I got 5 questions for old Warren.....

1 - Why can't you patch things up with Juan?

2 - Why did you write an ode to golden showers? (Urine Love)

3 - Can I pee on you?

4 - Why doesn't Stephen wash his hair?

5 - Can I have my $12.99 back for buying Detonator?

"One Step Away" is great although I have to admit the lyrics to Heads I Win are in the top 10 worst rock lyrics of all time.

Don't forget Jon Bon Jovi's backing vocals sucked too. One Step Away is indeed great, as is Shame and Top Secret. I thought that album was killer. It wasn't Invasion but it was way better than Reach For the Sky.

Hair metal is not Ozzy, Dio or Priest...

It's a long list that includes Ratt, Cinderella and Winger. I would say Warrant and Poison but they're not even music...

Although I would argue that if Joe Perry had come up with the riff to Unskinny Bop everyone including him would have been quite happy with it and the main differences between AC/DC and Cinderella are not musical they are about hair and shoes.

The riff to "Unskinny Bop" was lifted from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "I Know A Little" (heard below at about :40). Who knows where Skynyrd stole it from.

Warren should be sharing his royalty cheques with George Lynch. At one time they were roommates and George used to "borrow" Warrens Marshall's, and Warren,in return would steal Lynch's licks...

So i guess you would put Motley Crue into the hair metal category as well? To me, hair metal started with Poison and went to Warrant, Winger, White Lion, etc. The L.A. big three of Motley, Ratt and Dokken were before all that shit and shouldn't be included in that bullshit. They got thrown in after the fact by a bunch of stereotyping peckerheads.

Yes, but i am jaded. I was super into Under Lock and Key, enough so that i went over to Atlanta and caught them opening for Judas P in 86. I seriously thought they were the shit. By 88 when their 4th record came out, they had pretty much run their course.
If you look at Dokken, Ratt and the Crue, they all came out of greater Los Angeles around the same time. Dokken's release dates on their records coincide with the Crue's. Both were before Ratt. Juan Croucier was the bass player for Dokken on their first record before jumping to Ratt. Because of Under Lock and Key going platinum, Tooth and Nail went platinum and their first record went gold. Back for the Attack in 88 went platinum. Of course, the Crue and Ratt's stuff was all going platinum. Other than VH, which was the pioneer of that scene, they were the "big three" that came out of the area. Then came the big craze for the next band to come out of that area, whether it be GNR, Faster Pussycat, what have you. There were other bands from that scene around that time such as your Y&T's but they never reached the success. I agree Dokken was no Crue or Ratt, but they damn sure weren't chopped liver. They didn't have the success of a Poison but i think the integrity was there that the "hair bands" didn't have. I just have a difficult time thinking of Dokken as a hair band at all. Keep in mind, until the grunge scene came out and your Nirvanas and Pearl Jam's started kicking, there was no such thing as hair metal. At some point they came up with that tag to describe the late 80's bullshit and a lot of bands got thrown in that shouldn't have been included. Ratt is one of those bands. They deserve more respect than to go down in history lumped together with Warrant.

Hmmm...

I dunno, while I do like a song or two from Dokken and Ratt, a lot of their stuff just sounds so formulaic, predictable and boring. I thought the same thing back then...

Songs like Dangerous But Worth The Risk should have never seen the light of day and countless bands made crap like that...

Whatever integrity these bands had, it was lost on crappy, throw away songs and power ballads...
