I actually saw Vic Hislop land the biggest white pointer he had landed (at that point)
in Phillip Island Victoria Australia. I remember them pulling it up on the wharf.
That thing 25 years later is still in a Formaldehyde tank about 30 miles inland
at some cheapo tourism attraction....

I'll google it, hey I might even be in the picture, that great white was just a little
smaller than this one. (But looked like it would swallow you in one piece)

No he doesnt, and has been paid by the Oz govt many times to take care of "out of control"
large white pointers many times.. Except the greenies in the last 15 years or so have stopped this.
When theres a rogue one out there, yeah Im all for it, but Vic started to take big sharks that were
doing nothing other than being big sharks. We get big fuckers in the southern waters of Oz....

I was fortunate enough to dive with two hammerheads (only about twelve footers) a dozen or so miles back in The Sea of Cortez. Fucking amazing and beautiful fish!!!

I remember them catching a mega mouth shark off the coast of San Francisco a few years back. Fortunately, they just got it's stats and let it disappear back into the abyss.

There's another "new" shark that's only been discovered recently. Saw it on last year's "Shark Week" on Discovery Channel. It's some arctic shark that feeds on whales and polar bears. They have a hard time documenting it cos of the frigid waters and it's apparently nocturnal.

They're guessing around forty years old. Bummer huh? Makes one wonder how old they can live?

Another cool fact about sharks is that they're immune to cancer. Due to that fact alone and not withstanding how vital they are to the food chain, they should quit being over-fucking-fished. Better yet, the Japanese (Sorry Cato. :cato: ) need to quit pulling them onto boats, chopping off their fins just to toss their now useless bodies back into the ocean to sink for that $500 a bowl shark fin soup!!! Fuckers!!! :mad:

I have heard about the immunity to cancer as well. They are considered a perfect organism, as they haven't evolved in over a million years, because there was no need to.
It is truly harsh how fisherman harvest shark fins.
As great as the movie Jaws was/is, it didn't do the shark's rep any favors. They just happen to rule the sea, much like the big cats on land, or birds of prey in the sky.

I have swum with Reef Sharks and Grey Nurses, that was cool... When I was younger I used
to be scared snorkelling over the Barrier Reef for fear of seeing one. Now if I ever get the

I've forgotten that one Nick...remember seeing pics of it as a kid though. The pictures and stories of sharks and dinosaurs were most worn pages in our family's animal library...we had a set of 10 huge books that had all the animal species...well, maybe not all separate insects, some of them as a group :)

That's a fact Jack!!! When I took my rescue diver certification, I did my blind night navigation in the dead of winter and it was colder than a witches teet!!! I'm guilty as charged cos I pissed like a racehorse in that wetsuit and it saved me from inevitably getting hypothermia. Plus, the wetsuit was a rental. :biggrin:
