I know I've done these type of threads in the past. However, I cannot remember if I did it at Rothchats or here? Regardless, I know I did one a cupla years back. Maybe jhale remembers?

Anyway, there's a new version of Microsoft Windows every other week, so how about a new wishlist or your dream axes, gear, etc?

Sound good?

I'll start and I know it seems both dumb and cliché but if I had an extra twenty g's laying around, I'd buy this in a fucking New York minute!!!

Frankie replica (http://www.evhgear.com/frankenstein/#Home)

I know places that make decent replicas at an extremely cheaper price but fuck it, I want the real McCoy!!!

Here's another which I'm still kicking my own ass for not buying!!! I've always wanted a surf green strat and this one had a matching headstock. Eventually, I might just have to build one. The one pictured, I saved the pics and was on eBay for 800 bucks about three years ago. Unfortunately, I thought too long and someone else bought it at the "buy it now" price. FUCK!!!

And as long as I'm talking LP's, I also want a goltop. Just like this w/o the pickguard and I'd remove the pickup covers as well. With some wear and tear on it cos I like 'em like that.

Reminds me of that line from some movie or tv show where a guy says "Here's a photo of my wife and kids..." and the second guy looks at it, winces and says "Nice frame."

And I'd still like one of those goofy Kramer Gene Simmons AXE basses, even if it is a bitch to play sitting down.

I'd like to have one of these too. They also made a guitar version of this when these came out in the early '80s. Love to have one of those.

My producer buddy also did some bass tracks on Bruce Kulick's new CD, Gene made a guest vocal appearance, and brought in the Axe bass for my friend to use (he goes way back with them, long story)...but he basically verified what you said - it plays well, just not sitting down... ;)

I've adored that guitar since Dave Edmonds played an earlier model (a '58 ES 335) when he was in Rockpile with Nick Lowe in the late seventies. An absolutely beautiful instrument.

Well, just for kicks a white Gibson Flying V '68, with an ebony fingerboard, skull and crossbone inlays, chrome hardware, EMG 85 In the Bridge Position, One Volume Knob.

A Marshall JCM800 Stack (though where in my house I would have the room to store it is beyond me).

I would love to own a Hendrix strat, but, seeing as how they are VERY limited in number and they sell for what, $50,000 and up these days, odds are I will never own one in this lifetime or the next.

If I could I would wish that Garfuckle would go away, but that, like the Hendrix Strat, is likened unto impossibility.

I've been wanting something with P-90's, I have a thing for semi-hollow bodies, and I don't have a Tele. And I don't mind working on it myself if it needs to be set up. For $179, what the hell?? It could be good to take out and knock around, if nothing else.

Looks interesting. Might be cool with a Musikraft or Warmoth neck, and a hardware/pickup(if they need it; at that price, probably) swap-out...not like a finished body alone wouldn't set ya back at least $179, y'know?

Blackflag
04-16-2010, 04:33 PM
Totally what I was thinking. And the pickups are supposed to be good P-90's. So even with a new neck, it could be worth it. But the neck is 1-pc maple, with a 12" radius. I bet I could work it over and get it in shape.

It comes in Fiesta Red, which is one of my favorite colors...

I would not mind having a road case for my JMP Marshall halfstack. All I have right now is a wood case for the head that was built for a friend of mine by his Dad. It is actually more like a piece of furniture than a road case, but what the hell.

So add that to my 'wish list'. Road cases.

Yes, you should definitely get a road case for your JMP.
I got the case for my MESA-BOOGIE :hee: from these guys...

http://stores.ebay.com/The-Safe-Case

I was originally going to get one from Brady Cases http://www.bradycases.com/product.asp?pid=2
Mostly because I wanted one in a custom color, but decided to go with black, and Safe Case already made a standard model for the small-chassis MK series...

It's slightly smaller than the case it was in back in the day when I had it in the rack-mount adapter. Will work great for this or any other fly-out gig I do in the future, but it's better to have a case to even be schlepping it around for local gigs in the back of the car than not...

This Pedal Train sponsored- site is kinda cool if you're building a pedal board...be it on one of their boards or otherwise.

http://pedalboardplanner.com/

I was able to do a mock-up of my current board (sans Pedal Power II and channel switchers) fairly quickly...

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h217/jhale667/Guitar%20shite/pedalboardmockup.jpg

It by default tries to route it like a conventional in-line board's "signal chain" by the order you select the effects (not sure if there's a way around that yet)...so the arrows are completely out-of-whack with how I'm really running it...but anyway, cool, useful tool! :baaa:

THEN you start thinking, "What if I got that MXR Super Comp and Carbon Copy Delay, and added an Expression pedal for the MM-4..."

My last show my head mysteriously turned off and wouldn’t turn back on. So the sound guy plugged me in through a direct box and several people told me it sounded way better that way. Of course I have no way of knowing on stage, but it did sound better through the monitors. My head did work at our next practice.

I was going to start a thread about this, but I’ll just ask it here. What are the pros and cons of going direct? Should I use a direct box all the time? What do you think?

Most pro bass players and soundmen I've encountered use a combination of the amp and a direct signal for larger venues; I'm even talking bigger clubs...IMO (and experience) if you're going to be using a PA and not just the amps for room volume w/the vocals...for the bass a mix of both is preferable...(plus you're usually guaranteed a halfway decent sound regardless of the amp you're using).

There's a direct-output from most amps, also called line out sometimes.. then there's the boxes that can insert between signal chain and amp input that solely tap off a line output to drive other inputs like a board, effect or even other amps.

GSG, in my experience, more sound guys seem to want the pure signal before it gets colored by the amp, though you could use a direct/line out on an amp too.

I just checked my owner’s manual and there’s no “line out” on the back of my amp. I was hoping that I had one so I didn’t have to spend $189 on a new SansAmp. :(

GSG, in my experience, more sound guys seem to want the pure signal before it gets colored by the amp, though you could use a direct/line out on an amp too.

When my head turned off that night the sound guy told me he prefers to go direct so he can be in control, and he has a great reputation around here. He told me that most people turn their knobs all the way to 10 and they wonder why they have a shitty tone. Well, I’m not that bad, but I’ll admit that I know very little about how to get the most out of my head. Hell, I can switch my frequency knob back and forth and I can’t tell the difference at all! :0

Most good ones split the signal so you can go to the amp AND the board..

We played on Saturday and I went direct for the first time and it sounded pretty damn good. Doing both like you’re suggesting sounds like a plan. I’ll ask to do that next time and we’ll see how it goes. Thanks! :beers8:

 Said the troll posting from the internet cafe because the library's closed. :fufu:

Uh, the idea is to find out "at what capacity" they work, dumbass! Ideally in a Custom wind it'll tighten up the bass - vs. the A2 in a CC, and tame the highs vs a Ceramic. As for gaussmeters and polarity testers and all the other fun stuff I'll need to get into magnet swapping (and eventually hybrid pickup making), the Stew Mac order and Radio Shack visit are on the schedule, the magnet deal (from a supplier a lot of the Duncan freaks buy from and install w/o issue, btw) just dropped into my lap sooner than expected. Compared to other humbucker magnets (and Trembuckers) I have folating around? Yeah, they'll fit.

And FFS, GARfail what's the worst thing that could happen, I don't like it, forcing me to put the old magnet back in the pickup, restoring it to its original configuration? Duh...

Actually this vacation (once again) involves my vocation - something you wish you could say...
It also involves a gig for a diabetes charity. Y'know, a gig, playing guitar...something you also admittedly don't do. So STFU.

As unpracticed as I am I could still play you under the table.

Having said that, and having wound many pickups and spent hundreds of hours fucking with coils, magnets, plates, screws and slugs to figure which factor affects sound and how to tweak it you may be lead to believe my current configuration is a really really fussed over configuration?

It's not. SH1N in the neck, and a Tom Holmes-era Gibson PAF reissue 1981 in the bridge. Same setup I've had since about 1984. Why fuck with what worked really well all these years..

Having said that Jay, in all honesty, I wish I'd just focused on playing guitar more than playing with the guts. Cuz when you're old and you realize you could have had a larger back-catalogue if you'd been more focused, the thought moves you into regrets and thats no way to be if you have time and capacity to do things differently.

Magnets should be on nobody's "dream gear list" while living in that hovel where you stay.

Yes, GAyR - I'm spending a little of what would have been vacation fun-money to play with my gear at a charity gig I was invited to do. I could spend it on boozing with friends I haven't seen in years - gonna be there anyway, but figured spending it on a worthy cause - to do the gig right, instead of just play through whatevs again - might be cool too. Plus now my old friends get to hear my rig (cabs provided by the sound company) and the event is BYOB anyway... :hee: I mean, who wouldn't - besides GARfail ?

Then the MXR Carbon Copy and an Expression pedal for the MM-4 as planned...but also thinking about adding a volume pedal in the loop to act as a foot-controlled Master Volume...

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h217/jhale667/Guitar%20shite/Pedalboardrevisionstreamlined.jpg

Will be like 1 1/2 times the current size, but even more versatile...I can live with that...and still check it on an airline...lol Current version only weighs 26 lbs, I can't see adding a couple of pedals and inches to the case size bumping it up by more than 10-15 lbs?

You still have to wonder about the heat of the pedals unseating the glue from the plastic strip, even if it is a super-glue like adhesive. There is another option, but it takes some work. This works best on a homemade, metal frame.

Essentially, you remove the backing plate from each individual pedal, then drill a hole the diameter of a 2 inch bolt and insert the bolt through the hole. (You can use some super-glue or JB Weld to hold it in place.) Reattach the plate to the pedal. On your metal board, position where you want the pedal to be, then drill a hole the same diameter. Place a few rubber washers on the bolt to keep things tight, then slide it through the hole. To fasten in place, use a wing-nut with a washer.

There you have it, no glue yet absolutely zero slippage. And you can still access the pedals for battery or other maintenance by simply turning the wing-nut. :baaa:

Does sound like some work...lol ;) In my case won't need battery access once applied; I'm running a Voodoolab Pedal Power II for everything - interestingly the Pedaltrain board (also metal frame construction) has an underside bracket that will hold it among other power supplies w/o modification. Kinda cool. The pedalboard planner design is based off the 32x16 model which I was considering anyway...may give it (and the PowerGrip tape) a shot rather than having something custom made...or bolting things down...

Thinkin' this one...

Final revision will look something like this...

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h217/jhale667/Guitar%20shite/pedalboardreperfected.jpg

The more I'm reading up on the new MXR compressors, think I like the Custom Comp better...

Think it will hold two pedal power units...which would mean I could throw in a BBE Sonic Stomp and a Hush Pedal in the loop too, not like it really needs it, but hey... ;)

I upgraded for free: ditched my SKB15 and found an SKB25 so I can mount the tascam recorder on it, added a tuner, and my wireless receiver.

Basically the same thing I had but a little larger.. zippered plastic board.

The reason I didn't like the Pedaltrain was it's weight, and that you can't throw it in the overhead.

jhale667
07-15-2010, 03:01 AM
My guitar goes in the overhead; the pedalboard goes as a checked bag. Plus I'd like something a little more sturdy than a zippered plastic board.

GAR
07-15-2010, 03:05 AM
You could check the SKB if you had to, but I would prefer to reinforce the top portion with a foam-n-aluminum sheet or plate to protect the knobs.

Pedaltrain is perfect for checked baggage, but it doesn't have corner wheels and an extendo-grip like other luggage. That's all it really needs, so you could dolly the sumbitch thru lobbies.

Especially Houston, that lobby is a bitch.

Nah, even if you slipped carboard on top, I think it would be fine.

I've throw these around abit now. Two layers of webbed padded nylon, and a pouch between and haven't sheared or kinked a pot shaft yet.

Plus they're very light. At guitar center pasadena last weekend, I saw they got an even lighter zippered one like the SKB for fifty bucks.

jhale667
07-15-2010, 11:19 AM
Actually, I toured with someone that used an SKB, and it got ripped to shreds. Literally, as well as every time the stage crew saw it getting set up regardless of what city we were in. They're pretty much toys.

If I blocked mine for dive-only I'd want the brass ones, but may stick with the standards since they're primarily for maintenance. Will be getting more noiseless springs as well.

Thanks. I have little need for such a device, but little need is enough for me. The basement is a bit too tight to be moving around and trying to jam with wires that get caught up under furniture, twist up, get pulled out, or are constantly being attacked by my cat who thinks it's a huge snake and must kill it. I have to talk with my doctor about this since I have a computer in my chest that can deliver a massive shock to my heart when accidentally triggered by certain external influences, but I simply want a high quality wireless unit so I can mess around with the guitar without the headaches associated with wires.

I'll check those cats out, thanks.:hitch:

Hmm...not really sure!
Does the NS-2 have a built-in loop? Not that familiar with it...tried one once as a kid (pre-Boogie) and returned it, seemed like it was killing my signal no matter how minimal the setting...the Noise Clamps seems more dynamic-sensitive just comparing the two from memory.

Correction: Was thinking about it on the way home...that was the old MXR Noise Gate I tried...horrid back in the day...worked TOO well, as in attacked your signal like a rabid pit bull...lol

You would be better IMHO getting something like a Roland JV1010 module and hooking it up to a MIDI keyboard.

Could be half the price for something so much cooler especially for rock.

twonabomber
10-27-2011, 02:49 AM
oh, i got modules. got an Alesis QSR in the spring, and got a SD card reader for my Roland S-760. been playing with the soft synths too, there is a good Oberheim clone out now, and i already have the Native Instruments FM8 soft synth. i also picked up a Roland JX-8P off Ebay with a bad keybed, cheap. plays grate MIDIed up. gonna fix the 'board over the winter, when it's too cold to be outside wrenching on Jeeps.

was gonna use the DX-7 more as a controller, i don't need all the transport controls the USB controllers have. the DX-7 doesn't split the board, but i'm not sure i need that for just banging around here. i think the DX-7II does though. or maybe a D-50, i really like the feel of my S-50 but you gotta load a disk in it to do ANYTHING, the OS is on the disk and not in memory. also no split, but it has aftertouch. i'd like to save the wear and tear on the disk drive, i will probably box that one back up and store it somewhere.

i have an M-Audio Axiom controller but i don't really like the action, will probably flip it on Ebay.

okay, if i bought a 7 it would be just to have one after all these years. i still consider buying a Kurzweil 250, even though i know modern software and 'boards shit all over it.

also thought of a small digital piano, more a "stage" version than a piece of furniture. something i can sit down and noodle on through headphones or small powered monitors, without having to turn on a whole rack of shit.

Seshmeister
10-27-2011, 05:56 AM
Well it would as you say make a good controller.

It's funny how cheap you can get this stuff now. I had a look and you can get them here for less than $450 and they were $2500 when they came out.

I've only dipped my toe into the world of keyboards as they don't really seem to suit the music we're doing at the moment but I found a second hand Korg M1 which I'm using as the controller MIDI'd up and mixed in with the Roland JV1010 which I got on EBay. In total I paid about $250 for this set up which back in the late 80s would have cost close to 20 times that.

twonabomber
10-27-2011, 11:55 AM
when NIN was still touring, supposedly someone from the organization would hit the local trader's papers (pre-intertubes) and buy up any DX-7's they could find. Reznor says they were indestructible. he managed to break some of them anyways.

i've read the M1 has the same keybed that the DX-7 has.

the broken JX cost me $300 but when it was new they were $1700.

Leaving the sealer on the neck itself, probably Duplicolor black for the headstock, and Jeff from RCA has turned me on to the quick-dry clear that he uses, it's available in aerosol form...debated doing a gold Kramer decal on the headstock, but probably won't logo it, none of my other guitars are branded, don't want to start a disturbing trend... :lmao:

Did the wiring and set up on the Kramer, it pretty much smokes. There's a pesky intermittent ground-issue to be dealt with, but overall...oh yeah. As for the Porter pickups, they're nice. The "Classic" (A5) neck model is just bright enough w/o being harsh, and the low-medium output "Clear" (ceramic) bridge pu is an interesting beast...through my Boogie's lead channel, while it's still plenty distorted, it eerily reminds me of EVH's US Festival tone...mean, but almost pristine clean. It REALLY makes you work, but responds really well to pick dynamics. Definitely not as hot as I'm used to, but interesting!

In other news, I just heard the KnE body is getting it's final polishing, and is almost ready to be shipped back to me! :baaa:

I just want a Les Paul. A real one.

A guitarist I used to jam with, Randy was his name, used to play in a band called

BBC out of Detroit/Windsor back in the day. Opened for Aerosmith a couple of times I think.

Anyhoo, he tol me once, when you buy a Les Paul you have to look inside. I can't remember

what it was he said to look for, but he said checking inside was a must to make sure it was the real deal.

A Celestion G12M/H loaded 2x12.

It's a threeway-tie between a Traynor DHX212, a Palmer and a EVH, at the moment...

SARGE and I were discussing Telecasters this afternoon, and coincidentally a patron donated a bunch of Guitar Player back issues from 2011. In the August issue, this item was featured: A Limited Edition Seymour Duncan 35 Telecaster. The thing is a variation of the famous "TeleGib" built for Jeff Beck sometime in the early 1970s. It features an unlikely set of humbuckers, along with a Gibson tailpiece and bridge (how that lines up to the Fender neck, I'm not quite sure. http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-confused-smileys-718.gif (http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/skype-emoticons.html)) I'm also unsure of the tone, combining those pick ups with the rather austere Fender body.
