When You're Strange: A Film About The Doors was recently released to home video. Picked up a copy today.
Not bad. While there hasn't exactly been a shortage of Doors home video put out over the years, this new documentary does manage to elevate itself beyond being another case of picking at a corpse. I'd say about 50% of the film and stills will be perhaps overly recognizable by longtime, hardcore fans of the band, and Johnny Depp's narration adds virtually nothing new that hadn't already been written about Jimbo and the band. What elevates it are liberal amounts of cleaned-up, restored excerpts from HWY and Feast Of Friends utilized in the documentary along with home movie footage, news footage and audio I'd either never seen or heard before or never seen in such a state of visual/audio quality. While I'd just as soon have seen full-length, restored versions of HWY (my bootlegged version is a pretty low-grade quality print, probably taken from a multi-generation source tape) and Feast of Friends released instead of being reduced to snippets used in yet another Doors documentary, I suppose When You're Strange will have to do in the meantime.

This film ran on PBS stations a few months ago, and I was fortunate enough to see it twice. It was pretty good, and the unreleased footage from some of the experimental films was quite effective in the context of the film. True, there isn't much revealed that anyone who has followed the band wouldn't already know, yet it still works for the newcomer as well as the die hard mainly because it doesn't attempt to be groundbreaking or the final word on the band. Rather, it sits fairly comfortable between the two poles, and as such must be considered a success. A further blessing being it does not feature much lengthy, self congratulatory and insomnia curing commentary from Ray Manzarek.

Does your negative horseshit ever stop? Other than Ozzy Osbourne, you continually yawn or bitch about artists named in every fucking thread. It's like listening to a child's commentary while clicking through the tv channels with a remote in his hand. At least Beavis and Butthead offered some opinionated insight to back up their opinions. STFU, asshole.

D & D requires some intuitive imagination. I'm thinking more along the lines of the the Legend Of Zelda, using the first NES console. Played on a black and white tv with aluminum foil fixed to the antennae or a set of rabbit ears, of course.

Elvis had a good point.

There is a great documentary out that interviews members of Hendrix's family, including BOTH of his brothers, and has a LOT of info.

However, because it was produced independently, JANIE THE FUCKING KUNT HENDRIX refused to allow them to use ANY music with Jimi on it. So they just created a soundtrack full of high-quality music in Hendrix's style that was very well done.

Here is a piece of it:

http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/jimi_hendrix_jimi/

October 12, 2007 she was quoted in the LA Times:

Janie Hendrix said there is enough material to keep a steady stream of "exciting projects" for another decade. She's circled spring of 2008 for the release of a project built around Jimi's February 1969 performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The concert was filmed for a theatrical feature that never materialized, but the project also has footage shot by a crew that followed the star for "about a month."

"We have Jimi as he hasn't been seen before, and not an actor playing Jimi. This is him as he was, with his guard down and on the road," Janie Hendrix said. "We feel fabulous about this project. You see him flying coach, going into hotels -- and it's him checking himself in, he's carrying his own bag, there's no people handling it for him -- you see people asking him for autographs. His charm comes across, the pressure he's under and just his life in moments backstage."

She said there will be a theatrical release as well as a DVD and pay-per-view release for the project.
"It will be huge for us, and it will be huge for Jimi and his legacy," she said. "The music is alive and well, and we want to make sure the memory of the real Jimi is alive and well also."

Then, in spring of last year, they announced it was going to be released this last fall.

I sent an email to Experience Hendrix 6 months ago, demanding to know when it was going to be released. They actually replied, and really did not provide any further info.

What a load of shit!

Not such a big shock that yet more Hendrix material is going to be coming out.

There's still some decent live footage that has as yet to be released officially.

While Janie (who, according to some, isn't even a blood relative of Hendrix and MIGHT at best be Hendrix's half-sister) certainly isn't beyond flogging a dead horse for a few bucks, I will say the Experience Hendrix company (which she runs, at least in name) does exert a decent degree of quality control over the Hendrix product they release. Much more so than the Mike Jeffrey/Alan Douglas posthumous early-to-mid 1970s stuff.

efinitely.

No she is not a blood relative of Jimi's. She was the daughter of the woman Al Hendrix married (his second wife) and was already a small child at least before her mom married Al.

They are just doing everything like a major record label. Releasing everything really slowly, to maximize publicity and sales of each release. The Royal Albert Hall DVD is gonna be a huge release when they get done with it. The film crew who shot that show had been following the JHE around Europe for a month or so, filming a LOT, before they even got back to London.

Sure would like to know how much else they filmed...as I had heard a long time ago they filmed several shows in Europe in early 1969.

It would be nice if they got the Hendrix stuff all out so that his "original" fans could see it before they themselves die of old age.

Morrison was so far up his own ass instead of 3D glasses they should give audiences a snorkel and a miner's helmet.

Man, Eric Clapton was out of it in that Hendrix documentary. I remember first seeing this film at a midnight matinee, and thinking that Clapton seemed strange. It was only a few years later I discovered that he was deeply into heroin when the interview took place. Notice his eyes and fluttering hand motions. Yikes.

Another thing that struck me was how the one former girlfriend (interviewed in bed) kept reaching down and scratching her obviously itchy snatch. Take a bath, you filthy hoser!

Always thought it was kind of odd that she was rubbing her vag, myself.

hambon, all those clips are from the 1973 'Jimi Hendrix' movie...it's widely available as an offical release on dvd, and pretty cheap as well (am assuming that was the one you were referring to that you had on vhs for years...if not, well, fuck me, then:biggrin:)

It was on Cinemax sometime back in the mid-80's. I hadn't seen it before, but I figured I'd tape it since it was Jimi.

Then when I finally got a chance to watch it, I was surprised to find out how good it was. It's very well put together....the interviews with Clapton, Jagger, and Townsend blended perfectly with all of the classic performance clips. Monterey, Woodstock, Isle of Wight...it's all in there. As far as documentaries go, that's how its done.

Some friends of mine run a music store, and we've been trying to hunt down a copy of it for quite awhile. It's the white buffalo of documentaries. All I'm able to find right now on Hendrix is the stuff that's come out in recent years, and I'm really not impressed with any of it.

By the way, that doc is available in a new expanded DVD that just was released a couple of years ago. Not a lot of extra stuff....mainly longer interviews.

The crack whore is named Pat Hartley. She was one of Andy Warhol's crowd. One thing for sure...in those interviews she is coked up to the max.

I have often thought all the world's problems could be solved if coke were legalized and pressed into use in the Diplomatic Corps.

The reason, is that when you get all gakked up, you begin to talk like her. It is as if being coked up causes you to speak in a different language. You could get some Kalahari bushman who speaks in that fucking click-language, put him in a room with a mountain of blow and a retarded stuttering Chinese dude, and after a day or so they would be speaking the same language and would be able to understand each other perfectly.
