KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Ahmad Wali Karzai, a brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and one of the most powerful men in southern Afghanistan, was killed on Tuesday, an official and a family member confirmed.

"I confirm that Ahmad Wali was killed inside his house," said Zalmay Ayoubi, spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province, where Ahmad Wali Karzai lived and was head of the provincial council.

A cousin of Ahmad Wali Karzai, who asked not to be named, also confirmed to Reuters that he had been killed.

Any more info on how he was killed, why, or by whom? This is major news. Curious as to why it's not on any main news sites front pages.

Even the BBC doesn't have much to say at the moment, and it's actually morning in London by now.....

Afghanistan: Karzai half-brother 'assassinated'

The half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been killed in an assassination attempt, officials say.

Ahmad Wali Karzai, the younger half-brother of the Afghan president and leader of the Kandahar Provincial Council, had been shot dead, presidential spokesmen Waheed Omar told the BBC.

Initial reports suggest he was shot by his bodyguard in his house in Kandahar.

A controversial politician, some saw him as a defender of Pashtun rights.

Critics said he was a warlord mired in corruption. Ahmad Wali Karzai had survived attempts on his life before, most recently in 2009.

He was a staunch ally of US and allied forces in Afghanistan, but had also been accused of drug trafficking.

International forces in Afghanistan have expressed shock at the killing.

Mr Karzai's body has been taken to a hospital, says the BBC's Quentin Somerville in Kabul.

So his bodyguard did it? Geez, where's a corrupt drug dealer supposed to find good help these days??

I'm not sure Karzai is any better than the Taliban that were running the country before him. At least with the Taliban they were up front about what the rules were and what they were doing....like it or not.
