the farmers should let people come pick them for free. that way they aren't wasting money destroying them.

But then prices would fall. And they don't want that.

I guess every penny counts when you're a money-grubbing piece of shit. It reminds me of the farmers in the depression who were destroying food while kids were starving to death.

There are very few calories in strawberries. No one will miss them, except for those fags who eat them with cream.

Being local to this story (the fields are just down the turnpike from me), I can see both sides of this story, but it still does not excuse the actions of the farmers. For one thing, they drained local water tables so badly in order to prevent a loss by the sever weather we had this winter to the point that people's houses are falling into sinkholes. On top of this, the farmers miscalculated their planting/ growing schedules, making the situation even worse. Through their own efforts they have screwed things up beyond being salvaged.

The fact is, this surplus does not and should not need to waste away unharvested. Food banks across the country could make use of the fruit, and if not donated it could be sold at a reduced cost to suppliers of these services. Either step would go a long way toward repairing the image of a bunch of selfish, petulant crop growers whom have brought the entire debacle upon themselves. As such, they have no one else to blame for their own short-sightedness.

No, I'm not saying there should be government intervention, and I'm not saying capitalism is bad. If you want to destroy your shit, have at it.

I'm just calling a cunt a cunt. There is no solution for that, as you well know.

I hate them just as much as you do. My only point was that the new law only feeds their greed.

And I'd have to say the biggest greedheads are the politicians.

A local report on the story, from last week's Sun Sentinel: Florida rotten strawberries: Florida farmers leave strawberries rotting in fields after price drops - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/business/fl-strawberries-rot-20100325,0,6865305.story?page=1)

The only reason they aren't letting the people pick them is due to liability, which some farmers have overlooked and are letting people come and get them. All they have to do is get people to sign a piece of paper releasing them of any liability should they get hurt in the filed and they're clear of any lawsuits.
I also see the point that with the price being way down, harvesting would cost them more than they are worth to harvest.

But destroying them should NEVER have been an option given the issues with the water table.

I don't see this being an issue of greed at all, more like a cost effective issue if you ask me.
I'd have found a way for people to pay me for them to come pick their own strawberries. Or better yet, given them to the towns people who were effected by the water table issue.

There are many things they could have done instead of destroying the crops...they are guilty of being idiots if you ask me.
