Stone Temple Pilots have finished the recording phase for their unnamed new album, which will be the first release from the San Diego foursome since 2001's Shangri-La Dee Da.

"Fans are going [to] get a great STP record," bassist Robert DeLeo told Spin magazine. "We know what STP sounds like -- we have a sonic blueprint. It's always worked for me to put myself in the ears of the listener. I ask myself, 'What kind of STP record would I want to hear?'"

STP were on a five-year hiatus due to singer Scott Weiland's drug problems, among other things, but reunited in 2008 to start touring together. They then went into the studio to lay down new material.

Now that the recoding is done, the finishing touches are being put on the album in hopes of having it out by May.

Good, good news.

I dig that band, big-fucking time.

Great band.

They're at their best when they don't overthink things - when we get that quirky big-riff rock like the first two records and 'No. 4'. When they try to sound psychadellic like on 'Songs from the Vatican Gift-shop', they lose me...

Same here. Seeing them at the Greek last time they came to LA was one of the top shows of my life, I'd say (but they've kicked ass every time I've seen them). They're one of the FEW bands to matter in the 90s (besides AIC, can't think of another, really), and have managed to remain relevant throughout - not to mention they haven't put out a "meh" release - EVER...

Still remember Weiland's first statement to the crowd after the opening number at that show...apparently the applause wasn't as thunderous as he though it should have been, and he looks at the crowd and says "Wow. You bunch of complacent mother.." and the crowd went ballistic! :D

Yeah...part of the problem is that after their third album, they tended to take prolonged breaks after each successive release (drug problems, rest of the band pissed at Scott, vice-versa).

Not everything on 4 was that great, either, but when they cooked, they cooked.

I really, REALLY must make an effort to catch them live.

Am just glad SW came to his senses and ditched VR. Diddling around with those ex-Gunners was a waste of his talent.

I'd have to go 'Purple', but 'Core' would be a close second.

No fucking way! People compare these guys to PJ and Nirvana all the time, but I can't for the life of me hear any resemblance whatsoever. Pearl Jam and Nirvana should have been so lucky.

You don't think 'Creep' sounds like Nirvana? Especially the bridge?

The melody in 'Plush' is all Vedder-esque.

I think that STP morphed into something much more interesting than either band, but they were certainly indebted to them on the first record...

excellent memories of jammin' to those albums.Hell yeah!

I remember going offroadin' and blaring "Crackerman" to psyche me up to go out there and tear up shit.

Never really dug their albums as a whole, but there's bits and pieces on each one of 'em that I thought were cool.

Good to see they're back together. It spares the world from anymore Velveeta Revolver bullshit.

Exactly, exactly.

Funny and yet sad they got lumped into the "Seattle" thing, especially considering they were from San Diego.
Dave Grohl IMO is waaaaaay more talented than Kurt Cobain. Like the Foos, hated Nirvana for the most part.
Hate Pearl Jam, always did. I kinda like Soundgarden (Cornell's voice is amazing), but really the only bands besides them that got lumped into the "Grunge" thing (deservedly or not), STP and Alice in Chains were the only bands that mattered during the time. Or after.

Betting the new STP disc will be killer... :killer:

There are a few similarities between the 3 groups during the Ten/Nevermind/Core period, but I'd say the differences far outweigh them.

Have always felt Pearl Jam owed and displayed a far greater debt to mainstream 70s and 80s rock than Nrivana or STP did, and frankly PJ have always been more than a bit overrated in my book. Some might say I'm full of shit, but Eddie Vedder's 'angst' (and, in turn, PJ's music) has always come across to me as more than slightly calculated and manufactured.

Nirvana just flamed out too fast after they hit it big. What isn't mentioned often is that the band had essentially broken up in the weeks preceding Cobain's death. Cobain is reported to have said he took that Nirvana style and format as far as it could and should have been taken by the time In Utero came out. That's why he expressed such a strong desire to work with Stipe from REM - he wanted to go in a different direction.

STP, to me, are more varied than either of those bands. More versatile.

If you don't think the part in 'Creep' which begins "I'm half the man I used to be..." sounds like Nirvana you need your ears checking!

Pearl Jam have been largely shit since 1994.

That's funny. I was just thinking "Bin's usually got great ears, but they must've been broken when he said that."

Pearl Jam has ALWAYS been shit. How a killer band like Mother Love Bone evolved into that crap after the loss of Andrew Wood is beyond me.

Well, I thought that 'Ten' and 'Vs' were great records, and 'Vitology' had some really inventive stuff on it. My problem with Pearl Jam is their unwillingness to embrace their success - they became increasingly quirky, but it was contrived, almost as if they were proving that they could make un-hooky music.

Mother Love Bone WERE immense though.

:baaa: I have to agree. Sorry, Bin.

Y'know why "Creep" doesn't sound like Nirvana? Because Cobain couldn't have pulled of that (moderately) complex, hugely melodic chord progression if his life depended on it, let's be real! :D

My ex-wife was a huge PJ fan. Could never get into them. She'd buy each album the day it came out and played it loud at least 3 times in a row...:barf:
I could honestly say there was about 2 songs per album that were tolerable.

I think they embraced their success enormously. Vedder used to downplay the whole thing, but sure as fuck you'd see him inducting someone into something, or speaking up on various pedestals about whatever or turning up at anything that would get his mug or words in print... Yeah, shunning the spotlight.. pfft...
Thanks to those dipshits you couldn't buy a flannel shirt for under 40 bucks. Christ, I've worn flannel shirts forever before these guys jumped on the Neil Young bandwagon.

Musically? I think they were very average. Can't think of one single song of theirs that inspired me to learn from or move me to create something musical.

Now STP? The DeLeo bros. are fookin brilliant and creative songwriters.
Very inspiring... I hope they have a great run this time around!

Playing along to "Interstate Love Song" on the radio one day, I discovered what a sly, clever and gifted writer Robert DeLeo is. If you really want to discover something very cool, play the main riff of that tune at a slightly accelerated tempo on a bass or the lower strings of your guitar. You'll find that the piece is in reality a bit from a popular funk tune of the seventies. Seriously, you'll be astounded by how neat it works.

GREAT band. I wish Andrew Wood had lived , then we wouldn't have had to put up with PJ, The Smashing Blumpkins, Hole and the likes on the level they got to.

DLR and Freddie were his heros... R.I.P. Andy....

YEAH BUDDY! I was at that one... The band Live just gave the performance of the lifetimes... waiting in a sea of 40,000 mud people... just dropped some E in the beer garden... . 4:30 PM... me and Lore (RIP) smokin' and then that crazy synth riff going off HUGE through that massive sound system... then the Les Paul and the drums kick in...

That hit like a freight train! That shit is burned into my soul. Probably the best show and crowd I've ever seen.

Contrast that to the last time I went to see STP in Tampa a year or two ago... 10 feet from center stage... and the lazy assholes didn't show up. :fufu:

I would like to point out that Eddie Veddar does a dead on impression of the Hamburglar from the old McDonald's commercials.......pretty much on every song. I think he writes it that way on purpose so that if he forgets a line live you can't tell.

The thing that's great about STP is they can play and they don't make the same album every time.

This is one of my favorite tunes by STP, from Shangri-La Dee Da. These guys really could pull of just about anything they set their minds to, in this case a very seventies sounding tune.

The Stone Temple Pilots are to release their new, as yet untitled album in June.

The record, their sixth, will be out on June 1, just before Scott Weiland and the band play at the Download Festival over here. It was actually previewed at a private listening party in New York earlier this week, where the reaction was said to have been very positive.

The full track listing is:

1. Between The Lines
2. Take A Load Off
3. Huckleberry Crumble
4. Hickory Dichotomy
5. Dare If You Dare
6. Cinnamon
7. Hazydaze
8. Bag Man
9. Pea Coat
10. Fast As I Can
11. First Kiss On Mars
12. Maver

BLABBERMOUTH.NET - SCOTT WEILAND's Milwaukee 'Disaster' (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=137520)
SCOTT WEILAND's Milwaukee 'Disaster' - Mar. 27, 2010
According to several eyewitness accounts from fans who attended STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' Milwaukee, Wisconsin concert last night (Friday, March 26) at the Eagles Ballroom, vocalist Scott Weiland forgot the words to at least a couple of the songs and seemed to be completely lost during "Dead and Bloated", forcing his bandmates to leave the stage in apparent embarrassment and disgust.

Writing on the long-running STONE TEMPLE PILOTS fan site Below Empty, a fan who goes by the name "ejsme" stated about last night's show, "Although [Scott] sounded really slurry and rambling when talking between songs, he actually did a great job for most of the show. It was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. And the DeLeos [brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo] didn't seem mad at him or anything. Dean actually came up and played his guitar with the neck stuck between Weiland's legs at one point.

"But... once they got to 'Dead and Bloated', partway in, Scott got completely lost and just seemed to forget the whole song, lyrics and melody. They tried to kind of go into a little jammy part to cover until they could get their bearings, but it just kind got more and more off track and Scott never seemed to be able to pick back up. So, Dean walks off to the side and switches guitars and they go into 'Lounge Fly'. Dean walked up to Scott and took out his ear monitor and said something into his ear.

"I thought, 'Oh maybe it's all just a technical issue with Scott's monitor and he's not wasted.' Scott seemed to start off okay, a little bit off, but then by the time they got to the acoustic section, he was behind the beat and sounded like a sloppy drunk guy singing at a wedding. The band kept trying to kind of pause and try to follow Scott or give him a chance to find the right part, but he just seemed to keep changing to different parts of the song. I saw Robert look at Dean and shake his head, as if to say, 'This isn't going to be salvagable' and then, finally, the Deleos took off their instruments and walked to the side of the stage.

"[Eric] Kretz kept drumming and Weiland seemed oblivious to the fact that there was no more guitar and bass. He keep kind of improvising on the melody and singing until Kretz played an ending-of-the-song kind of drum thing to try to signal to Scott to wrap it up, but he kept singing a bit after that. ThenKretz got up and walked right past Scott without looking at him or touching him, and off the stage on the same side that the DeLeos went. Scott finally then walked off stage on the other side.

"The lights went down and I really didn't think that they'd even try to do an encore. A little while later, Weiland walks back onstage and starts to introduce 'Piece of Pie'. The rest of the band comes on and Dean stops and says something in Scott's ear and then Scott drunkingly mumbles something like, 'No piece of pie for yooooou. This is 'Trippin''.' Then they go into 'Trippin'' and Scott seems to just barely be able to keep up with the song and seems to fall behind a bit.

"I thought it was odd though, that during these songs where everything was going wrong, Scott almost seemed oblivious to the fact that he was messing up. It's like he kept right on dancing and posing and singing like he thought he was doing great. He never looked embarrassed or frustrated. You'd think he would've tried to play it off by saying, 'Oops, I messed that up' or somehow acknowledge that the song got screwed up. He even said something, I think it was right before 'Dead And Bloated', about 'You might just be the best audience ever.' And Dean said something about 'Do you wanna play the Rave with us?'

"Anyway, after 'Trippin'' the band starts to walk to the front of the stage to say their goodbyes and bow and everything. Dean is the first to get up front and I distinctly saw him mouth 'Sorry' to the audience and kind of wave. Then Weiland gets up front followed by Kretz and Robert and I was actually suprised that they all stood so close to Scott after all of this. But again, Weiland, seemed oblivious to the disaster. He's up there, head high like he just rocked the place, patting his hand over his heart, kind of like 'You guys are so great, I'm touched' and then does this dramatic salute."

You can hear the entire "Between The Lines" tune at this link (http://rockitoutblog.com/2010/03/21/listen-stone-temple-pilots-between-the-lines/). It really sounds pretty cool, a stripped down song with a typical Jimmy Page-inspired Dean De Leo guitar solo. I am soooo much looking forward to this album's release. :band:

It really is amazing that Weiland has managed to stay alive this long.

STP is truly a revolutionary band in many ways...

I remember in college, arguing with this hot, hippie chick...her calling them sell-outs because they "stole their sound" from Seattle. There was always more to them...

I am looking forward to this album...as much as any in recent memory...

But hope it's the start of something, and doesn't turn into a eulogy of sorts...

I saw 'em Saturday night in Chicago. General admission...so we were in front fucking row, the band literally right in front of my naked, steaming eyes.

Unlike their previous night's fuck up in Milwaukee, they played perfectly. And four new songs...which all rocked (I love the new single) and they dug out HOLLYWOOD BITCH, one of their most under-rated rock songs.

Literally one of the most awesome shows I've ever seen. I'm psyched for the new album.

ALSO...the gig was filmed by VH-1. Cameras all over the place. So, I might be on T.V. Better not advertise who I am in the video because I don't want my fucking mug on this site. The get-along gang probably still cruises.

I've always liked the more artsy side of the band, like some of the stuff from Tiny Music... or "Hello, It's Late" from Shangrila Dee Dah (the chorus of which the band reuses here on the bonus track "Samba Nova"). Weiland attempts to change his voice on almost every track with terrific results, and his David Bowie impression on "First Kiss On Mars" is not only uncanny, it's a highlight of the album. The guys sounds more involved and inspired here than he did on either of those Velvet Re-Volvo discs.

What does bug me is how derivative these guys insist on being at times. Why they have to use that annoying Zeppelin "Dancing Days" riff on every album is beyond me, this time twice (on "Take A Load Off" and again with Hickory Dichotomy"). The retro feel is also evident on "Huckleberry Crumble", which in attack sounds a little too close to Aerosmith's "Same Old Song And Dance" if listened to on an AM radio with failing batteries.

But those are minor quibbles, as the album is quite strong otherwise and rewards repeated listening.

I never understood why so many people (even some people on this site who I usually agree with in terms of music and 'good' bands) were near-raving about Velvet Revolver and how great they were. Bought both albums, gave both a solid, fair listen and there wasn't anything on either of them that was exceptional to me. Like, even Scott's disjointed solo album 12 Bar Blues sounded a bit more accomplished to me than what VR was coming up with.

People were raving about the band before even a note was heard just based on how the lineup looked on paper, and I'm wondering why. I mean, outside of SW most of the rest of the band were a bunch of washed up ex-GnR members. They didn't suck, but I think a lot of the hooplah had to do with when they were formed and put out their music, which was basically at a time (much like today) when mainstream, straight-up rock and roll was dead in terms of creative, contemporary acts.

Funny, I was thinking the Revolver albums are WAY better than the last couple STP disc's. Way better music. The STP music is all the same on the last three disc's. Tiny Music was a good change of pace for them but they should have went back to what they do best. ROCK !!! Still like them though. The only washed up Gun's member is Axhole !!! and Steven.

the DeLeos realize it's more about emotion and not just loud notes, which is why you feel their stuff more.
That way they have a better chance of going over when they take chances instead of relying on cookie cutter formulaic writing.

VR could never write a Long Way Home or You Can't Drive Me Away.
