The Austin music community is mourning the death of Bill Maddox who died Monday morning in his Southwest Travis County home.
Musician Stephen Barber has been friends with Maddox since the age of six when they grew up in Abilene. They started a band called the Cadillacs, and later moved to Austin and started the group the Electromagnets. They would later ask legendary guitarist Eric Johnson to join them.
"Whether he was playing with a world class band, or a little local band, or playing a circus or playing whatever he was in, he gave all he had," said former band-mate and long time friend, Barber.
Maddox also played in Alien Love Child and later started another group called Project Terror.
"We got started at a really young age and played in bands throughout our lives," said Barber.
Now Barber is mourning the loss of his childhood friend. Maddox died Monday morning from a gunshot wound.
Travis County Sheriff Department investigators 63-year-old John Debrecht broke into Maddox's Southwest Travis County home and there was a struggle between the two men.
Debrecht lives less than a mile from Maddox, and neighbors say they would often see Debrecht run and train for marathons in the neighborhood.
Close friends of the Maddox family say the motive was not burglary. They tell KVUE News Maddox's wife says Debrecht broke into the home through the front glass door, acted strangely, and called the home his, "safe house."
Friends say Maddox tried to stop Debrecht from going after his wife Rhonda. Travis County investigators will not say how the two men were shot. They say everything is speculation until the investigation is complete.
Debrecht was listed in critical condition at University Medical Center Brackenridge. He was shot in the stomach.

I've witnessed Bill a few times with Johnson. Great drummer. What a lousy way to go....
