When I was in Sweden they were always talking shit about the Finnish people. I finally called one guy out on it saying it was getting old and he just smiled and said they are our neighbors we love to hate. Ok. All I know was my Norwegian grandfather couldn't stand the Swedes.

A Russian Banya is very similar to a Finish sauna. The Russians like to drink vodka, go into a hotter than hell sauna. Soak elm branches in water and beat the shit out of each other with them. Drink more vodka. Eat pickles, drink the brine munch on horse radish root, smoked fish or whatever else you got. Sweat some more, drink some more and then dive off into some cold water or pour cold water over yourself. I think the Russians make more of a ritual of it than the Finns do.

Basically you end up dehydrated, beat, drunk, with the shits.

My pal was saying recently how someone in their Swedish office was saying that on a documentary there it showed how the life expectancy in Sweden was say 80 and in the worst parts of Scotland it was 55 but a little better in Iraq.

I pointed out that only in Sweden would you make a documentary to show how good something about your own country was. Everywhere else does documentaries about their problems. Sweden is like a less wild reckless version of Canada... :)

Interesting you don't mention that their socialist government, socialised free healthcare, a policy of trying to avoid if at all possible putting people in jail and a very progressive tax regime that reduces inequality and thus stress and unhappiness.

Personally I couldn't live with the horrendous booze taxes but still...

There is also some research that shows part of the reason for their high average life expectancy is that a lot more people give up smoking than in places like the US or UK. They manage this by going onto chewing tobacco which is pretty much illegal here. It's not safe but a fuck of a lot safer than cigarettes and part of their culture. I tried it once with a Swede, it was bag thing you put in your gum, odd and not entirely nice I thought.
