So I was driving home early this afternoon. Got about 3 miles from my house, and 2wice within a mile I see an AT&T truck by the side of the road. I pull over at the second one and ask the guy if he has heard anything about AT&T bringing DSL to the area in which I live.

He said yes, they were upgrading the cable to fiber, and when they are done AT&T is going to offer their full package of U-Verse, Broadband and VOIP!

He said he could not give me a specific time frame, but he said it should be sometime this year for sure.

About fucking time. Been living here for 8 fucking years almost, and am sick to death of my shitty dialup connection. The ol' tin-can-and-string works better than my internet does.

I live in the sticks but we have had cable and DSL for years. In fact, fiber optic runs down the main road.

There's nothing more frustrating than trying to rub one out with lame dialup.

God bless high speed broadband.

Hey HR, I live out in the sticks, too, and up until August of last year I was on dialup, so I can feel your pain. I'm on DSL, and it's only 256 kbps speed, but it's SO much better than antiquated, slow dialup! The reason I have 256 is the local phone company has a monopoly on rural DSL in this area, and their rates are high as fuck. The plans start out at $20 a month for 256, and that sounds cheap, but you have to have phone service with them in order to get DSL, and it's $35 a month, plus I'm renting a modem from them for $5 a month, so I'm paying a total of $60 a month. The next speed, 768, is like $50 a month, and I think that's way too high compared to what other companies are charging for much higher speeds. Don't even ask how much 1.5 mb and 3 mb speeds are. Ridiculous.

Man that sucks. You can get 1.5MB/s DSL from AT&T for 10 bucks a month. That is, if your phone company does not have a monopoly on the phone service.

File a complaint with the State Consumer department.....whichever department is in charge of regulating utilities. Technically you should be allowed to sign up for DSL from whoever you want I would think

white mountain online is the only isp on the apache reservation where my mother lives.
it is still 56k dial-up. technology moves a lot faster the closer to the ocean you get.
it moves much slower the further you get from water and sea level.
between my parents and siblings, and other relations of mine and a few very close dear buddies of mine.......i could tell you plenty........depending on what part of
the american southwest you want to know of.........

When I was in college the business school's computer lab had internet access. This was before search engines and you had to go the the dean's office and get a huge binder full of instructions and codes. Nobody was using it but then the dean convinced the faculty that this was the future, it was costing a lot of money and so give students that use it for research extra credit for a motivation. Anyways, us students still weren't using it because you had to type in the exact code and know exactly what you were looking for and the search path to find it. In other words, it was like trying to use a library without a card catalog.

Then one day someone said, hey, you can find porn with this internet thing. Suddenly all the code and search paths for porn was shared and the computer lab got real busy suddenly.

I wonder if they still make business majors buy the Wall Street Journal. There was always that one class that required a Wall Street Journal subscription. Nobody read it unless you needed it for a research project. Where I lived the daily Wall Street Journals would pile up like crazy because it was being delivered to the building and nobody was even bothering to pick it up. Forget about a homeless person making a blanket out of newspaper, he could build a whole fucking house out of those Wall Street Journals. If the Wall Street Journal had some porn in it, people would read it everyday.

I salute your patience, I wouldn't post here if I was on dial up.

My folks have it and I tried it the other week. It's almost completely unusable now because websites have got so much more bigger in size because they assume you have decent bandwidth.

When I first moved to where I am now, the nieghborhood was brand new. No lines for anything high speed. So we got satellite internet. They came out & put a mini dish on the roof. Worked well...a lot better than dial-up...but would cut out at really bad times. Still was a good way to go until DSL lines were set.
