Rock legends REM announce split

Members of legendary US rock band REM have announced they are splitting up after 31 years.

"We have decided to call it a day as a band," the band said. "To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

The group found fame with a string of albums, notably 90s hits Out of Time and Automatic for the People.

The band's website was unavailable on Wednesday afternoon after the announcement was made.

Three of REM's albums in the 1990s went quadruple platinum in the US, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

REM's latest album, Collapse into Now, was released in March 2011. It was their 15th studio album.

The group was originally made up of singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and Bill Berry, who left the band in 1996.

"I hope our fans realise this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way," Stipe said as he announced the split.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

Admittedly, I pretty much lost interest in these guys after Bill Berry left the band. Whoever would have guessed the drummer was the most valuable player in that band? Still, it kinda sucks to see them go, if only for the great band they were at least up through the mid 1990s. Really wish they would do one final tour with Bill behind the drum kit, playing all the old stuff.

Not too bad for a little college band from Athens.
Great songwriting chops!
When "The One I Love" first hit eMpTy-V, it was one of those moments where I remember exactly what I was doing, who I was doing, and all the other things that were going on in my life.

If they hold true to their word, they could quite possibly be the only band in history to ever leave the game with their dignity intact.

R.I.P. R.E.M.

That's ashame...but it's time.

They are THE definitive alt-rock band...and managed to maintain that image even after they left I.R.S. Records for Warner Brothers. There were some who accused them of being sellouts, but the label never really stuck.

I spent many a drunken night on the air at my college radio station blasting R.E.M..

Thanks for the memories and the music boys!

Can't say I was ever a hardcore fan, but they were a great rock band.

Kinda lost interest in them around the mid-1990s, but they wrote some great stuff along the way that still resonates today.

Perhaps it's for the best, if they felt it was time to say adios; far too many aging bands hanging around and barely hanging on that should follow suit.

:amen:

I hear ya, Vengeance...

I like R.E.M., but you are spot on in that they often overstepped their bounds with the preachiness....and Stipe often came off as a condescending asshole.

One particular memory comes to mind (again, from my college days...memories of which are hazy at best due to the whole "alcoholism" thing...)I saw R.E.M. at the Mann Music Center in Philly, probably around 1988 or '89. It's an amphitheater type venue with regular seats and then open air lawn seats way in the back.

Anyway...a bunch of friends and I were out in the parking lot slamming down beers (along with the rest of the crowd) prior to the show. That in itself is a fond memory because we got busted for underage drinking by some undercover cops. Those of us who produced our I.D. were given a warning and we had all of our beer confiscated and poured out on the ground in front of us. But a couple of our asshole buddies decided to lie to the cops and say that they didn't have I.D. on them, so not only did they get their beer poured out at their feet...they also got hauled into court and ended up having their licenses suspended.

But I digress....

The thrust of the story is that not long after we got inside and the show started, Stipe started lecturing the crowd about how he was standing out on the roof of the venue before the show, watching all of us in the parking lot. He went on to to chastise all of us for the appalling number of styrofoam cups that he witnessed being used by the crowd during the "pre-game festivities". He basically then accused us of destroying the ozone layer and made us all feel like a bunch of insensitive pricks who wanted to murder Mother Nature just for the fun of it.

In my drunken stupor I think I yelled something along the lines of "I paid to hear you sing, asshole, so shut the fuck up and sing." Some nearby applauded, while others (earth types who felt like they were on the bleeding edge of the whole "green movement") looked at me with disdain.

So, the point of my story is:

R.E.M. music = GOOD

R.E.M. lectures = BAD

This news brings to mind the immortal quote offered by John Lennon when asked about the death of Elvis Presley. Lennon supposedly remarked "Elvis died when he went in the ARMY."

In this case (as FORD stated), the wheels came off the wagon when the group signed with WB and Bill Berry left the band a few years later. Still, those early I.R.S. albums hold up better today than most alleged "alternative" music, then or now.

16.09.11 Revised advert for boy (man) friend.

Having at first in humour used words like "hump" , "banana", "yam, "aubergine" and "difficult brown" when advertising to find boy (man) friend I have attracted only the type of men I might catch crabs from even purely by e mailing them, so I now wish to make a clearer advert concerning exactly what it is I seek.

1. A man not under 44. NON-NEGOTIABLE

2. Has to live in Ireland. NON-NEGOTIABLE.

3. Preferably Dublin or Wicklow but other counties will be considered due to appalling desperateness of shit-uation.

4 Has to actually be single. NON-NE-FUCKING-GOTIABLE

5. Preferably sterile. (The lady doesn't want any more pregnancies)

6. VERY physically affectionate. NON-NEGOTIABLE (the lady needs lots of affection and will reciprocate. The lady HAS a lot of affection and wishes to give it)

7. Funny. (The lady is funny)

8. Eccentric. (The lady is a looper)

9. Interested in and capable of sex at least once a day.. (If the lady feels like it).

10. Sexually must be very loving, cuddly, affectionate, sweet, funny, and also reasonably filthy. (The lady is all of the above and will absolutely reciprocate)

11. There must be a LOT of kissing before during and after love-making (The lady likes kissing).

12.. Must provide me with Fry's chocolate cream bars (NOT a euphemism for anal sex) at least once a week and do all he can to ensure the Fry's people never go out of business. (The lady loves Fry's chocolate creams. Crunchies, peanut m+ms, and chili-chocolate may be substituted if Fry's are sold out)

13. Re-iterate.. Has to be blind/mad enough to think I'm gorgeous.

14. Has tell me I'm gorgeous at least ten times a day. (The lady will reciprocate)

15. Re-iterate.. No Nigels. NON-NEGOTIABLE

16. Re-iterate.. No hair gel. Hair dryers, or general hair faffery. NON-NEGOTIABLE

17. Must be hairy. No waxed or buffed need apply. NON-NEGOTIABLE. ( bald heads are however, acceptable as the whole man looks like an erection. Especially if a tiny 'eye' is painted on top of head)

18. Must be stubbly. ABSOLUTELY NON-NE-FUCKING-GOTIABLE

19. No after-shave. This ruins the delicious smell of stubble. (The lady LOVES stubbly man-smell and beard rash)

20. Must be employed NON-NEGOTIABLE. Re-iterate.. No vehicle clampers.

21. No pierced nipples.

22 No addictions other than sex, cigarettes or coffee (the lady loves all three)

23. No jealous psycho exes NON-NEGOTIABLE (the lady has had enough of those)

24. No homo-phobes. NON-NE-FUCKING-GOTIABLE

25. No 'right-wingers' of any kind.

26. No accountants (boring)

27. No stamp collectors (flaccid)

28. No Knob-cheese.

29. Must, when lady is 'moody' or 'cross' dis-arm her with love-making. This is the secret key.

In return, the lucky man chosen will be given the vast quantities of love, affection, kisses, cuddles, sweet-nothings whispered in ears, friendship, support, encouragement, compliments, and most importantly, regular sweet and filthy, loving sex.

The lady is a woman FULL to the brim of love and affection. And un-happy at not having a man to give it to. So if u are out there please hurry. I'm lovely. U want me. U deserve me. I'm worth it. Oh.. And I smell really good too. And am a CHAMPION cuddler and giver of tenderness.

Would have been more refreshing had they done this move 15 years ago.

However, I will admit to liking a few of their tunes. They are extremely pretentious, but have written a few catchy songs. Never bought an album though. I just know the hits that we have all heard a billion times.

Yes...he's gay. Who cares?

He's always been a skinny, pasty looking dude since we got to know him back in the early 80's.

I'm not normally terribly sensitive to this type of thing, but the 2 or 3 posts about Stipe having AIDS seemed pretty juvenile and out of place. 31 years is a long time for a band to hold it together. Give Stipe and R.E.M. the credit that they're due for their career and move on.

Van Halen could tear a page or two out of R.E.M.'s book when it comes to band longevity and stability.

Was it comedian Ron White that asked "have you ever seen a vegetarian or vegan that looked healthy?"

The 22 year old supermodel doing it to be trendy doesn't count.

Stipe just needs to spend a weekend at a Roth Army backyard BBQ eating steaks. Someone needs to tell him to stop taking meat up the butt and start actually eating it.

R.E.M. CALL IT A DAY (UPDATED WITH BAND MEMBERS' COMMENTS)

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.

In their own words: The guys share their thoughts on why now.

MIKE

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'? Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

"We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this--there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

MICHAEL

"A wise man once said--'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it.

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way.

"We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

PETER

"One of the things that was always so great about being in R.E.M. was the fact that the records and the songs we wrote meant as much to our fans as they did to us. It was, and still is, important to us to do right by you. Being a part of your lives has been an unbelievable gift. Thank you.

"Mike, Michael, Bill, Bertis, and I walk away as great friends. I know I will be seeing them in the future, just as I know I will be seeing everyone who has followed us and supported us through the years. Even if it's only in the vinyl aisle of your local record store, or standing at the back of the club: watching a group of 19 year olds trying to change the world."

It's a little annoying. I mean, if there were a thread on THE SCORPIONS demise, I wouldn't jump in and start trashing them and then start making jokes about a horrible disease. I could give a shit about THE SCORPIONS, but I respect other people's tastes, for Christ's sake.

Been listening to my R.E.M. records a lot the last two days. I tell you this: for the most part, they treated their fans with a hell of a lot more respect than Van Halen ever fucking did. They also certainly knew how to be prolific and keep making music. Their last album was good.

I was never a fan, so do I get a pass for not being to upset about their breakup? I too was like "They're still together?" They did have ONE song I seem to remember as being tolerable..."Finest Hour" or something like that? Michael Stipe always came off like a pompous prick in interviews though.

There were some originals written, but only one has turned up. It was included on Zevon's Sentimental Hygiene album, which all 4 members of REM played on during it's recording and release in 1987.

One of my all-time faves, from any band.

They're breaking up? Can honestly say I couldn't give 2 shits...

And yet you cared enough to post in the thread...

Saw them on their last tour and they were really fantastic. Haven't got around to buying "Collapse Into Now" yet, but "Accelerate" was the best album they had made in years in my opinion. Kinda thought they might call it a day soon after they didn't tour for their last album. Would have been nice to have a final tour, but ho hum. Best of luck to them...and thanks for some great music...

Break up?

Um...Van Halen broke up...and broke up again...and broke up again...and here we are nearly 40 years after they formed, getting ready for a new album...and Roth and the Van Halens can't fucking stand each other...

So...we all know that they "break up" is just another reason for them to be inspired into a reunion tour in five years to try and generate interest in their music again after it's all but fucking disappeared...

Gullible motherfuckers...

A-fucking-men.

Couldn't agree more.

I don't know what's sadder; people wishing slow death on somebody simply because they don't like their music, or people thinking posting such bullshit passes as some form of wit or humour, instead of childish and pathetic...which is how it really comes across. You don't like the music? So what. What are you trying to prove by mouthing off like an attention whoring fucktard? Grow up.

I was listening the 'Green', 'Monster', 'Automatic For the People' and 'New Adventures In Hi Fi' yesterday and it really hit home to me just how good REM were. The worst thing that happened to them was success, however: they lost their edge by being accepted into the mainstream.

Working in a record shop I was always struck by the sorts of peole who bought REM records - often people who liiked Coldplay and Maroon 5. That REM became equated with that shit really baffled me.

I guess it's a price you pay for success. I always hate it when people equate Prince with the Michael Jackson/Madonna/Beyonce types too.
