I honestly don't recall hearing this before, as it's one of my favorite Led Zep tunes. Obviously from sometime in 1976, as Dave mentions the tune as being from the "new" Zeppelin album ("HOFN" is from Presence, released in '76), and as usual, he did not bother to learn the lyrics but still learned the song.

The fellow that posted this clip is named Chris Gossett, and he has an outstanding Youtube site that is chock full of cool stuff that really is well worth a visit. You can find him at gossett2006 (http://www.youtube.com/user/gossett2006) :baaa:

Cool find - thanks. Pretty good, even though Dave 'forgot the fuckin words'. haha.

Would be great to know where it was recorded as well. I wonder if VH have tapes of this stuff - y'know, if it was recorded by friends, etc? I know Mike Anthony is supposed to be a collector of boots, but a lot can be done with this stuff.

The Led Zep youtube channel (here: http://www.youtube.com/user/ledzeppelin) provides an interesting model of how a band can make use of bootleg stuff. I think you can trace it back to the Zeppelin DVD, which is when Jimmy Page started collecting and / or buying up fan recordings and videos as a way of trying to historically document a period that the band did not always record themselves.

If Eddie Van Halen could quit designing hopeless striped shoes and hats for a minute he might realise that there is a real historical legacy here, and it might be an idea - might be in his interest as the one who has (unfortunately) been left in charge of VH - to officially gather it up and try and present it to the world in a way that is commensurate with Van Halen's standing.

But, I guess he'll continue to administer The Stripes instead ...

Judging by the track's length, the recording dates from May 9, 1976 at the Goldenwest Ballroom Norwalk, CA. For referencing stuff like this, I often refer to this link: VH BOOTS SITE (http://www.vhboots.com/)

It's on Club Days: Goldenwest Ballroom Pt II. Incidentally, I have an original copy of that particular boot, purchased before I knew anything about boot trading. If anyone wants a copy, gimme a holler thru PM.
