Just askin! It's either this, keep looking for an electrical job, or re-enlist and risk going to that shithole called afghanistan.

Right now I'm working part-time at UPS but it ain't paying much.

I also have this lead singer in a metal band idea that keeps popping in my head. But how the fuck could you find anyone to start one up in bama? :hitch:

Even though a vacuum cleaner job has to suck (sorry, had to do it), chances are you will not have anyone shooting at you for wearing the company uniform. As for the metal band gig, just be thankful you are not pursuing the dream in Florida. I dunno about you, but for me, Latin-tinged heavy metal sounds so...unconvincing. Sort of like seeing Ricky Ricardo singing "Babaloo" in bondage gear.

There's nothing wrong with fixing those Kirby, Cylon vacuums. but I thought you had an aviation background?

I just GOTTA visit Florida one of these days. It can't be as bad as you always make it out to be... can it?

Cheers! :bottle:

Well unless I'm working for a mercenary aviation unit, there is no civillian equivalent to an Aviation Ordnanceman in the civillian world. And so far, I haven't seen any new civillian airliners with pylons that allow the plane to use aircraft weapons.

Well holy shit, the kirby assembler/maintenance job turned out to be a fuckin salesman job. I don't see that in the classified ad they posted. Luckily I halled balls out of there before I signed anything or listen to their speech.

This pent up anger makes me want to write a song and listen to some Sam Kinison.

Good for you. The outfit more than likely would have wanted you to work off a draw system, which today is little more than indentured servitude. Remember, there is a reason when a job opens up in this economy: Someone who previously held the position felt that being unemployed was a better option than doing it.

Luckily I'm still working at UPS part-time. I'll see if I can get a double-shift. But I'll tell you a few things I'd rather do than become a salesman:

-Re-enlist and go to Afghanistan.
-Be a stand up comedian or lead singer in band, and play in a really shitty redneck dive bar out in the deep south.
-Be a Janitor on a porn set.
-Sell weed to college students. LOL

As things head toward the holiday season, you'd think UPS would soon be moving some of their part timers to full time, at least temporarily.

Kirby is a scam. My sister in-law when she was young and naive pimped for them and she worked her ass off and ended up owing them money. DON'T SIGN ANYTHING! She's a cute blond and is a good salesperson. She's made a lot of money selling clothes and cosmetics but Kirby is her big mistake, boy was I dumb horror story. If you want a good vacuum cleaner buy a Miele or Lindhause. They aren't cheap but will last forever.

they'd run ads here that said "sports minded" and shit like that. i went to one of their recruitment drives once, answered the ad and was given an address and time. the local Kirby guy rented out a banquet room at a restaurant, kind of gave an ambiguous talk, and then played some video. John Houseman was in the video, and i'm thinking "stocks and bonds, okay, maybe." if you're old enough you'll remember Houseman was in those Smith Barney commercials, "they made money the old fashioned way, they EARNED it!" video's over, and the guy finally says the gig is selling Kirbys...and i walked right the fuck out. "but we set up the appointments!" i don't care, i'm not doin' it.

The Kirby vacuum is a damn good cleaner. I have had mine for almost 20 years, and it still performs like new. It's an upright, canister, and carpet cleaner all in one and pretty easy to transition between. I was in buying bags a couple months ago and ask about how much the new ones are and they said $1600 which is right around what they were asking when I bought mine long ago. I paid like $800 for mine and it has been worth the money. They would probably sell the shit out of them if they marketed them right and sold them in retail stores for a reasonable price.

They break enough that there's a local vacuum cleaner repair shop in town that advertises that they fix them. They don't break often I imagine, but your options are limited if one does...

Service center gig?

When I was a kid, I used to pull vaccuums out of the trash, unclog and reoil 'em, and flip 'em thru the Recycler.

I didn't buy belts or anything.. I'd empty the paper bags out by snipping the tops off then lining a bead of glue across and then stapling shut. Once I used dental floss and a carpet needle from my mom's sewing kit and pieced a broken belt together again - hey it didnt' have to last long to sell it!

Vacuums are bonehead simple things.

I'd think so long as you don't have to go door-to-door selling, this repair gig coud be a pretty cushy indoors bench job till the economy wakes the FUCK up.

They basically get you contracted to buy a certain amount of inventory. They will even give you gifts that in reality you are contracted to pay for. Once they have you on contract and you can't sell the inventory you are liable for it.

Also, stay clear of selling life insurance. You will pay several hundred dollars out of your own pocket to get licensed and then you will sell policies to friends and family and quit. A friend of mine is a general agent and this is the racket. Hire non-stop, the newbies sell new policies, premiums are collects and then the policies are canceled. All the money made is pure profit because the chances of someone actually dying before the policy is null and void is very low. So life insurance companies are always hiring. Basically, if they are always hiring don't waste your time with it.

built like a tank but it's an old design. Put one up against a Miele or Lindhause which are just as heavy duty, lighter, and comb the carpet better. Meile actually design their vacumes to last 20 years. It might be a good time to buy a vaccume. The Obama Administration is going to micromanage home appliance design which will mean shittier and less powerful vacuum cleaners that probably will cost more. Not to mention the US dollar keeps inflating making anything more expensive.

They don't have actual service centers I think, I'm pretty sure you have to send it back to a central facility (aka "the factory™"). And it wasn't "repair," but selling...

Well, I recall back in my SysInt days, down in City of Industry where all the Taiwanese clustered their PC parts warehouses (MB's, RAM, VGA cards, etc) there was this one joint that did dedicated factory-repair n' refurb for Dewalt and Black and Decker - because you try to get out of the parking lot and there'd be pallets of incoming cordless drills and routers n'shit being stacked in the parking lot all the time.

And the guys there, just kinda sat around not doing anything.. I mean what's there to do at a place like this: "I plugged it in/didn't work. Status ticket: DOA." NEXT!

Too bad the Kirby gig was a sham. There are still places that do service believe it or not in the USA.. the last place I used for example Heartland in Buttfuckegypt, Kansas does auth repairs for the $50K Panasonic LCD projectors we used to run.. and THEY didn't do shit! Plug the fucking thing in "oh your LCD chip's bad. status: two grand to repair it.."

You just gotta look around in the phone book under Service Centers.

I will have to check out a Meile and Lindhause because my wife has been wanting to get another cleaner because I use that Kirby as a canister in the garage and to vacuum my cars out and it is older anyway. She wants a new one just for the house. I have been putting it off because the Kirby is still working fine and a grand for a new one, just because my wife wants it, is a total luxury.

I have a 20 year old Lindhause commercial that is over at the barn where we have a music room and guest apartment in the loft. It's been a great vacuum.

I'm allergic to dust mites and bought a Meile tank vacuum for the house because it has zero blow by and excellent filters and it's wonderful. I only paid $250 new for it but the dealer was closing them out for a newer model.

Blame Eddie and Alex Van Halen for taking 3 FUCKING YEARS (and counting) after a tour to put out a single note of new music.

Once some new material comes out, Kirby vacuums will be the last thing on anyone's mind around here.
