Rahm has long-term political aspirations. He knows Chicago is dumb enough to elect him mayor and he can hide out there until the time is right to worm back into Washington DC again. The good news is he might rape and pillage Chicago but that gets him out of the White House and it's Chicago's problem and not the rest of the nation's.

It just shows Rahm is at least smart enough to know Obama is history and the Democrats won't have the power they enjoyed after this election. Being tied to Obama any longer will hurt his reputation so he wants out, maybe it's a fantasy to run Chicago but Rahm is a professional politician. He will try and get back into Washington one way or another.

Next to the president himself, the next powerful person in the White House is the chief of staff. Why in the hell would you want out of that position for a shot at being just a mayor? Rahm wants to distance himself from the next two years of Obama. He's cutting and running. A guy like Rahm doesn't give up power unless it's going to hurt his image long-term. He knows Obama is going to tank hard in the next two years and without a loaded congress to ram things through, what's the point?
