted. A few of the people who worked there were of German ancestry, myself included, and we didn't find anything offensive about the jokes. One day though, one of the mock signs somebody put up with a swastika over the corporate logo got taken down. Come to find out that one of the guys there was Jewish. The jokes didn't bother him, but actually seeing the Swastika portrayed set him off. I had no idea the guy was a Jew.

Lot's of Samoans and Tongans in the Mormon church. I used to hang out with the ones on the BYU football team. Alcohol, drugs, and tagging lot's of ass. I could get laid at BYU easier than I could at the University of Washington. I caught hell from the same hypocrites when I came out and called the church a fraud. It's how the church keeps chugging along, it uses public shame to intimidate people from leaving and in places like Utah, it can cost your your job or career. As long as you pay enough tithing so it looks like you are really paying 10% of your gross income and run through the busy work hoops, and obey the leadership, that's all they care about. If you are breaking the church rules and not getting caught publically, you can climb the leadership ladder. One reason so many Mormons are expert liars and one reason there are so many ponzi schemes in Utah. The church actually rewards liars and punishes those who are truthful.

The Mormon church dictates that you marry another member of the church in their temple cerimony and forget about thinking for yourself. That could get you excommunicated. It's all about keeping the next generation in the cult and keeping them indoctrinated and brainwashed and the more kids the better for them. This is how a multi-generational cult keeps going.

A true religion discusses the scriptures but leaves the final decision making up to the membership. When a religion starts using peer/community/family pressure to extort you into participating in their program, the freedom of choice meets punishment and the freedom of choice ends. I'm surprised to hear about your perception that Chinese people are hated and envied. I think a lot of people quite rightly have serious concerns about the current Chinese government but I've never seen or heard any ill feeling towards Chinese people ever but maybe that's a US thing? Maybe my perception is based on numbers because the community here is relatively small but my impression has always been that because Chinese people are happy to take part in the local culture and don't usually have strong religious superstitions they are the model for the melting pot of multiculturalism.

Totally...through marriage, pop culture and other things race doesn't mean what it used to even when I was a kid. My younger brother married a Mexican gal...no one on either side of the family (hers and his) batted an eye. No one refused to go to the wedding and all holidays are now double the amount of people. Her family and my family get together for everything. My two nieces have never had a problem in school or with our extended family.

It's fucking normal! This is, IMO, the best way to beat racism.

The only reason I know about my them was they were a huge part of my father's and grandfather's life.....both of them used to stay summers with them and I just remember the stories about them from my childhood. Even today, you're more likely to find squid in a Korean restaurant than a Chinese restaurant around here. With maybe a couple of exceptions up in the International District in Seattle.

Or generally speaking, areas that are more culturally diverse also are more diverse when it comes to food choices. I can remember a time when this town had one pizza place, two burger joints (neither of which were a national chain) and maybe two or three really bland westernized "Chinese" restaurants where most people ordered "chop suey", "chow mein" or "egg foo yung". The spicier forms of Chinese food were unheard of then. Let alone Korean food, or Thai food, or a Mongolian grill.

Or a Mexican restaurant with more authenticity than Taco Bell, for that matter.
