View Full Version : Was just reminded of the "Bands with Masks" syndrome.

Once Slipknot rose in popularity, suddenly all these clones showed up.

I should start a band where we all wear paper grocery sacks over our heads.

I could call it "Paper Sacks Of Death".

I could write such spine-chilling songs like "One Bag Or Two?" and "I Want To Give That Lady A Tip". Oh, and the most depraved song would be an evil pornographic vegetable-death song about setting paper grocery sacks on fire while having sex in the Produce Department, and I could call it "Burning Paper Of Vegetable Oil Reproduction Schematic", and perhaps it might get banned in maybe 1/4 of a country, and I might even get sued by some parents whose teenagers were caught screwing an apple crate with a hole drilled in the side of it while licking a piece of asparagus. The publicity would be great.....foodies would call me the "Great Satan of the vegetable world" and would call me a fruit murderer and vegetable rapist.

Oh the horror of it all......

It's getting damn hard to find paper sacks anymore. Most the stores use those flimbsy plastic bags that split open and all the jars fall and shatter sending shards of glass and the contents all over the parking lot.

Trader Joes still uses paper bags. Just don't try carrying them by the handles if there's anything heavier than a loaf of bread in there though.

Didn't Mushroomhead have a problem/rivalry with Slipknot over the whole mask/costume thing? I think they came out first, but it would appear Slipknot were far more popular.
Hardrock, would this band only sing odes to paper, or would plastic be included in the canon as well?

I hate the fuck out of those plastic bags! All of your groceries fall out of them and they're all in the floor by the time you get home. :pullinghair:

And, as you mentioned, some are prone to splitting open or tearing at the most inopportune time. The local supermarkets around here seem to have become really stingy with their bags as they will try to cram half a bill of groceries into one stinking bag! The worst is when they try to cram your bread in with several solid objects, thereby mashing it. Pisses me the fuck off!

I know that when I was a bagger at Kroger 20 years ago, we liked the plastic bags alot better as they were easier and faster to use than the paper bags, but yeah, the plastic bags suck a big one as a consumer.

Wait until they start charging you 10c a bag to 'save' the environment like the genius here came up with.

In the same way discouraging you from using towels in hotels is about saving the planet...

Yes. It wasn't much of a rivalry, really, as Slipknot was HUGE back then. Hell, they're still huge now.

Like 'em or not, it's hard to deny that they were the real deal: visceral.

Mushroomhead made some good albums early on though - one of the Nu Metal bands I can actually stomach.

nice HR, 'plastic sacks of death' may not last until the pre-chorus. it'd be a great performance though, because the title accurately states the outcome.

but srsly.. there are whole towns here in hippyville that are 99% placcy bag free. we really call them 'placcy bags'!

LOL. Yeah but plastic bags don't hide your face like paper bags do.

For the most part I find it to be a gimmick by bands who could not stand out from all the other shouter bands because of their un-original music that sounds just like everyone else.

When you have to come up with something like that because your music is un-original or not very good, that says a lot.

Kiss had some hits, but if it were not for their makeup, I think they would not have gotten as far as they did. Alice Cooper wore makeup and had his whole stageshow of the psychotic schtick, but he developed into a great songwriter and by the mid-70s he could have gotten rid of his stage show and been just as popular.

I saw Slipknot on Ozzfest in 2005 I think. I had seen their vids on the net, etc. and of course they were getting some press......at Ozzfest I listened to them for about 15 minutes. *yawwwn*. They sounded like so many other shouter bands it was stupid. They had nothing to offer musically that was interesting or different. So I walked away. They deserved to be on the second stage as they are not good enough to be on the main stage in my opinion.
The masks and stuff are there to impress gullible teen-agers and kids because most adults would not give them the time of day.

My 2 cents.

If any of you are fans of theirs, good for you. Just not my cup of tea. :umm:

Dude, listen to 'Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses' and I think you'll change your opinion. Musically, Slipknot sound very little like the other 'shouty' bands.

Musically, Slipknot

That doesn't make any sense!

Here it's two cents.

Claiming it's to save the planet is highly insulting to me. Unfortunately, some cashiers seem to believe that/are instructed to perpetuate that belief. Even more unfortunately, humiliating them brings little to no satisfaction & changes absolutely nothing.

Although, I think it was a world renowned, prize winning scientist that came up with the idea, Sesh.

Yeah... kinda like coming up with "revolutionary" lyrics & naming your band as Anger Towards the System... :umm:

It's like what Blackie Lawless said after he burned himself for the umpteenth time with the fire-shooting sawblade codpiece...."Ya' know.....I wouldn't have to do this shit if we wrote better songs"
