In the 1970's my parents owned some property in Newport Beach, California. My mom would take us there for a few weeks out of the summer. Newport Beach was more middle class than it is today and Orange Country was the conservative bastion of California. For some reason John Wayne lived in Newport Beach. In those days most the Hollywood types lived up in the Hollywood hills and Malibu. One of John Wayne's favorite places to eat was a place called The Crab Cooker. It's still there and I think still owned by the founder. You would see John Wayne's limo driver come in and get take out. He had the only limousine in town. One day the Duke came in to eat and he was right at the table next to us. I remember him being very nice; especially to children and I remember him looking at me and saying something the effect of how are you doing littler feller? The guy you saw in all those movies was the real John Wayne. He wasn't doing much acting, he really was that way.

That would have been cool as shit to meet John Wayne! The man is revered and worshiped almost like a god around these parts. If you call him gay around here you're liable to wind up severely hurt or even killed.

I believe John Wayne's wife was French. She had an accent when she talked. Their son Patrick was with them. I know my sisters thought he was hot.

I thought it was cool they named the Orange County airport after the Duke. It was just called the Orange Country Airport when I was a kid. My dad was doing a lot of work in Las Vegas and he would fly in and we would pick him up. Sometimes he was flying his own plane sometimes commercial. I remember they would just unload the luggage on the black tarmac. No terminal, no luggage claim, no security. Now they have a nice terminal there with a big statue of John Wayne in it.

I remember that story Nitro. You lucky fucking bastard. ;)

She was Hispanic. Pilar was her name I think.

Heck, for years his grave was unmarked because they figured people would try to steal his tombstone.

He is buried in Newport Beach.
