I was there to see Ted Nugent, The Scorpions & Deep Purple.
Night Ranger was the next band on the line up after Ted Nugent and in between sets the opening keyboards to FREE BIRD started to play and the place went ape shit.

As much as I am don't care for Skynyrd, or Southern Rock in general, I have to admit as a song, it is a very well-written, arranged and produced song.

If a song played over the P.A gets a better reaction than the live band, then said live band sucks........

Happens quite frequently here in Bama. Furthermore, said live bands usually will play a few notes from Sweet Home Alabama to get a crowd reaction.
