STOCKHOLM -- A Swedish man who was arrested after trying to split atoms in his kitchen said Wednesday he was only doing it as a hobby.

Richard Handl told The Associated Press that he had the radioactive elements radium, americium and uranium in his apartment in southern Sweden when police showed up and arrested him on charges of unauthorized possession of nuclear material.

The 31-year-old Handl said he had tried for months to set up a nuclear reactor at home and kept a blog about his experiments, describing how he created a small meltdown on his stove.

Only later did he realize it might not be legal and sent a question to Sweden's Radiation Authority, which answered by sending the police.

If God didn't want us to split atoms in our kitchens he would have never made them.

Big Government....Sheesh!

Talking to my pal in Sweden earlier apparently creating a reactor wasn't against the law but fortunately possession of uranium is.

Ah..... kinda like a crack pipe is legal but having the 20 rock isn't :headlights:

Yeah no doubt the law is the same in the UK and US.

Well maybe not in Virginia where you can get anything up to 5 kiloton bombs at the gun fairs as long as you can show a library card.

I know people who have been there....for a $100 bucks + - extra you can shoot a Gatling Gun outta a helicopter:)

Personally I'm a Second Amendment kinda guy....I believe it's every God given American Right [Made in China] for The People to defend themselves with whatever radioactive material they choose......Keep that shit over on the other side of the pond and "Don't Tread on Me" :beers8:

You see, that seems like an interesting hobby. Now, there's a man that can build a subatomic fire. That is interesting. What do I get, naughty router people. Sheesh!

This is what happens if it's cold and your government taxes the fuck out of booze. :)

Oh come on, if you was a girl wouldn't you find a guy that could split atoms interesting?
Basicly all I ask for is a guy that can build a fire that is noble and makes me laugh. ... splitting atoms would be like icing on a cake.

:umm: I bet he could fix a microwave oven in the stix! Useful man indeed!

Isn't there a song called radioactive lover or some such sort?

I must admit it would be annoying to lose a stove.....

Naturally, an American teenager beat this guy to the punch back in 1994. His name is David Hahn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hahn), and is the subject of a book by Ken Silverstein titled The Radioactive Boy Scout (http://www.amazon.com/Radioactive-Boy-Scout-Backyard-Nuclear/dp/037550351X). The kid really was a Boy Scout, and wound up not only contaminating himself but a good segment of his neighborhood with potentially deadly radioactive material, leading to a major EPA Superfund clean up.

(You can read a segment of the book HERE (http://www.wesjones.com/silverstein1.htm).)
