Leslie Nielsen, who made audiences laugh with his ridiculous seriousness and deadpan deliveries in the absurd scenes of comedy films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun has died. He was 84.

His agent confirmed that the actor died Sunday near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., surrounded by his "lovely wife and friends" at 5:34 p.m. ET, due to complications of pneumonia.

Nielsen had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks as a result of pneumonia, his agent said.

"Just in this last 48 hours, the infection has gotten too much," his nephew Doug Nielsen told Canadian radio station CKNW. "He just fell asleep and passed away."

Damn. He was one of a kind. :(

One of my favourite moments of his is in Airplane! when the plane starts nose-diving, and he goes "What the hell is going on up there?!" (whilst he's in the middle of delivering a baby) and he sticks his head in through the cock-pit door only to see the inflatable automatic pilot getting blown up (or an act suggesting something else, from his view)...and the look on his face! I can never ever get sick of that. LOL!

Many thanks for the all laughs, Leslie.

I used to see him play corporate heavies in TV crime dramas back in the late 60s/early 70s.

This is fucked up. The Police Squad stuff had me laughing on the floor until my sides hurt.

Funny how Airplane! really sort of re-invented him as a comedic actor. He deserved all the success he had.

Goddamit. This fucking sucks! :(

REST IN PIECE LESLIE. WE WILL MISS YOU MORE THAN YOU WILL KNOW.

I wish I could find a clip of Nielsen appearing on SNL. He did a "commercial" for a company that created a series of products including Bung King Hemorrhoid Creme ("The only suppository with my face on the box!") and Dripmaster adult diapers ("That's why I wear Dripmaster, the undergarment from Geritech that takes the worry out of walking around. In fact, I'm relieving myself right now!").

And when he showed up on Letterman (while Dave was still at NBC) with a farting device which he used with his typical deadpan, straight face, it was comedy genius.

RIP.

Yep. The original Police Squad (In Color!) show was just as good as Airplane!, but failed on tv because you had to pay attention to it or you'd miss something going on in the background. ABC only ran something like 3-4 episodes and canceled it, which sucked because before anyone could spread the word, it was gone.

Yeah I liked Police Squad best. I thought the comedy was better suited to the short format rather than the full length movies.

They only made a season of 6 which is common in the UK but unusual in the US.

It is always funny when you see some of his pre Airplane work.

I was watching TV one night and came across a film called 'Incident in San Francisco' from the early 70s where he plays a character identical to Frank Drebin except it's not meant to be a comedy. I never realised for about 20 minutes. :)

He was also in a couple of episodes of Columbo.

I guess at 84 he had a decent innings.

Then you realise he was younger than Va when Airplane came out.

I hope that's set you up on a nice positive note for the week... :D

I saw ever episode. Spent most of the time doubled up in fits of hysterical laughter.

Why in the FUCK they would cancel such an incredible comedic show is beyond me.

But then, TV executives are FUCKING MORONS!

It was TV executives who decided that Bruce Lee should not be in the TV series HE CREATED - "Kung Fu", because they thought he looked "too Asian".

I have always held TV executives in extreme contempt. They are just cheap versions of idiot movie studio executives. Who are the idiot cousins of major label executives who learned the music biz from a special ed class.

You really should check out Bill Carter's latest book The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy (http://www.amazon.com/War-Late-Night-Early-Television/dp/067002208X). Carter is the same guy that wrote Monday Night Madness about MNF, and The Late Shift (http://www.amazon.com/Late-Shift-Letterman-Network-Battle/dp/0786880899/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b), about the Letterman/Leno debacle for the Tonight Show. If anything, it will confirm your opinion that tv execs are some of the most clueless assholes walking the Earth.

My friend wrote "Spy Hard" (he also helped write "The Kentucky Fried Movie" and "Airplane" - but due to creative differences, sold his share of the script). He has pictures of Leslie and himself in his office. Said he hated what they did to his script, but loved LN.

Some of the best quotes:

"Nice beaver!"

"Who are you and how did you get in here?!" "I'm a locksmith and...I'm a locksmith".

"Wilma, I promise you; whatever scum did this, not one man on this force will rest one minute until he's behind bars. Now, let's grab a bite to eat."

"Yes, well when I see five weirdo's dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of a hundred people, I shoot the bastards, that's my policy." "That was a Shakespeare in the park production of Julius Caesar you moron! You killed five actors, good ones!"

"We're sorry to bother you at such a time like this, Mrs. Twice. We would have come earlier, but your husband wasn't dead then..."

Frank: It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day.

Jane: Goodyear?

Frank: No, the worst.

Frank: That's the red-light district. I wonder why Savage is hanging around down there.
Ed: Sex, Frank?
Frank: Uh, no, not right now, Ed.

Frank: Now, Jane, what can you tell us about the man you saw last night?
Jane: He's Caucasian.
Ed: Caucasian?
Jane: Yeah, you know, a white guy. A mustache. About six-foot-three.
Frank: Awfully big mustache.

Frank: I'm single! I love being single! I haven't had this much sex since I was a Boy Scout leader!
-Music Stops. People stare.-
Frank: I mean at the time I was dating a lot.
