DUBLIN — Bono's back.

The 50-year-old frontman for Dublin supergroup U2 has announced he's fully recovered from emergency back surgery in Munich in May — and has apologized to ticket-holding North American fans who must wait an extra year to see the band return to action.

In a laid-back hand-held video posted Wednesday on U2's Web site, drummer Larry Mullen Jr., bassist Adam Clayton and guitarist The Edge playfully suggest they've been auditioning new singers — but can't quite replace the middle-aged lad who's been the face of U2 since 1976.

The camera then pans to a Bono in rose-tinted lenses.

"I can sit. I can stand. I can move around a bit. Feeling strong, feeling confident," Bono says as he walks about an unidentified recording studio. "And I'm ready — rebuilt by German engineering, better design I'm told — and I'm going to be fighting fit next summer in the U.S."

Bono sheds no light on how he hurt his back, which his German neurosurgeons in May described as sudden partial paralysis. The health scare forced U2 to cancel the entire sold-out, 16-city North American tour this summer. All those dates have been rescheduled for May-July 2011 with the original tickets still valid.

Bono said he "wanted to apologize for the trouble that this injury has put you all through, those of you that bought tickets, and organized hotels and travel plans. It's a very big deal. People go to a lot of trouble to get U2 tickets and we don't take it for granted. Thank you for standing by us in our hour of need."

The singer said his injury, surgery and convalescence "was not a lot of fun for me. The injury was quite serious ... but staring at the ceiling has some advantages — forced indolence." He said he used the time to write new lyrics and tunes.

The 2009 swing of U2's ongoing 360-degrees World Tour was the biggest financial earner of the year, grossing more than $300 million — but U2 manager Paul McGuinness says the colossal show struggles to break even because it costs $750,000 daily to keep on the road.

U2's next scheduled performance is Aug. 6 in Turin, Italy.

In case you didn't hear him he said SHIT MUSIC and I cannot agree more.

I wouldn't piss on those cats if they were on fire. Bono and Hagar both need a grenade showed up their asses.

~Just sayin'~

Not as if they haven't toured in years, or fail to tour fairly regularly anyway...

Meh. Some of their music I really like, although less and less of it since the early 1990s.

I will at least give them credit for a couple of jams, but I will stop there. More than I can say about Van Hagar.

I'll give 'em credit because they stayed together and didn't fucking shit themselves like Van Halen did in 1985, and the other shit incarnations did in 1996 and 1999. You don't like some of their jams? Fine, I understand. But they've a much bigger catalog than most and there were bound to be fucking stinkers. U2 have, and I don't follow them like I once did, far more integrity than do 90% of the bands anyone can come up with DESPITE the fact they've finally made more money than God (I say finally, because they were relatively cash poor in comparison to other supergroups in the 1990s because of bad investments and because they put a fuck lot more into their live shows than any other band in history. They barely broke even on the ZooTV tour!). They've changed music in general and almost self-destructively altered their hit formula on more than one occasion (i.e. the Pop album after the success of Achtung Baby). So I don't blame them for the vanilla efforts they've given recently.

I agree with this statement. Everything they put out was solid upto and including Achtung Baby. Their albums as a whole since then are still good. Def better and more consistent thant other bands. Still some tunes I don't dig but their catalog as a whole is tight and solid.

Live they are great.

Edge creates great textures and soundscapes. The movie It Might Get Loud got me experimenting with effects again. He has definitely been a huge influence on guitar.

Ok perhaps I am being a little hard on the band and some more of their music for which I am not giving credit. As overrated as they may be U2 has more than just a couple jams that I can dig. I would just really like to backhand and bitch slap Bono around in front of his momma while I ask him to donate money to the VanHalener fund.

If I'm being honest, the band has come up with more than a few songs that I would consider timeless.

I think what is offputting is the way they started to believe the media hype that they were the last great rock band in the tradition of the Stones, Beatles, Who, etc., along with all the poli-sci 101 soapbox preaching. It's like, relax and just be content with being a good rock band that is able to some up with good rock tunes and leave that cloying "we're gonna save the world" nonsense to one side.
