Time for the annual "bell and whistle" show that is NAMM to roll into the Anaheim Convention Center again...all the hot new gear under one roof...like the biggest, loudest Guitar Center/Electronics store in the world...or sticking your head in a hornet's nest... Still, a gearhead's playground.

Got heavy (regular) work stuff going on this week, was going to take a day off but can't so won't be going until Saturday (barring complications...at work) but figured I'd go ahead and start the thread in case someone who actually posts pictures *cough* makes it there before me...

Plus some of the manufacturers are already posting cool teaser pics and vids...

Like here's the Charvel section in the FMIC exhibit in the early stages of set up...

(Good to see them putting out some pointy headstocked Charvels this year!) :killer:

The Jackson section under construction...

Biggest *gasp* thus far would be Yngwie's move to Seymour Duncan, and on a lesser-known note Tony MacAlpine leaving Carvin for Ibanez...will be interesting to see what develops...

Yeah, anyone with a camera and an interest in seeing the place half-empty is worthy of posting pics on THIS board, of all places.. you must know NAMM had less than half it's regular exhibit space sold as of late October which was the deadline for going. And I doubt they make any further progress than that in late add-ons by showtime so it is quite possible they close Hall E and a good portion of D hall too.

Yup, it's gonna look like a 1970's capacity show.. lo, how the mighty have fallen!

The good show to go as a must-see convention anymore is the Ampshow. NAMM is too snobbish anyways for non-industry folk to attend anyway..

First I saw it was on the O.G. MusicMan Wolfgangs and the Peaveys, dunno if it was Ed's idea or one of theirs? :umm:
Totally get the functionality aspect of it, yeah - but I'd still rather have to take the neck off (loosen it just enough, whatevs) to adjust it. Hideous.
But then, I dig the way the Charvel fretboards are squared slabs like Gibsons. Hate the way Fender and most round them at the top, looks lame in comparison, IMO.

Anyway - here's some Jon Levin Charvel footage..not seein' a ton of posts from other guitar makers (even Fender and Gibson) yet...will keep looking.

Yeah, I pretty much disassembled him of ever claiming knowledge of his own ass right in front of his "handler" in the booth.

Actually I feel sorry for them both, he could make more money working at the supermarket on stock crew than strutting that filthy wig and belly around the booth.. but then he wouldn't have a belly. He'd actually have to work lift and move stuff if he worked at the market.. and cut his hair.

I had a good impression of him. How long did you work for him. I thought the whole Van Halen management and road crew were top notch. I was expecting huge egos but there was none. It didn't matter if you were an independant contractor, you were on the team that night you were on the team. Dugan made sure we all got something to eat and the party was at the bass bin. I wanted to check out Ed's stuff but that was off limits and not too friendly over there. It was like they had secrets to hide or something. Anthony and Dugan had a nice open atmosphere and that is where the road crew hung out. Mike was more of that. I never saw Roth until he was onstage, Eddie was a Hermit, Alex did come out to the catering area and seemed to be all business.

My favorite truss rod adjustment is the Fender bullet you see on the 70's Strats. The Musicman/ Peavey adjustment looks like what was on those racks they tortured people on in the old days. I do like the carbon fiber reinforced necks. I've never had to readjust one after it's set up. I never have had to tweak the neck on my Wolfgang ever and it goes from freezing cold cars to warm venues all the time.

I only worked for him (after being introduced by a mutual friend) a couple of times, think it was in '02-03 (?) when he was doing MA-downtime side work with Weezer and Willie Nelson (of all people), and have spoken with him a couple of times since. GREAT guy. Funny, personable, genuine, not to mention pays well - again, can't say enough good stuff about him. Would work for him again in a heartbeat (y'know, were I not otherwise gainfully employed...lol). He showed me one of his original VH tour roadcases (old spray-painted logo, whole deal) and said something to the effect of "the stories this thing could tell..."

They were playing up the angle of the San Dimases being the thing to have, and everyone knowing it was the employee's built guitars that got taken to NAMM in the beginning of Charvel, I bet they decided by committee to let the Mr. Charvel guy run his mouth as if he really did have some input.

But no, stylings, options, hardware.. fit n finish, that's all decided in Scottsdale AZ not Corona, CA.

The Employee Touch is a nice angle. Look at the pretend bench they brought and the pretend guitar assembly they thought to show.. it's just for the pictures to fool people into believing that their guitar was assembled and setup by some fat pothead like themselves who got all damn day to sit around playing Pantera riffs and stare at the finish till they reach a trance-state of semistoned slumber.

"That dude's a stoner, he must really care about the things I like in a guitar.. cool."

My show favorite: the new Gotoh teeny-weeny tuner. It weighs only a few grams and you can screw it down directly to the peghead, no thruhole required.

Didn't see any titanium parts guys, like the world really needs another snakeoil salesman on the floor..

The show letdown: with all the newly-freed up space all over the show from all the music manufacturers dying like flies, you'd think ZVex could get out of the mid-booth tunnel between Hall C and D, but he stayed put. Cmon Zack get it together and get visible!

GIBSON had no booth! The Artist Relations guys from Beverly Hills office managed to share a booth with a distributor on the main floor (!) in the nick of time, some say due to dangerous repercussions of importing illegal / misreported / misstated-species timber which has a few people such as Hartley Peavey scrambling to fund a buyout.

The show SHIT: Behringer, as usual. Fuck them, fuck their crap, fuck the ugly, knock-off shitty products they make and fuck that stupid pair of idiots running the operation - both the German dork circuit makerthief plagiarist, and his chinese financier.

I hope they die of violent traffic-related injuries.

(at least they pulled the JMP and JCM800 knockoffs out of production)

Your lucky if your Behringer stuff lasts in the bedroom. Take it on the road and it self destructs. I actually watched a Behringer bass amp go up in smoke. The power stages take a beating because they have to put out a lot of juice and still keep the headroom. Bass frequencies just eat up cheap power stages. I would avoid Behringer and Hartk like the plague. Especially if you are taking the stuff around to gigs. It just doesn't hold up.

I tired that new Carvin light weight bass head with the preamp tube you can switch in or out. The thing is great. You can nail any tone and it's $400. MADE IN USA too. I notice Peavey is making their stuff in China. A lot of it. Only the high end is USA made so I'm leaning to Carvin now. I've used their mixers and they are great. If you can't tell I'm in a MADE IN USA kick.

I watched an interview with Hartley and he said he could have sold Peavey off a long time ago and retired a rich man. He says he stays in the business because he still enjoys it. His philosophy is to use new technology to create a quality, affordable product that's useful. He's not so much into selling nostalgia or image. He's into technology and doing something different. I really don't think Gibson fits into Hartley's business model.

Nitro Express

In an interview he was showing the Peavey custom shop. He kind of seemed bored and said he had 45 years of tube amp building experience and it really wasn't anything new but customers are interested in boutique amps so they decided to get into the business of doing that. Where he clearly was excited was that new tube bass head with the switchable power supply. Also, the new light weight power amps. He's into new things and he was really excited about that new power supply technology which his engineer on his payroll exclusively designed for Peavey. He went into all the problems with such supplies and how it took them years to get it right and reliable.

Gibson is a nostalgia, high end brand. In a way, so is Fender. Those companies are about selling the old designs of the 50's and 60's. They may innovate those designs but it's still Les Paul's, SG's, Flying V's, Explorers, Stratocasters, Telecasters, Jazz Basses, Precision basses ect... They sell nostalgia. Harley Davidson did the same thing in their marketing. Take old technology and put a modern spin on it. It's basically selling childhood dreams and memories more than technology.

Here is some cool stuff for you Rhoads fans.

A Family Affair: Jackson Randy Rhoads Tribute Model (http://www.themusiczoo.com/blog/2010/a-family-affair-jackson-randy-rhoads-tribute-model/)

One of the most exciting moments yet at NAMM 2010 for us was the unveiling of the Jackson Randy Rhoads Relic Tribute Model. Randy’s bother Kelle and sister Kathy (pictured above, along with the Tribute prototype) as well as guitarist Scott Ian were on hand to talk about Randy’s legacy and his impact on music. It got a bit emotional with the family there clearly feeling Randy’s presence in the room. Kathy and Kelle are great people and it was a pleasure to meet them and talk about Randy with his family. After the jump, let’s talk about the guitar.

Randy’s Tribute Model is a direct replica of his original 1980 Jackson asymmetrical V-shaped guitar that he personally designed. He intended to call this body style the “Concorde” and it is widely regarded as the “first pointy guitar”. The original guitar had been kept at the Rhoads’ family music school since his death, and they say it had not been out of the case in over 20 years when Chip Ellis and Mike Shannon arrived to inspect and measure every aspect of it. The neck was straight, and it was still in tune, amazingly. Seeing the guitar in person revealed details that were only previously seen in photos, such as the real ebony and sterling steel truss rod cover. Randy’s original guitar was built in 1980 by Tim Wilson and Mike Shannon. Mike Shannon is still with Jackson today and he’ll personally build the extremely limited run of 60 guitars.

One of the most noticeable “customizations” that Randy did to his guitar is the black tape all over the back. We were puzzled by that and had to ask, and we were told that when Randy was on tour with Ozzy during the Diary of a Madman Tour, Sharon Osbourne insisted that no one be visible on stage until the lights came up. So, Randy covered the back of the guitar with non-reflective tape (he did this to his black guitar also) and would flip it up so the white was not visible until the lights came on. Of course, the Tribute Model replicates the tape.

Randy was one of the most influential rock guitar players in history, and this is the defining Randy guitar. The Music Zoo will be a dealer of the Tribute model, so please let us know if you have any questions. The guitar comes in a stenciled Anvil case, and the whole project has the Rhoads family blessing. The price? Retail pricing is based on Randy’s birthday, which is December 6, 1956. Retail is set at $12,619.56.

Charvel Jackson had no rights to the white one.. now with doing this "tribute limited edition" it can be made in China and the world will now proliferate with overpriced Asian concordes.

First in the 80s there were like only 4 really accurate ones ever made for Strings n Things in Texas which had the correct toggle on the side. Then when Akai bought Jackson, they made a limited run of about 20 inaccurate ones in the early 90s with the wrong head, and wrong logo, goofed body, bevels and pinstripes all WRONG.

All done without license.

I think the Rhoads siblings got all weepy-eyed over remembering Randy that they failed to foresee FMIC making several hundred-thousand dollars in offshore-made pieces, now that FMIC got the offical approval.

I recall meeting Delores in 1983, holding the original Concorde.. it was pretty fucking heavy. I believe the body was solid maple, so when the second one was done they tried poplar glueon wings to a maple neckthru rail.. the "black" one, #2 which became "the" Jackson V.

Grover initially had Delores' blessing to start production of the RR guitars, but if she knew she could have licensed the Concorde to Gibson or ANYBODY in todays market with the associated recognition that guitar now has, and what has become of the other RR and what kind of company bought Jackson she would and should reconsider.

There are some good craftsmen in Turkey. Many of them got their training in Germany and can machine and build things to Germany quality levels. I lived in Stuttgart working for my cousins company that rebuilds airplane engines and does restoration work on old airplanes. Most the machinists were from Turkey. They did some work on the BF 109 Black 6 when I was there. One of the few original still flying until it got ground looped.
