Yeah, he seems like a really supportive guy. He had some tweets when the "blame Val" thing came out that made it seem as though he was around a lot during Ed's "dark" days. Which can be a good or bad thing...but he's been to a lot of the concerts, nice to see an uncle being supportive that way.

I'm sure every woman that's married to an alcoholic has her husband and brother fight. I see so many similarities between Ed and Val's marriage and my own, it's amazing.

When my husband and brother fought, I jumped between them just as they were throwing punches at each other. My brother's lucky, he would have been knocked out, lol.

David Bertinelli. He has had a studio in Park City Utah for years. He actually did some photos for my parents years ago. They used to live there. I met him once and actually didn't know he was Val's brother until later on.

I just noticed Patrick Bertinelli took the photo. That's Val's other brother. David is a professional photographer. A lot of the Browning ad work and catalogs he has done the photos for.

I just noticed Patrick Bertinelli took the photo. That's Val's other brother. David is a professional photographer. A lot of the Browning ad work and catalogs he has done the photos for.

Wow, how'd you know bout the Browning part? My uncle was president of Browning for 20 years, Browning/Winchester for about a decade. Uncle Don and Dad are in Door County, WI right now and plan on fishing the Gorge area when they head back in a few weeks. He wouldn't ever bother him back in the day for VH favors but, Ted Nugent was best RnR bonus from his days in Ogden. Think I shared a funny story T.N. related from H.O.B. Strip on our old Army site. Uncle Don and Ted was oil & vinegar so his T.N. archery line was short lived. If I remember correctly David did Ektelon racquetball catalog shoots as well before they sold it off. Did you work for Browning?

All things considered, I had awesome time with my brother at the show. I wasn't able to meet up with any Roth Army members because we were late getting down to the arena. Wished they would've added at least one of the tunes that they haven't played throughout the tour, but really enjoyed HAIL. The crowd seemed to have a great time. And I had a BLAST! Keep the reviews coming and I'm getting depressed already thinking that NOLA will the last US show until 2013. Do any of you think there may be a festival in the works? Thanks for reading and good night!!!

Dave actually screamed like that, I think, more than a few times throughout the show. He was clearly 'on' last night. I noticed that Alex couldn't stop laughing in a few spots. Dave's singing was excellent. No drop outs minus a line or two. I didn't notice any signs of this nearing the end of the first leg from anyone.

Van Halen, US Airways Center, 6/16/12
By Mike Escoto Sun., Jun. 17 2012 at 9:00 AM Comments (24)

When the recently reunited Van Halen (featuring original vocalist David Lee Roth) announced it was postponing a handful of dates on its current tour, most people assumed that it was due to some conflict within the band. Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth wasted no time dismissing the theory and chalked it up to the band's biting off more than it could chew with this tour.

Fortunately for Van Halen fans in the Valley, the band's Phoenix date went down as scheduled, and if there is any animosity within the Van Halen camp, they certainly didn't display it. But, after watching the band perform Saturday night in front of a packed US Airways Center, another reason for the postponing of those tour dates seemed more likely: They're not very good.

Allow me to clarify. I'm not suggesting that Van Halen is a shitty band, because it isn't. In fact Van Halen, fronted by David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, is undeniably one of the greatest rock bands of all time. (The Gary Cherone-fronted Van Halen? Not so much.)

And it's not even that the members of the Van Halen clan aren't very good: From a technical standpoint, drummer Alex Van Halen was good and virtuoso guitarist Eddie Van Halen was amazing (the later performing a guitar solo -- surprise -- that was without question the highlight of the night), and even Eddie's son, Wolfgang (the least experienced of the crew) held his own on stage. This brings us to David Lee Roth, who sadly was the weak link of the group on Saturday evening.

To his credit, Roth was just as much the showman as he's ever been. The problem was he focused too much on the antics and not quite enough on the musicianship (which can be a big problem when, you know, Eddie Van Halen is onstage).

Any time Eddie Van Halen ripped into a guitar solo, Roth would strut around the stage, hamming it up for the audience. It was funny at first -- "Hey, it's Diamond Dave" -- but at a certain point, he just started to look awkward. Essentially, he turned into that guy who shows up at a party and just tries way too hard to impress everyone there. You wanted to say, "You're David Lee Roth. You don't have to try so hard. We already like you."

When Roth wasn't goofing, he'd engage the crowd with stories that lacked much sense, and you wondered if you were missing an inside joke. There was also a video package of Roth with his sheepdogs, and it felt strange and out of place.
Minor gripes aside (Roth's always been eccentric), all real offense came from the vocals. Roth just seemed to be all over the place. For the most part, all the songs were performed in a sing-speak style, and he had a hard time hitting the high notes and just omitted large chunks of songs for no apparent reason.

As much as I wanted to like this show I didn't. There is an inherent coolness to seeing Van Halen perform songs like "Hot For Teacher" or "Runnin' With The Devil." But a minute or two into each song, I realized that Dave was kind of fucking up the song, and the nostalgia factor just went right out the window. So if they need to postpone some dates so that they can recharge their batteries and get Roth sounding better, then I'm all for it.

I don't think anything sums up this concert better than this. On the light-rail ride home, a man in the same car as me started singing the song "Hypnotized" by Bob Welch. A woman sitting behind me yelled out, "You sing better than David Lee Roth." The sad thing is, she wasn't wrong.

Critic's Notebook:

Last Night: Van Halen and Kool & the Gang at US Airways Center

Personal Bias: I've always really liked Van Halen, more so with Roth than Hagar, so it was a pretty big disappointment I didn't like this show.

The Crowd: Mostly older couples and a few parents with their younger children.

Random Notebook Dump: Enough with the kung fu moves already, Dave.

One more thing: Kool & the Gang seem like a really weird opener for Van Halen, but they were actually really great.

And you would be devoid of taste if you didn't but did you happen to cross any live footage from the early days before putting your opinion to print. Review from the Arizona Republic's Ed Masley....much more generous. He enjoyed it. The pics they took, posted here: http://www.azcentral.com/photo/Entertainment/Music/22596

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/20120617van-halen-concert-review-phoenix-diamond-david-lee-roth.html

David Lee Roth is a lot like Bob Dylan. Not in terms of having written "Like a Rolling Stone" - because he didn't do that. More in terms of approaching the songs his fans have come to hear him sing with no regard for the original recordings, singing what he feels like singing when he feels like singing it, changing the melody, changing the phrasing, leaving whole parts of the vocal by the wayside on a whim.

There may be notes he just can't hit at 57, which is fair enough. But there are other notes he could have hit on Saturday, June 16, as he rocked what looked to be a sold-out crowd at US Airways Center with Van Halen. In fact, on more than one occasion, he sang higher notes instead -- "My love is rotten to the core" in "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," for example. That part isn't even high. But it was Saturday (except the time he shouted "yeah" instead of singing it).

Unlike Bob Dylan, though, who seems to sing his songs the way he pleases more because he doesn't feel as though he should be made to live up to the expectations of his audience, much less his critics, Diamond Dave spent his entire time on stage entertaining the audience, with his slides and his high kicks and yoga positions, his mike-stand-twirling antics, his constantly making ridiculous faces, his comic asides and rambling monologues, his hula dancing on "Tattoo" and asking a girl in the crowd "Have you already made a sex tape with that camera?" during "Romeo Delight." It almost seemed like singing was the last thing on his mind -- his "other" job, his real job being making sure that everyone who paid to see the show was duly entertained.

And here's the thing. It worked. Even Eddie Van Halen was laughing. So was Wolfgang, Eddie's kid, who's playing bass instead of Michael Anthony.

There may have been some people there who weren't as entertained by Roth's shenanigans as myself and the Van Halen family on stage. But there sure seemed to be a lot of smiling, clapping, cheering people standing up and partying like it was 1984 for the duration of the concert. And a lot of that had everything to do with Diamond Dave.

The show opened with dive-bombing whammy bar action and squealing high notes on Eddie's guitar giving way to the opening riff of the classic "Unchained" as Roth slid and twirled his way across the stage in a black rhinestone outfit waving the towel he used to wipe away his sweat throughout the night. The interaction between the mugging front man and the lead guitarist (whose solo on "Unchained," it should be noted, was amazing) seemed unforced enough to back their story that there's been no tension on this tour. They seemed like friends.

"Unchained" was followed by the unmistakable low-end throb of "Runnin' With the Devil," Roth grabbing his crotch for comic effect and delivering one verse as spoken-word advice to Wolfgang.

And then, they dipped into "A Different Kind of Truth," Van Halen's first album with Roth on vocals since the glory days of "1984," for "She's the Woman," which found the singer doing crazed flamenco dancer moves. Before the night was through, they'd returned to the new one for "Tattoo," "China Town" and "The Trouble With Never." But they knew enough to keep the focus on the classics, including such obvious highlights as "Everybody Wants Some!!," "(Oh) Pretty Woman," "You Really Got Me," "Dance the Night Away," "And the Cradle Will Rock...," "Hot for Teacher," "Beautiful Girls" and "Panama." They also did the synthesizer-driven hits from "1984," of course, performing "I'll Wait" and the set-closing "Jump" with piped-in synth parts.

The sound in US Airways Center was pretty cacophonous, making it hard to hear the vocals in spots.

Even Eddie's guitar leads didn't cut through as well as they could have at times. But the playing was tight, with Wolfgang asserting himself on bass and vocals and Alex Van Halen playing a Latin-flavored drum solo to pre-recorded orchestration (which Roth proclaimed "the most amazing goddamned drum solo I've ever heard in my life" - or words to that effect).

And then there was Eddie. If Roth brought the smiles to the party at Saturday's show, it's still Eddie who brings the musical excitement to the table, tearing off one awe-inspiring guitar solo after another. Naming highlights would be pointless. If he played it, it was somewhere in the range between greatness and brilliance.

There are those who would go to the show specifically to see him play, and of that demographic, there are those who no doubt left the concert thinking he'd be better off touring without a front man as over-the-top as Diamond Dave. But that's what made Van Halen so much bigger than, say, Yngwie Malmsteen or Steve Vai (who briefly worked with Roth post-"1984"). You get more than guitar pyrotechnics. You get a good time guarantee.

And speaking of a good time guarantee, Kool & the Gang proved an oddly appropriate fit for the opening slot, if the reaction of the crowd was any indication. They played a nine-song set that moved from strength to strength, with their saxophone solos and thumping bass grooves, ending with a four-song power jam of "Jungle Boogie," "Ladies' Night," "Get Down On It" and "Celebration."

Holy shit Dave's calves looked good, man you knew it was going to be a great show.

The lack of the constant scarf is a good sign he is feeling good. Seems to be gaining some strength. Looking forward to New Orleans

The republic's review is pretty fair I think. Didn't give Dave a free pass but stated what we all know, it just fucking works.

Concert review: Phoenix crowd still hot for Van Halen

Ted Hansen
Mesa Classic Rock Music Examiner

Many fathers envision the day when their son is old enough to join them in the family business. Getting the chance to work side by side with their offspring can be a source of pride. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen must be one pretty proud papa as he got to work alongside his son, bass player Wolfgang, as Van Halen performed a well-received, two hour set, to a sold out crowd at the US Airways Center on Saturday night, June 16, 2012. Throw in Wolfgang’s uncle Alex on drums and everyone’s adopted, depraved uncle David Lee Roth on vocals and it was an appropriate family gathering for a Father’s Day Eve.

The male bonding experience was evident by the bare bones stage. No ladies touch was present with a set that had two sets of 5150 amplifiers, two platforms, one for Alex’s drum kit and one where Wolfgang would find occasional solace, a pair of microphones on opposite sides of the stage for Eddie and Wolfgang when needed and a parquet dance floor placed in the middle so that Roth could soft shoe his way throughout songs.

Important to all male indoor experiences is a big screen television and the Van Halen family get together didn’t disappoint. The video screen in use this evening, located in the back part of the stage, was as David Lee Roth mentioned, the size screen you would see at a drive-in movie theater. For those in Wolfgang’s age group, that would be IMAX size. With a projection screen that size there wasn’t a bad seat in the house.

Eddie Van Halen’s bombastic opening chords to “Unchained” signaled the band’s arrival on stage and immediately the crowd was up on its feet and clapping along. The unmistakable pop of Alex’s drums accompanied by the younger Van Halen’s bass playing complemented Eddie nicely, invoking thoughts of a Van Halen of thirty plus years ago.

With Wolfgang’s opening bass to “Runnin’ With the Devil,” along with his high octave, on pitch harmonies throughout the night, Wolfgang proved to be a solid addition to the band. Instrumentally, Van Halen hasn’t sounded this good live in many, many years.

But after the show, I heard many audience members mutter, and I’m paraphrasing here, why did Van Halen pick David Lee Roth to replace David Lee Roth? Yes, Diamond Dave still has that million dollar carnival barker’s smile and charm that would make you end up buying him a car even if he was the car salesman. He shuffled and danced on his parquet floor and could even deliver on occasion his patented high leg kick. As an entertainer, age may have caused Roth to have lost a step, but he’s only replaced it with new steps. Watch him twirl a mike stand or two and he reminds you of a marching band leader gone wild. He still is captivating as a front man.

No, it wasn’t his antics or now, at age fifty seven, his somewhat creepy sounding flirting with the audience females (he is after all, our accepted depraved uncle) that bothered some. It was his vocals. Although no one else should be singing “Everybody Wants Some,” “Hot for Teacher,” or the Van Halen version of “Pretty Woman,” (which was Dave’s best song of the night), there were missed verses, high notes never reached and off meter timing. During “You Really Got Me,” he watched up close as Eddie and Wolfgang nailed the backing harmonies and declined to join in. To some, it was just Dave being Dave. To others, they expected more.

Perhaps this is why, despite the fact that ninety percent of the audience, from the front row to the rafters, remained standing throughout the entire show, yet seldom shot pumped fists into the air or feverishly clapped along to every song. To them, there was plenty to embrace about Van Halen but something was missing as well.

The evening’s set list was expectedly comprised of some new material off of their latest CD “A Different Kind of Truth,” and a healthy dose of old Van Halen. Even with a new song such as “Tattoo,” Eddie Van Halen showed why he is a guitar god with his effortless, yet impressive solos. With the enormous video screen behind the stage providing close ups of Eddie’s fingers during his seven minute guitar solo towards the end of the show, one couldn’t help but be in awe as to his creativity.

Roth provided the other band members a break when he took to the stage alone, first explaining, via video behind him, of his herding dog life and then breaking into “Ice Cream Man.” Well rested, the Van Halens joined in for the frenzied end to the song and continued on the same pace with “Panama.”

Without need to leave the stage only to return for one last expected encore, Van Halen remained and finished up with a rousing version of “Jump.” Confetti blew into the air and then rained down onto the crowd and just like any good get together, it was time for somebody else to clean up the mess made by the Van Halen clan. But they’re all invited back next year, even Uncle Dave.

Set List: Unchained | Runnin’ With The Devil | She’s The Woman | Romeo Delight | Tattoo | Everybody Wants Some | Somebody Get Me A Doctor | China Town | Hear About It Later | Oh, Pretty Woman | Alex Van Halen Drum Solo | You Really Got Me | The Trouble With Never | Dance The Night Away | I’ll Wait | And The Cradle Will Rock | Hot For Teacher | Women In Love | Beautiful Girls | Ice Cream Man | Panama | Eddie Van Halen Guitar Solo | Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love | Jump

There are more screams on this show than all the others combined...

:killer:

Funny I didn't see your post until I scrolled down but was thinking the same thing . Dave was in rare form (at least for this tour on E.B.W.S.) I think his voice might not be back all the way yet, but the Roth we all love is !! Think you might be in for a great show Elvis. Saw them a month ago. Dave was good & the band was scary good !

Despite the dust storm, it was still 100+ for the high, and the arena was fucking warm inside. No scarf needed for Dave.

Just got off the phone with my 80s drummer's kid (now teching for Tesla), who went to this show since he was in town and had the night off...he was raving about how good they were ("It was amazing. The band was killer, and Dave was on point. SO glad I went!" ). Good to see the next generation's gonna have some rabid VH fans! :baaa:

I absofuckingfuckingfuckinglutely love that band!!! They are coming to Biloxi in July and I've got tickets. Right now they are doing a cool thing where you can go online and reserve (pay for) a fully mixed and mastered on the fly copy of that night's show and pick it up after the show.
