Glenn McConnell and slaves

The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) recently held its annual fall Board of Directors meeting in Charleston, S.C. last weekend, dubbed “The Southern Experience”. The BVX.com reports that controversial pictures of S.C. Senate President Glenn McConnel have surfaced online, with the South Carolina leader dressed as a confederate soldier posing with Black people dressed as slaves.

Unfortunately, many southerners embrace the Confederate south as a foundation of their heritage, while many others wish to forget the era which was driven by racism, bigotry, and legislation which enslaved African-Americans.

The attendees may have found this humorous, but many viewers do not find this event comical at all.

TheBVX.com:

Now, McConnell has been known for his affinity to dress up as a Confederate soldier. It’s certainly something that African Americans in general aren’t too fond of. However, the fact that there are not one, but two, African Americans in attendance dressed up as slaves and willing to be photographed smiling is just mind-blowing. Perhaps they didn’t get the memo that being dressed up as slaves and taking pictures with a Confederate soldier isn’t cool.

Solution - Don't view

Big whoop. No one forced the blacks to dress as slaves and participate. And they were being historically & factually correct with the re-enactment. Are anti-gun people going to be offended when these guys carry fake muskets as well? Now had white people done this wearing black face make-up, I'd have a huge problem with it. As it is now, I do not.

The same folks getting upset about this minor incident are the same folks whose collective nose got bent out of shape during the Chuck Berry segment in Back To The Future. Who cares?

Wait. People got upset about that part of the movie? What was the reason?

Some overtly sensitive types complained that the section of the film dealing with the dance was racist. The fact that it skewered white/black race sensitivities of the time was completely lost on these folks, and some actually took issue that the film implied Berry could only have crafted his style and sound by stealing it from a white guy. The truth of the matter is Chuck Berry stole most of his songs from his piano player Johnnie Johnson, who was unfairly denied songwriting credit for all of those Berry hits. In fact, many times Johnson was not even credited for playing on the sessions.

Really that's a new one and that's a movie, this is Real Life!

Is that a dude dressed up as Aunt Jemima?

I don't care if some random dude dresses up as a confederate and some other people dress as slaves. Great, do it for the lulz. But if you're a political leader, you should realize that some people may genuinely be upset with you because you are held to a higher standard, or some people will view it as an opportunity to attack you, again, because you are held to a higher standard.

The answer? Don't make yourself vulnerable like this. Don't be dumb.
