View Full Version : The FORD Country Dance Party Remix thread
Remember 12" singles? Some of those damn remixes were pretty cool back in the day. Not like the godawful techno shit "remixes" now.
Post your faves from the old days...... starting off with some Bowie w/Stevie Ray, Nile Rodgers & Tony Thompson....

I still like this first album better than anything Trent has done since, but I was happy to see him win the Oscar anyway, as opposed to the usual orchestra soundtracks that usually get that prize.

What sucks about "White Lines" is that Grandmaster Flash was not even involved in the recording of that song. By then the fucking cunt who was his "manager" had successfully maneuvered him out of his own band and was trying to ass-rape him financially.
That said, that was the song that introduced me to that group, and even though the mix is pretty long, I am downloading it on my shitty dialup connection RIGHT FUCKING NOW, cos I wanna hear it.
GREAT original fucking idea for a thread Ford. Thanks! :D
Damn, you learn something every day around here. I was never a huge Grandmaster Flash fan. Only knew White Lines & The Message, really (great songs though both of them are) and really had no clue about the soap opera behind the scenes. Their manager must have been the Ray Danniels/Allen Klein of the hip hop world.

Man, that "White Lines" Remix KICKS TOTAL FUCKING ASS!
Right away makes ya wanna get up off your ass and DANCE!
And, the visual part of the video - a still image of the single - you can see it is 'produced' by Sylvia Robinson - she is the goddamnable greedy cunt bitch slut whore that fucked over Grandmaster Flash. She and her 'associates' read the book on 'ass-raping the artist', and then took it to the extreme, writing new chapters along the way.
I suppose I could say if it were not for her, "White Lines" would never have been heard by the public.
But she fucked the GrandMaster royally. Did not even use lube. She used sand.
I found an autobiography of Grandmaster Flash only a few months back called "The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, And My Beats".
It is a fascinating story of growing up in New York City, and the birth of hip-hop, rap, etc.
It was Grandmaster Flash who INVENTED 'scratching'. He was years ahead of his time.
When he was a kid, he always wanted to know how stuff worked. His family would suddenly discover electronic items around the house that were torn apart, as he wanted to know how they worked. Eventually, when he learned enough about electronics, he would go dumpster diving for junk TVs, stereos, etc. so he could have parts to build his own little PA systems. DJs in Harlem and surrounding areas became locally famous for their abilities to spin records at outdoor parties. And that was the scene he grew up in.
Ok, enough about that. Back to the purpose of this thread.
Oh, and Trent Reznor is a genius who deserves every bit of credit that he gets.

I was reading somewhere today in which someone asked why didn't the score for Inception win the Oscar instead. I replied it's because Trent Reznor is THE indisputable musical genius.

Well, aside from that, Hans Zimmer is a badass composer of film scores. He has already been nominated for other Oscars, and he won the Best Film Score Oscar for the Riddley Scott film "The Gladiator" (which is one of my favorite soundtrack albums).
So it did not bother me that Hans did not get it.
But I am VERY pleased that Trent won. He kicks fucking ass!

Arthur Baker did several different remixes for Springsteen's Born In The U.S.A. album, and in some cases the results were better than the album tracks. Soon after working on this album, Baker swore off remixes altogether, and went on to concentrate on producing only.

My favorite remix from The Boss is probably "Cover Me" which was a bit more gospel/R&B oriented than the original, but I can't seem to find that one. I'll bet Max Weinberg really hated the "Dancing In The Dark" remix, since it seems to favor a drum machine over the real thing.

Trust me, I looked everywhere for the "Cover Me" remix, as I really like it as much as you do. No luck.
The pisser about those BITUSA 12 inch singles was that each one had 3-4 different versions of the song it featured. Consider that these also came as 45s with different, non-album tracks on the B side, and it adds up to a boatload of material, as 7 songs were released as singles from the album.
Maybe Bruce will include them on the rumored "Tracks II" box set? Or the inevitable 30 year deluxe remaster of Born In The USA (assuming it will get a similar treatment to "Born To Run")

I always liked this song, for some reason I always associated with more of a spiritual feel, than something written for Rosanna Arquette.

Well, in Page's case he was pretty strung out on heroin at the time. Not sure what Yes' excuse was.
Jimmy also played on this one (apologies for the lack of sound quality, but it's the only copy I could find)

Sometime in the early nineties, I had a CD of authorized remixes put out by a record label, possibly Warners. It had a cool version of the Doobie Brothers "Long Train Runnin", some Phil Collins tunes, ect. I'll be damned if I can find the CD, so I went looking for the track at Youtube. Good luck with that one, there are loads of the things, yet not one of them sounds like the one I owned. Good luck finding the 12 inch version of "What A Fool Believes", too.

I had no idea such a thing even existed :headlights:
How long did it take you to find that? I was looking for Depeche Mode the other day, and all I could find were "new" techno-crap mixes that had nothing to do with the original song. And unlike most of the "videos" on YouTube that show nothing but a turntable, that one's actually worth watching because of the "tie-dye" vinyl.

This is the remix of "Sweet Emotion" created for the Pandora's Box set in 1991. Now, see if you can follow the logic here: Inexplicably, this version was NOT included in the set, but was used in the video made to promote the set. The remix was finally made available 13 years later, on a revised version of the band's familiar red and white Greatest Hits album. The new version of that collection (now called Greatest Hits 1973–1988) contained oddly edited versions of the band's tunes instead of the originals, including the strange version of "Sweet Emotion" included on the hits album when it was released in 1980. So that means (for those not yet lost) that the Greatest Hits album includes two versions of "SE", neither one being the studio version (from 1976's Toys In The Attic) familiar to everyone on the planet.
In any event, here is the remix. The drums are much louder, giving a more propulsive feel, and that goofy phasing from the studio/single track has been removed. I just hope I posted the correct version.

Chef how was it that Jack Douglas was great with these guys in the studio but killed Zebra in the studio?
They had so much potential from their early live recordings.
Anyway, the story on Sweet Emotion that I thought was interesting was that sound effect that occurs repeatedly during the riff.
It was a backward recording of Jack Douglas ripping up a New York Post. Which unfortunately was pushed down in this mix.

When I saw the words Country Dance in the title I was expecting the best of square dance romps volume 1.
I was relieved to find out it was just a bunch of expanded disco hits on 45.
Predictably the only 12" 45 I had was a Michael Schenker single Ready to Rock. One 3 minutes song on a whole LP sized vinyl side. Great solo though. Cry for the nations and the best live version of Into the Arena were on side 2.

I don't know what to tell you, for two reasons. First off, think back to the first Cheap Trick album. Douglas made them sound as raw as their live act at the time, a ferocious sound the band has only returned to twice, sometime in 1997 and recently. Secondly, I have some early live tapes of Zebra as well, and they certainly sounded a great deal closer to a raw garage/punk band than some filtered down, neo-Zeppelin. It simply doesn't add up and seems counter-intuitive, but then again, the band produced two of their first three albums themselves, so who knows what was really going on.
