View Full Version : Tea Party Protests: 'Ni**er,' 'Fa**ot' Shouted At Members Of Congress, Spat On

And the real reasons behind the protests get clearer and clearer....

Tea Party Protests: 'Ni**er,' 'Fa**ot' Shouted At Members Of Congress (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/20/tea-party-protests-nier-f_n_507116.html)

Preceding the president's speech to a gathering of House Democrats, thousands of protesters descended around the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The gathering quickly turned into abusive heckling, as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to epithets and even mild physical abuse.

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a 'ni--er.' And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "fa--ot," as protesters shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president's speech, shrugged off the incident.

But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

"It was absolutely shocking to me," Clyburn said, in response to a question from the Huffington Post. "Last Monday, this past Monday, I stayed home to meet on the campus of Claflin University where fifty years ago as of last Monday... I led the first demonstrations in South Carolina, the sit-ins... And quite frankly I heard some things today I have not heard since that day. I heard people saying things that I have not heard since March 15, 1960 when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus."

"It doesn't make me nervous as all," the congressman said, when asked how the mob-like atmosphere made him feel. "In fact, as I said to one heckler, I am the hardest person in the world to intimidate, so they better go somewhere else."

Asked if he wanted an apology from the group of Republican lawmakers who had addressed the crowd and, in many ways, played on their worst fears of health care legislation, the Democratic Party, and the president, Clyburn replied:

"A lot of us have been saying for a long time that much of this, much of this is not about health care a all. And I think a lot of those people today demonstrated that this is not about health care... it is about trying to extend a basic fundamental right to people who are less powerful."

UPDATE 6:55 PM ET: Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's office released the following statement:

For many of the members of the CBC, like John Lewis and Emanuel Cleaver who worked in the civil rights movement, and for Mr. Frank who has struggled in the cause of equality, this is not the first time they have been spit on during turbulent times.

This afternoon, the Congressman was walking into the Capitol to vote, when one protester spat on him. The Congressman would like to thank the US Capitol Police officer who quickly escorted the others Members and him into the Capitol, and defused the tense situation with professionalism and care. After all the Members were safe, a full report was taken and the matter was handled by the US Capitol Police. The man who spat on the Congressman was arrested, but the Congressman has chosen not to press charges. He has left the matter with the Capitol Police.

This is not the first time the Congressman has been called the "n" word and certainly not the worst assault he has endured in his years fighting for equal rights for all Americans. That being said, he is disappointed that in the 21st century our national discourse has devolved to the point of name calling and spitting. He looks forward to taking a historic vote on health care reform legislation tomorrow, for the residents of the Fifth District of Missouri and for all Americans. He believes deeply that tomorrow's vote is, in fact, a vote for equality and to secure health care as a right for all. Our nation has a history of struggling each time we expand rights. Today's protests are no different, but the Congressman believes this is worth fighting for.

I guess when you're all out of patience, the racial slurs usually come up as the most effective toolbox go-to piece to toss out there whether you're an ignorant dem, repub, or neither-affiliate protester.

That faggot Barney Frank got called "faggot" btw also, but I don't see anyone defending homo hate-crimes here.. and plus, you can't blame an entire mob for the idiotic comments of a few, but leave it to Vabbitch to invocate that fallacy as fact - which it isn't.

The real reason they're screaming out there about this bill is obvious, and has nothing to do with Negrocentrified legislators or queer bankfreindly dick-tators:

- Forced mandated coverage, enforced by the hiring of 16,000 IRS bullies to ding you $3,000 grand if you do NOT buy insurance

- Forced funding for abortion

- Forced funding for illegal alien medical

- Adding two trillions more in deficits toward Federal bankruptcy

- Stealing Medicare broke

- Twisting CBO scores thru double-counted trickery

- Lying about the final cost with the Doctor Fix disincluded

- No single payer / public option

- Lying about cut taxes and deficit redux by way of dinging those people who prefer to buy the best insurance (the socalled "Cadillac Tax")

- Misleading the public for over a year that they had the votes all along.. which if they did, they'd have been working on incentive for small business, corporate export benefits and large currency financial transaction credits to build the economy rather than taking it over

- Violation of the Constitution Article I | LII / Legal Information Institute (http://topics.law.cornell.edu/constitution/articlei)

That's just off the top of my head in three minutes.. if I have to google for more I'll be cutting and pasting forever, which will be so large nobody will read it including myself.

Suffice to say if I had to google one thing, it would be the as-lately, most-oft cited violation of our Constitution you keep hearing about in the news regarding taxes.. forcing you to pay for someone else's gas/food/doctor/entertainment etc. is unfair taxation without representation and is quite enough to piss off a million protesters tomorrow

Section 7.

All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with amendments as on other Bills.
Every bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a law, be presented to the President of the United States; if he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the objections at large on their journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the bill, it shall be sent, together with the objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a law. But in all such cases the votes of both Houses shall be determined by yeas and nays, and the names of the persons voting for and against the bill shall be entered on the journal of each House respectively. If any bill shall not be returned by the President within ten days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the same shall be a law, in like manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their adjournment prevent its return, in which case it shall not be a law.
Every order, resolution, or vote to which the concurrence of the Senate and House of Representatives may be necessary (except on a question of adjournment) shall be presented to the President of the United States; and before the same shall take effect, shall be approved by him, or being disapproved by him, shall be repassed by two thirds of the Senate and House of Representatives, according to the rules and limitations prescribed in the case of a bill.

The BCE and the Rockefellers go back a long way too. Samuel Bush (Nazi Prescott's daddy) was involved with John Rockefeller's railroad scams around the turn of the 20th century, and Great Grandpa Bush used his profits from those scams to make money smuggling Remington rifles over to Europe in the 1910 decade. Some of those rifles ended up being used against us in WWI. Others were used in Russia in 1917.

Yep, treason as always, from the Bush Criminal Empire.

WRONG

TARP was for the Bankers.

Obamacare is for Warren Buffett to back up his cash mobile to the loading docks of the US Treasury.

And the whole time, Obama's yacking about how awful the Insurance Industry is = setup.

Just follow the money, it'll lead you right up to the guys making the biggest insurance policy sales commission in the history of the free world if the Republicans don't gut this thing like a fish and obliterate it in their new majority come November.

How this party can get up in front of the cameras and just boldfaced lie lie lie.. doesnt' that bother you selfproclaimed Democrat diehards a bit?

How about Robert Gibbs' gleeful bit each morning.. this guy is as hilarious as he is dangerously disrespectful.

He's supposed to be spokesman, not spin doctor.

If it was real socialized medicine the insurance industry would not be part of the plan. The US government would foot the bill using tax money as payment. Obamacare basically forces citizens to buy healthcare from the insurance companies or they get fined or even jailed. This isn't socialism, it's fascism and if they pass this piece of shit, I'm not paying a penny to it. Come and get me mother fuckers! The state of Oregon threatened to jail me over taxes and I told them to come and get me mother fuckers and they did nothing. I've already met with both our state senators and if this passes, Wyoming is going to stonewall it in court as will numerous states. I don't care what they pass, if the majority of voting Americans are against it, if they pass it anyways, then they enter the zone of where people rebel against it. The meeting I attended wasn't a tea bagger meeting. Both Democrats and Republicans were there and none wanted the current bill.

Conservatism really means old time values or economic-thinking. I guess for these people, this includes ol' time values of the worst kind from the mid-20th-century and earlier (and not values shared by most decent Americans around at that time).

These people still probably cry over Gettysburg.

True. Hell, it might have happenned from an individual or two, but to label all the protestors there as "racists" is disingenuous, at best.

Everyone needs to take a step back and take a deep breath. The rancor over this bill is getting out of hand. And that's only what we are seeing. Imagine being a fly on the wall in some of these private meetings between Pelosi, Obama, Rahm where they are "persuading" a member to vote yes.

I'm finding it odd that with all the American citizens in DC gathering, holding rallies and protests...none are there to support the bill. Where are those people? And I believe the number of state attorney generals that will file law suits against this bill if it passes now stands at 38.

They say this will fix Medicare fraud but instead as I show from the Doctor Fix fiasco which they say "we'll deal with it later" may only surpass and subsequently triple the current fraud estimates.

So does anyone really give a shit over a couple kooks spitting and name-calling because they're having a ripoff forced upon them?

Gotta love that Bocceri asshole from my chick's district.. he just gave an impassioned pitch as the Dem's closer on a suspend motion today on Cspan. He obviously partook of the Koolaid.

but.......... After the silly debate I got baited into on Friday I can't in good conscience do that tonight. Since I returned home after leaving the military it truly scares me how backwards this area has become. Sometimes I feel like I live in another country. The local newspaper is full of anti-Obama opinions and rarely allows anything good to be printed about any democrat or any opposing point of view. Every time I have to go to the doctor or get my vehicle worked on the TV is always on Fox and around here it is taken as GOSPEL equaled only by the Bible. Even at work, the break room TV is always on Fox. If I bring up a fact or two it can get down right nasty because I don't share their views. I get labeled a liberal and I've even been called anti-American on one occasion. Which I laughed at because I served just short of 10 years in the military and that little dilly came from someone who had never served or been involved in politics and thought Dick Cheney was the most courageous man to ever hold public office. See where I'm going? I'm no democrat. I don't believe either party has our best interest in mind and until we have a legit third or fourth party to take the corruption on we deserve everything we get for allowing it to continue. I'm a registered independent fyi. Now, that little debate was about Fox being "fair and balanced" I can't believe I let myself get baited into it but sometimes I just can't let obvious lies be told without providing a counterpoint. Most of the time I keep quiet at work unless someone makes some outrageous claim that I can't let go. Sure enough, that comment was about the interview Obama did with Fox last week and how no other news channel would have held his feet to the fire etc. I'm no Obama lover but even I saw the disdain they showed him. Can you imagine how they would have reacted if some other station treated Bush that way? Anyways, he went on to say that shows they are the only "fair and balanced" network and what they say is the truth so of course I couldn't let that go...........................I digress.:pullinghair:

I think people who make an issue of Barrack Obama being half black are assholes. What race his parents were have nothing to do with liking his policies or not. If you don't like what he's promoting then criticize the issue, not the heritage of where the person comes from. I can see people being very angry because of the economic situation and how the government doesn't care about the people, only the corporate elite. But then this is history. When an economy goes, people start looking for someone to blame it on.

Rep Ciro Rodriguez Called “Wetback” By Anti-Reform Protestor

Looks like black and gay lawmakers aren’t the only ones being pelted with vicious slurs by folks who oppose the health reform proposal. Add a Hispanic lawmaker to the list. Trifecta!

Rep Ciro Rodriguez of Texas has confided to colleages that he was hammered by ethnic slurs by people opposed to reform passing, one of those colleagues tells me.

Rep Marcy Kaptur told me in the hallway today that Rodriguez privately told her he’d been called “some names” back in his district. She confirmed that they were ethnic slurs, but declined to elaborate.

Separately, Kaptur said that Rep Phil Hare of Illinois had told her that someone had grabbed his jacket today, which suggests a threat of violence.

This comes after we learned that protestors screamed the “N” word at John Lewis and the “F” word at Barney Frank. Emanuel Cleaver was even spat at. Now add Rodriguez to the list.

Now look, admittedly, politics is a rough business. It’s not for the squeamish. But this stuff is way beyond the pale, and deserves serious condemnation from senior lawmakers in both parties.

I’ve checked in with Rodriguez’s and Hare’s offices for more detail, and will keep you posted if I hear back.

**********************************

Update: Rodriguez’s spokesperson, Rebeca Chapa, gets in touch to say that he was slammed as a “wetback” by an anti-reform protestor at a town meeting this week.

And another opponent called Rodriguez’ home and told the family member who answered to “go back to Mexico.”

Police On Cantor Incident: 'We're Calling It Random Gunfire' (VIDEO)
Justin Elliott | March 26, 2010, 9:51AM

In an interview with TPM, a Richmond Police Department spokesman said the bullet that penetrated a window in a building that includes a campaign office of Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) was "an act of random gunfire."

"What we were describing yesterday in fact describes an act of random gunfire," said Public Information Manager Gene Lepley.

Cantor held a nationally televised press conference yesterday in which he said, "Just recently, I have been directly threatened. A bullet was shot through the window of my campaign office in Richmond this week." He said he has been targeted not only because he is a member of Congress, but also because he is Jewish.

But a police statement on the incident, which occurred early Tuesday morning, suggested that someone had fired a bullet up into the air and it went through the window of the building on the way back down. While it went through a window, it did not penetrate the blinds, according to the police.

A Cantor spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment.

In his press conference yesterday -- held amid multiple reports of threats and acts of vandalism against Democrats nationwide -- Cantor accused Dems of "dangerously fanning the flames by suggesting that these incidents be used as a political weapon." Here's the video of the conference:

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_cj8ddlDhuY&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_cj8ddlDhuY&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

"Any suggestion that a leader in this body would incite threats or acts against other members is akin to saying that I would endanger myself, my wife, or my children. Just recently I have been directly threatened. A bullet was shot through the window of my campaign office in Richmond this week, and I have recieved threatening emails," Cantor said.

He declined to take questions after the press conference.

The story apparently first broke as an "exclusive" on the Web site of Fox News. The Fox piece began this way:

FOX has learned that the Richmond, VA campaign office of House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) was shot at Monday.

Cantor, is the highest-elected Jewish official in the country and the only Jewish Republican in the House.

Here's a screngrab from the network's coverage of the incident yesterday:

Road rage, accident centers on Obama bumper sticker

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Nashville man says he and his 10-year-old daughter were victims of road rage Thursday afternoon, all because of a political bumper sticker on his car.

Mark Duren told News 2 the incident happened around 4:30p.m., while he was driving on Blair Boulevard, not far from Belmont University.

He said Harry Weisiger gave him the bird and rammed into his vehicle, after noticing an Obama-Biden sticker on his car bumper.

Duren had just picked up his 10-year-old daughter from school and had her in the car with him.

"He pointed at the back of my car," Duren said, "the bumper, flipped me off, one finger salute."

But it didn't end there.

Duren told News 2 that Weisiger honked his horn at him for awhile, as Duren stopped at a stop sign.

Once he started driving again, down Blair Boulevard, towards his home, he said, "I looked in the rear view mirror again, and this same SUV was speeding, flying up behind me, bumped me."

Duren said he applied his brake and the SUV smashed into the back of his car.

He then put his car in park to take care of the accident, but Weisiger started pushing the car using his SUV.

Duren said, "He pushed my car up towards the sidewalk, almost onto the sidewalk."

Police say Harry Weisiger is charged with felony reckless endangerment in the incident.

Rep. Harry Mitchell, D-Ariz. receives death threats: "I wish a panty bomber would come in and just f*&king blow your place up."
By John Amato

The threat of violence is continuing in our country and will continue until we see it come to fruition more and more. Rep Harry Mitchell-(D)from Arizona is the latest member of Congress to witness the insanity. via Andrea Mitchell:

Caller: You are going to have to look over your f*&king shoulder because people in your district hate your f*&king face. I love my insurance company and to have you come between me and my f*&king doctor. I cannot tell you how much I wish a panty bomber would come in and just f*&king blow your place up.

A recorded message to his office from a woman who said she hates his f*&king face and hopes a bomb will blow his office up. Nice.

U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell, D-Ariz., has received death threats over his vote in favor of federal health care reforms.

“Congressman Mitchell’s life was threatened both prior to and following the vote,” said press secretary Adam Bozzi.

Bozzi said Mitchell also received calls at his Tempe home and someone left a note about health care with coal and dog feces at his congressional office in suburban Phoenix.

One caller said she was so filled with rage that the Congressman should ‘watch his back’ and called for a bomber to blow up his Scottsdale office, Bozzi said. "His wife has been harassed at their Tempe home, and his son – a Tempe city councilman – also received menacing calls, as well," Bozzi said.

Just wait until the summer strolls along. And the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19th, is right around the corner. Law enforcement is not looking forward to the day that Timothy McVeigh launched his terrorist attack on US soil.

You and your ilk at the DU (yeah, I read their silly-assed comments) are certainly reaching for straws on this one.

Whether it was delibrate or "an act of random gunfire" is in question and most likely will not be determined.

However, the fact of the matter is that GOP representatives and Senators have been receiving threats also. That much is undeniable.

Man arrested for Cantor death threat

Federal authorities have arrested a Philadelphia man and charged him with threatening to kill House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and his family.

Norman Leboon will be charged with two federal counts: threatening to kill Cantor and interfere with his federal duties and posting video online containing such threats. He is scheduled to appear in federal district court in Philadelphia Monday afternoon.

The arrest is the most serious in a string of threats of violence against lawmakers in wake of the divisive health care vote. At least 10 Democrats, along with a handful of Republicans, including Cantor, reported threats of violence over the past week.

“At this time, the congressman will have no further comment on this threat or the investigation and asks that inquiries be directed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” said Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring. “The congressman is deeply grateful for, and would like to dearly thank all local and federal law enforcement involved, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Attorney’s Office in Virginia and Philadelphia, U.S. Capitol Police and the Henrico Police Department in Virginia.”

In a video posted on YouTube, Leboon said Cantor was a "liar, you're a Lucifer, you're a pig, a greedy [expletive] pig." He referred to a bullet found in Cantor’s office last week and said it will be placed in his head.

Leboon faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of both charges.

According to an FBI affidavit, the investigation moved swiftly. On March 26, the FBI’s San Francisco office got a copy of a YouTube video in which Leboon allegedly made threats to kill Cantor and his “cupcake evil wife.”

The video makes reference to Cantor’s Judaism and a bullet that was fired into his Richmond, Va., office.

“Remember Eric ... our judgment time, the final Yom Kippur has been given,” according to a transcript of the video in the affidavit. “You are a liar, you’re a Lucifer, you’re a pig, a greedy [expletive] pig, you’re an abomination, you receive my bullets in your office, remember they will be placed in your heads. You and your children are Lucifer’s abomination.”

Google, the owner of YouTube, provided the FBI with the IP address of the person who submitted the video and found it to be in downtown Philadelphia.

Police had a warrant to arrest Leboon on separate charges of threats with intent to terrorize another, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Leboon was arrested March 27 and told the FBI that he used his cell phone video camera to make the video. He also admitted, according to the affidavit, that he had made more than 2,000 threatening videos.

He told the FBI that he is the “son of the god of Enoch” and further said Cantor is “pure evil” and will die.

That's weird. I have never thought of Florida as "the South". I think Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee...but not Florida. Makes sense now that I see it on a map. I always pictured it more like a So CA just with Cubans instead of Mexicans and a lot more old people.

I guess I wasn't paying attention to all those episodes of COPS.

Northern Florida is about as "confederate" South as it gets, especially the panhandle area. Southern Florida has all the gays, Cuban Exiles and elderly Jews to balance it out.

It's the truth, too.
Rebel flags are on just about everything, except MY car, lol.
A lot of people here are oozing with southern hospitality, but there are the ignorant rednecks to contend with as well.
I'm surrounded by staunch republican drones and I keep getting letters from the voter registration folks about choosing a party.
I registered as an Indpendant, and i had to tell the bitch several times that I wasn't associated with either major party which she didn't seem to like very much.

But I like my guns, I like to fish, I like to make lots of money, and I like hanging out on the beach looking at all the babes wearin' nuthin'...It beats the hell out of Ohio and it's rapidly dying economy.

Yeah, it's pretty much the only place on the planet that you have to go north to head south. A morally bankrupt metropolis governed by people that still use rotary telephones and have yet to discover indoor plumbing.

Consider the opposite. If one less had melted, then you could drive to Cuba. As a result, Castro might have signed with the Yankees, the revolution never would have happened and Disney World would be there instead.

I dunno, man. Both Smith and Lennon seemed to use the word as nothing more than shock value to propel whatever context they might have felt they were representing. OK, you could say that it comes from the Lenny Bruce school of lessening a word's impact by repeating it, but I've never bought that argument, particularly when the word "shit" was used 162 times by Trey Parker and Matt Stone in an episode of South Park to (supposedly) prove a similar point. If anything, you get the impression that people are not trying to illuminate a larger point, but are in fact behaving like children showing off by cursing in front of their parent's friends visiting for dinner.

I'm not denying these people are/were talented, but when you review the when, where and how this material came about, you can pretty much arrive at the same conclusion. Lennon was at his artistic nadir, living in a New York art ghetto at a time he merely reacted to events instead of inspiring them. The album he released at this time is amongst his absolute worst (Sometime In New York City), with lyrics that range from dismal to positively ghastly. Smith was attempting to make a name for herself as a bohemian artist on the fringes of the New York underground a couple of years later. Her efforts worked, as she went on to become the model of a punk priestess played by Gilda Radner on the then new Saturday Night Live. As for the "It Hits the Fan" episode of South Park, I still maintain that Stone and Parker are spoiled children attempting to get away with childish actions in an adult world. Their claims of taking the high road have always sounded false, and I defy anyone to show proof in their collected works that displays that they even know what "the high road" means.

It all boils down to this: If you can't get your point across without resorting to exploitative words, profanity or disturbing imagery, then perhaps you are not quite the statesman, spokesman or even "artiste" you might believe that you are.

Paladino draws derision from left and right
Firestorm on e-mails intensifies: 'Tea party' split is evident as candidate reels in uproar
By Robert J. McCarthy, Jerry Zremski and Tom Precious
News Staff Reporters
Updated: April 13, 2010, 11:00 pm /
Published: April 14, 2010, 6:54 am

Carl Paladino's mad-as-hell campaign for governor of New York took on a madcap feel Tuesday, as his penchant for forwarding racist and pornographic e-mails spawned a split in the "tea party" movement, derision from left and right in the national media and a bomb scare in his downtown Buffalo office.

Paladino promised an unconventional campaign, but even by unconventional standards, Tuesday's events surrounding the Buffalo developer's candidacy bordered on the surreal.

It all occurred a day after WNYMedia.net reported that Paladino's taste in e-mails ranged from one showing the president dressed like a pimp to another showing a woman engaging in bestiality. Another labeled photos of dancing African tribesmen as a "Rehearsal for Obama Inauguration," and one used a well-worn epithet for blacks.

In response Tuesday:

• The national "Tea Party Express" disowned the Paladino candidacy, as Mark Williams, the group's chairman, said in Albany: "You've seen the e-mails, ... so what makes you think we would support him?"

• Buffalo-area tea party organizers stood by the man they talked into running for governor, with Rus Thompson, a key leader of the group, saying: "I've known Carl for too long a time to even begin to fathom that he's a racist."

• Left-leaning bloggers were giddy that MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on Monday named Paladino "today's worst person in the world."

• The conservative New York Post ran an editorial on Paladino headlined "Bigot from Buffalo."

• Ellicott Square was evacuated after Paladino's campaign said that it received a bomb threat from what it characterized as "a black militant group."

• Paladino's spokesman blamed Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, Rep. Brian Higgins and the state Democratic Party for orchestrating a campaign against him.

• Outrages & Insights blog: The 'liberal elites' behind the Paladino e-mail story
• Earlier: Paladino under fire for e-mails

Not surprisingly, by the end of the day, political pros were asking questions not only about whether the Paladino candidacy could survive — but about how badly his suddenly infamous e-mails had damaged the fast-growing tea party movement.

"He's not going to be governor of New York," said Larry J. Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, who added: "It's a calamity every time something like this happens to the tea party. It's confirming a stereotype that has built up through the rallies, through the demonstrations at the Capitol."

Denounced in media

Clear divisions within the movement were evident Tuesday as the leaders of the national Tea Party Express that stopped in Buffalo on Monday distanced themselves from Paladino the next day in Albany.

Paladino's e-mails are "absolutely incompatible with anything we stand for," said Williams, the group's chairman.

"Pornographic, racist e-mails," he added. "How do you think that we would ever support something like that?"

Signs of the split could be seen Monday as Tea Party Express organizers never once recognized Paladino during the Buffalo event, though they allowed a fellow Republican contender for governor — Warren Redlich — to speak. They ended their program, never introduced him and were packing up when Paladino went on stage.

But in Western New York, tea partyers remained strongly behind Paladino, who has emerged as the face and the voice of the local movement. Leaders here say that they don't condone his dissemination of pornographic and racially denigrating e-mails, but that they rally around the conservative principles at the core of their movement.

Thompson said of the e-mails: "I think a lot of it is disgusting." But he added: "I absolutely have confidence in Carl because I know him as a human being and how passionate he really is."

Other tea party leaders agreed. Former East Aurora Mayor David J. DiPietro, a State Senate hopeful who with Thompson persuaded Paladino to run for governor, called the e-mail controversy "much ado about nothing."

And former Amherst Council Member Shelly D. Schratz, another tea party leader, said: "I'm disappointed in what has happened in the last 24 hours, but that's not going to change my mind about whether I support Carl Paladino."

The Paladino e-mails have ignited a firestorm of media attention.

Olbermann — the left-leaning MSNBC host — called Paladino "the tea party candidate for the clearly jinxed office of governor of New York State" and noted that Paladino's e-mails "contain racist jokes, porn and bestiality."

"Carl "My E-Mails May Contain Bestiality' Paladino, tea party candidate for governor in New York: today's worst person in the world," Olbermann said to the usual backdrop of horror-movie organ music.

Elsewhere, New York magazine's Daily Intel blog featured an item headlined "Carl Paladino watches bestiality videos."

"Whatever you think of the merits of bestiality porn, this is a really, really, really bad image for a political candidate," Daily Intel said. "And for someone who, we recently found out, fathered a love child with one of his employees, you might say this is the 9/11 of publicity."

Meanwhile, the New York Post slammed Paladino in an editorial labeled "Bigot from Buffalo."

"Late yesterday, Paladino's campaign issued a statement denouncing disclosure of the e-mails as a "liberal Democrat blog smear,' " the Post editorialized. "That is, it's all somebody else's fault. And we thought Carl Paladino was supposed to be a stand-up guy. Guess not."

The Root, a blog with commentary "from a variety of black perspectives," offered a succinct analysis: "Suddenly, David Paterson doesn't seem so bad."

Amid all the mockery, Paladino campaign workers were forced to cope with a reported bomb threat.

Campaign on defensive

Paladino's campaign headquarters in Ellicott Square reported receiving the threat at about 12:35 p.m. Tuesday from a male claiming to be with a "black militant group" and threatening to "bomb all of you." The building was evacuated, but tenants were allowed to return after 40 minutes when nothing was found.

In wake of all the chaos, Paladino campaign manager Michael R. Caputo contended that none of the last two days' events were coincidences. He noted that WNYMedia.net chose to post the e-mails on the day of the Tea Party Express visit.

He also said that an "emissary who is a mutual friend of Carl and Higgins" warned the campaign several weeks ago "to expect attacks."

" "If you get in this race, this is how I will hurt you,' " Caputo quoted the friend, blaming Higgins for leaking the e-mails.

"He will squirm and hide under a rock and deny it," Caputo said. "But this is a state Democratic Party hit delivered by Brian Higgins and a liberal Democratic blogger. The timing of it was measured very carefully."

Caputo said he now views the situation as "war, and believe me, we are heavily armed."

"My message to them is that two can play at this game," he said, adding that he wears Olbermann's "scorn as a badge of honor."

"[Paladino] isn't scared of these threats against his life and reputation and this politics as usual," Caputo said. "It's something he will eat for breakfast."

Higgins spokeswoman Theresa Kennedy was succinct in her reply to the blame Caputo assigned to the congressman for the uproar, saying: "That's ridiculous."
