My dad was a union contractor and he had to totally restructure his business because he couldn't compete with the non union guys. Where he could compete was on workmanship but people were caring less and less about that. About the mid 1970's is when the middle class started to get replaced by cheaper alternatives. It just got more rampant in the 80's and 90's. Unions aren't black and white. You just can't say they are bad or good. They are good when they protect workers from abuse but they are bad when they become the abusers. One thing is for sure, nobody cares about the American working class anymore and that includes skilled, educated workers. Why should they when they can have slaves in that plantation called the People's Republic of China make stuff for much less.
