DETROIT (AP) — Kid Rock says he'll be playing a hometown concert at Detroit's baseball park this summer. That's not surprising, considering the 40-year-old Detroit-based musician makes a habit of playing local gigs.

It's how he made the announcement Thursday that was slightly unorthodox.

Rock, Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom and retired Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios used paddle boards to cross the Detroit River to Belle Isle. A bare-footed Rock then strolled to a beachfront microphone and lectern and said he'd be playing Comerica Park Aug. 12 with opening act Sammy Hagar and the Wabos.

The rocker says Chelios called him a day earlier and asked if he wanted to go paddle-boarding.

Knowing his booking manager wanted him to announce the August show soon, he combined both activities into one.

I've never been to a Kid Rock gig but it seems a weird idea to have a fat old clown as your support act?

Maybe Nugent, Toby Keith, and Sarah Palin will show up and turn it into Teabaggerpalooza

To me Kid seems like as big of a glory hound as Sammy. The guy does cross overs with country music stars to try and get in on that deal. Then he teams up with Skynyrd to appeal to the southern rock crowd. He is everywhere. Reminds me of the guy in the rainbow colored wig that used to appear at all of the sporting events holding up the John 3:16 sign. Who better to have opening than the king of all glory hounds?

Also like Hagar and Nugent not many people outside the US have heard of him.

Man. Opening for Kid Rock? I just remember Sam saying he wasn't an opening act when he was complaining about his dressing room on the Sam & Dave tour. Dude has really faded these last 10 years. He really should just pack it up & retire. Sure, it will disappoint his tens of fans. But best to go out on top.

Whatever happened to that big plan of his to never charge for tickets again? http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-confused-smileys-718.gif (http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/skype-emoticons.html) http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-rolleye-smileys-725.gif (http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/facebook-smileys.html)

SAMMY HAGAR Hopes To Make Concerts Free In The Future - Aug. 1, 2005

BLABBERMOUTH (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=39966)

Launch Radio Networks reports: Sammy Hagar hopes that in the near future he won't have to charge for a concert ticket again. Hagar told Launch that his other ventures, like Cabo Wabo tequila and his Cabo Wabo Cantina clubs, are making enough money to subsidize his live dates. He plans to pass that benefit on to the fans. "I'm getting real close to being able to go out and perform, big concerts with huge production, for free," he said. "That's what I'm trying to get to. It's a year or two early from being able to do it for free, assuming the company keeps growing the way it is."

Hagar's "The Tequila Made Me Do It Tour" kicks off this Saturday (August 6) in Independence Township, Michigan. Besides music from Hagar with both THE WABORITAS and MONTROSE, the shows will also feature a parking lot tailgate party with beach volleyball, auto shows, a "Sammy-oke" karaoke stage, Mariachi bands, and photo ops with donkeys wearing sombreros.

Hagar, who spent most of 2004 with a reunited VAN HALEN, hopes to start work on a new album later this year.

He realized that he'd have to pay the people to come to his concerts as well. It was then immediately unfeasible because the amount he would have to pay each concertgoer was more than the show would cost.

I think the birthday shows he does every October in Cabo are free. But he is raking in the dough by selling drinks & stuff since he owns the bar. So he still makes money.

From what I've heard, Kid Rock is a hell of a live act.

Never been a huge fan of him on record - although 'Devil Without a Cause' was interesting enough - but I'd be open to checking out a show. I'm guessing it'd be a lot of fun if you didn't take it seriously.

I dread the moment when Sam gets on stage to 'jam' with Kid Rock, however.

I enjoyed Kid Rock when he was mixing in Beastie Boys circa License to Ill/RUN DMC mixed in with Skynrd/Southern White-Trash rock.

had a great attitude, which was pretty refreshing in the world post-grunge.

don't really dig his current stuff, but I respect the guy.

In a country notorious for something called the "donkey show", I wouldn't want to risk finding out...

Interesting comparison. That John 3:16 guy (also known as the Rainbow Man) is currently serving three life sentences in a California jail. :yikes:

Rainbow Man's dark side keeps him from getting out (http://articles.latimes.com/2008/may/19/sports/sp-crowe19)

Not only is he talking about putting on free shows (as a means of trying to drum up publishitty), he now has to offer Mariachi bands and photo ops with donkeys.

I have to laugh. He is ever more desperate to publicize himself at all costs now that the Mighty Van Halen have announced their first run of dates for their upcoming World Tour with UNCLE DAVE....the Patron Saint Of Rock Music!

Seems like he is really trying to brand his name as an entire event type thing rather than just based purely on his music. Whatever floats peoples boats. I don't really care. If the people that go & spend money actually enjoy themselves, more power to 'em.

Sammy probably gave up on the "free shows" idea, because the Chickenshit album actually sold a few copies, so he thought people would pay to see him again.

I wonder how many casual fans go when they see the local paper says "Sammy Hagar @ etc club Fri night" and are expecting to hear Right Now & Top Of The World? I mean, a lot of my old friends & girlfriends don't follow at all. They just liked Van Hagar and would expect seeing Sammy they would get to hear those songs.

I'm pretty sure Chickenfoot doesn't play any of it, and the Wabos only play a couple tunes.

There is nothing wrong with a musician completely robbing Jimmy Buffet of his act mannerisms and stage show and bar look and , and,... and,
It is no different than opening a McDonalds across the street from a McDonalds.
I saw a guy wearing those, not pants, not shorts the other day they clashed with his purse.
Excuse his, "Wabo Man Bag"...one must be p/c in this world of copycats.

Sammy Hagar is The Mullet taken to the extreme of obsession.

I wonder if Hagars bar bucks at his establishment are called Mullets.

I just realized everthing I just wrote confirmed the 2012 end of the world scenario no longer causes me fear.;)

I think your right. It seems like he fancies himself as the second coming of Jimmy Buffett. The only difference is that instead of Parrotheads coming to his show, he has Dickheads coming to his.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Fat Ched the Retarded and Kid Rock the Retarded.
The combined suck is gonna be more than a human can tolerate, and will most likely cause violent vomitting and involuntary and explosive bowel movements throughout the crowd.

Damm Sam, you really suck.

The reason Sam is giving free concerts is he's hoping he will have an audience then because nobody wants to pay to see him. The next thing Sam will be offering money, whores, and free booze if you show up to a show of his.

Good point, Ford.

He's not really touring, he's just havin' a bit of fun whilst advertising & selling his products.

I tell ya, if he hadn't been such a shit head & so full of himself, givin' everyone shit about how Dave sucked without even having met the guy, he'd actually be someone you could admire.

Sure, he may have been talkin' shit about Dave just to get on Eddie V.'s good side, but that doesn't change the fact that something like that makes him a shitty human being. If ya wanna blow Eddie, do it in private, motherfucker.

I think I may have a problem with shit. Just look at how much shit I wrote in this post.

Oh, wait. It's about Spambulent.

Cheers! :bottle:
