BRIGHTON, Colo.
An Adopt-A-Highway sign for the National Socialist Movement
A church along Highway 85 in the northeastern part of the Denver metro area is uncomfortable with the message of group that has just adopted a stretch of their highway.
The National Socialist Movement, who also calls itself America's Nazi Party, applied to participate in the Colorado Department of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway program. "We're here. We're active. We're doing good things," Lochbuie resident Neal Land, a spokesman for the group, told CBS4's Howard Nathan. The white supremacist group will be responsible for picking up trash along a 1 mile stretch of the highway south of Bromley Lane in Brighton. A sign is already up in the area with the group's name on it.
Elmwood Baptist Church is located along that stretch of roadway and has its own section of the highway that's adopted right next to the supremacists. The church community says the racist group's message being so close by is unfortunate. "This is an alarming vision to have two groups working on the same highway that obviously espouse different views," Dr. Gary Randall said. "We have various different races that are included in our membership and in our ministry. We are totally opposed to any kind of idealogy that would be deemed racist."
Land said he's "not much for the Jewish religion" and also said his group has issues with other races and beliefs. He said the group is hoping the sign will draw attention and lead to more people joining them.
Officials said they allowed the National Socialist Movement sign to go up and their permit to go through because their legal advisers informed them they could be in violation of the group's right to free speech if they issued a denial. Despite that, they said they will keep a close eye on them. "We don't want to promote a group that's out there promoting something negative,"Stacey Stegman said. "If there's any incidence of violence then the permit could be revoked."
Land said he and other members of his group will be will be out picking up trash next Saturday starting at 2 p.m. "We're promising we will not initiate any violence. I can't promise what somebody driving down the highway might do," Land said.
Well, what's a little self-promoting racism and hate if it keeps a mile of highway clean? Assholes
