Well, we're here. Mrs TommyV, Big Sister and the Rock N Roll Kid are here with me.

It's fucking hotter than hell (do I need to pay Gene?) and it's great. We're at the Tropicana and it's a fine establishment. We went for a walk today and drinks are pricey. Gonna need to poke around some more.

There's a store called M & M World about two doors up from the MGM Grand. Four floors of shit related to the product...t-shirts, glassware, candy assortments, etc. I looked for the special Van Halen assortment and couldnt find it. The RnR Kid wouldn't let me ask for it. Major marketing opportunity missed, if you ask me.

We did take a picture of a VH poster at the venue, but we don't have any way to post it from here. Maybe later...

There's a movie and music memorabilia store in the shops at Caesar's Palace. A signed and nicely framed coy of VH II was 1495. A signed guitar with Dave, Eddie, Alex and Mike was 3495 or something. It was really nice, except the guitar was stamped with the rings logo. Pass.

The female contingent is going to see Dancing With The Stars tonight. I'm going drinking somewhere.

Nothing but relaxing tomorrow as we save our strength for the mighty Van Halen!

I don't know where to begin.....

Been drinking since about noon. Mac King was fucking hilarious. Went to BB Kings for a great dinner and more beer.

Made our way over to see Drew Carey, found ourselves in row two and orderered a bucket of beer. Intro was some guy running around on stage to Hot For Teacher. The whole three something minutes..

Then it got really fucked up and I found myself on stage with Drew Carey. Not even going try to explain how that went..

We did hear Jump and a couple of other VH references during the show.

Show ended, took the family back to the Tropicana and headed to the House Of Blues for Steel Panther. They were introduced by my new BFF Drew Carey. SP did give us a blistering RWTD. This was a really weird and fucked up night.

Not even going to try to explain this night..what happens in Vegas...

You see the little quote under my avatar here? Same 1 since day 1 here. One of the greatest songs of all times! I swear whenever it comes on my cd player my foot gets really heavy & I drive like Mad Max. RAWR!!!!

VH wins of course. But the songs are both quite groovy & speeding ticket worthy.

You are right. Very similar formula. I remember Ed was on an AC-DC kick for a bit. I believe Ed said the Panama music was influenced from them too.

Here's what I made out from that: "Where you been hiding [unintelligible]? Wooh! Put the camera on her. Put the camera on her, why it's right behind you dumbass, right behind you. No, no he's totally missing it, that's why he's on the [unintelligble]--there you go!"

I'll tell you honestly I wouldn't want to work for Dave. Maybe some of these people really are chimp-stupid but Dave has zero patience. Also I don't think it's doing the show any favors to be having a public argument with a crew member or making it a point to embarrass him.

It's the same reason they had a "Happy New Year's" message on their website (that I'm sure wasn't written by any of them) dated 2009, that stayed up there well through 2011.

They don't care, they're not organized, and I'm sure they had loads of these shirts already printed and they're NOT giving them away to kids in Nicaragua until they absolutely have to.

I'm still trying to figure out Dave's temper tantrums on this tour. I've watched a lot of the 2007-08 tour footage in recent years and I don't recall even one outburst by Dave towards a roadie. On this tour, he's blasting one on almost every gig !!

I've speculated that maybe it's just Dave acting like a rock legend bad ass --- but I'm starting to think he has a very caustic relationship with this road crew and it's not getting better.

It's not really in Dave's nature to belittle the roadies in front of an audience --- leave that immature BS up to true assholes like Gene Simmons or Axl Rose.

My gut feeling tells me this road crew just doesn't get along with Dave and often ignores his orders --- and Dave gets frustrated because he wants a tightly-scripted show to maintain quality control. I think he's lost patience with the roadies and because he can't fire them until 11pm on June 26 his only recourse is to lash out at them during the shows. I've had the experience of being "the boss" in charge of lazy, unmotivated dipshits who only wanna collect their paychecks and go home so I can empathize with Dave. However, I think these public insults during gigs is rubbing some fans the wrong way and may hurt ticket sales for the subsequent legs.

The only solution seems to be fire this crew and hire a new one once the tour resumes --- or maybe Dave needs to attend anger management classes during his summer break LOL.

Knowing how eclectic Daves interests are I bet he has already done a stint teaching one of these classes.

It's really perplexing because Dave rarely gets unhinged during a show ---- in the past it's always been part of his shtick to "fuck your girlfriend, pal" or "throw your girlfriend onstage instead, asshole".

But when Dave stops mid-song to berate a roadie about blowers or a shitty headset ---- there's no shtick involved ---- he's just pissed off. He's becoming a grumpy old fart !!

Let's just hope VH gets a more professional road crew before the next leg ---- and Dave finds peace of mind running Mike and Rusty ragged until their little doggy legs fall off.

Concert review: Van Halen at MGM Grand

Josh Bell - Mon, May 28, 2012 (2:30 p.m.)

When Van Halen announced the indefinite postponement of more than 30 dates on its current tour, rumors started flying that the members were fighting and that the reunion with singer David Lee Roth was about to fall apart. But if Roth and Van Halen brothers Eddie and Alex are squabbling behind the scenes, there was no evidence of it onstage at the band’s Sunday-night concert at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Roth and the Van Halens (including Eddie’s son Wolfgang, who replaced original bassist Michael Anthony several years ago) seemed to get along just fine, smiling and goofing around with each other while running through two hours of Roth-era Van Halen hits, along with a few obscurities and songs from recent Roth-fronted album A Different Kind of Truth.

Eddie Van Halen matched up to his living-legend status on the guitar, and his 10-minute solo was easily the highlight of the show. That was only partially because he’s such a guitar virtuoso; while Eddie and his brother sounded great during the rest of the concert (and Wolfgang is a perfectly capable bassist), Roth’s vocals were consistently the weak link. Roth has never been an amazing singer, but he often sounded like he wasn’t even trying, half-heartedly talk-singing through songs like “Runnin' With the Devil,” “Tattoo” and “You Really Got Me.” On that last one, Roth babbled out only about half the lyrics, turning one of the band’s most popular hits into the low point of the show.

“My role is largely ceremonial,” Roth joked at one point, but he did behave more like a cheesy master of ceremonies than a rock singer. His jerky dance moves have become less endearing, and he led into “Ice Cream Man” with a long, rambling speech about his dogs that turned into an old Borscht-belt joke. Roth’s cheesiness is part of his appeal, and the audience mostly ate it up. But the goodwill built up by corny jokes couldn’t compensate for the dreadful harmonies during “Dance the Night Away,” or any of the other bum notes. The Van Halen clan is still a musical powerhouse, but their frontman needs to focus a little more on singing and a little less on showmanship.

Setlist:
“Unchained”
“Runnin’ With the Devil”
“She’s the Woman”
“The Full Bug”
“Tattoo”
“Everybody Wants Some!!”
“Somebody Get Me a Doctor”
“China Town”
“Hear About It Later”
“(Oh) Pretty Woman”
Drum solo
“You Really Got Me”
“The Trouble With Never”
“Dance the Night Away”
“I’ll Wait”
“And the Cradle Will Rock…”
“Hot for Teacher”
“Women in Love…”
“Beautiful Girls”

“Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love”

Back at the Tropicana, a great show tonight.

Setlist included Full Bug, HAIL, Women In Love and Cradle along with the usual standards.

Met up with Mr and Mrs Guwapo before the show, Pete's Brother paid a visit to my section to say Hi. We were the only three Army folks there, I believe.

I hate fuckers who wear the rings logo.

I've got some pics and will post them upon my return to the homeland.

I must say this has been an exhausting 4 days. Body is still on eastern time, but I've been partying on Vegas time. Good times!

Lusty Roth, Van Halen show no shortage of staying power

BY JASON BRACELIN

A pheromone in tight, sparkly pants, David Lee Roth smiled like he was auditioning for an Aquafresh commercial when he spotted a woman in the crowd snapping a shot of him on her cellphone.

"Take my picture, hot stuff," the Van Halen singer instructed, freezing himself in place, one of the few times his movements ceased over the course of a two-hour show.

"Does that thing do video?" he wondered. "I made my first sex tape in 1982. I've slept with every good lookin' woman with two legs in her pants."

He then noted that he had also once bedded an amputee.

A stranger to the act of blushing, Roth has been giving lust-lacquered voice to the male id for more than four decades now.

It's what's made Van Halen's hard-rock histrionics ageless: When will the pursuit of sex ever become a forgotten act?

Some time around never.

As such, the pursuit demands a suitable soundtrack, right?

Providing as much has kept Van Halen in business, and business remains booming judging by the packed house Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden.

The reason why this band still sells out arenas is the reason why people continue to board roller coasters: Their appeal is thoroughly sensate and almost completely devoid of subtext.

Van Halen is all about in-the-moment thrills, and they continue to excel at providing them.

For his part, Roth leads by example, working the stage hard, undulating with the perpetual jiggle of a dashboard hula girl, riding his mic stand like Major Kong astride the atom bomb in "Dr. Stangelove."

He can still hit the high notes, but he does so selectively.

He paces himself, picking his spots, delivering the verses with less gusto on "I'll Wait" and "Runnin' with the Devil," which was more of a leisurely stroll with ol' Beelzebub.

Forever chattering like a beat poet of raunch, Roth frequently ad-libbed lines in songs, though mostly played it straight when it came to the four new numbers the band performed from their latest disc, "A Different Kind of Truth," their first with Roth in 28 years.

Though tunes such as "Chinatown" and "She's the Woman" might have been released earlier this year, they registered with vintage Van Halen bombast, all serrated guitar riffs, extraterrestrial soloing, double bass drumming that approximated the rumble of stampeding livestock and the band's distinctive harmonized backing vocals, handled in large part by big-shouldered bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, whose burly physique matches the heft of the rhythms he plays.

Those touchstones were alive in the many Van Halen jukebox staples they aired on this night as well. Beer-in-the-air anthems such as "Hot for Teacher," "Cradle Will Rock" and "Panama" also rang out like battle cries in a war against chastity and understatement.

There were some lesser-known album cuts played ("The Full Bug" and "Hear About It Later" from "Diver Down" and "Fair Warning," respectively), but mostly, this night was about serving up large, gooey portions of what could be considered hard-rock comfort food.

Clearly, the band reveled in the fact that they could still do it with the requisite energy and aplomb of old even with three-fourths of the group in their 50s.

Toward the end of the show, Roth hunched his shoulders over, gripping an imaginary walker as if he needed help with his movements, then shook his head "no" and did the splits.

Frequently, he'd pause to admire one of his many spinning leg kicks, projected in slow-motion replay on the massive video screen that served as the backdrop to the stage.

"I'd like to think that you're a better person after a Van Halen show," he said at one point, his words as outsized as his motions.

Maybe so, Mr. Roth, but the true fun of a Van Halen gig is that thinking is, well, an afterthought.

:flame:

Maybe it's a product of who's really at the helm with the band and the shows... Wolfgang Van Halen.

Like a 3 year old adolescent, low in the family pecking order... all Dave can do is boss around the dog and the cat and put them into time-out to throw his muscle around...

I sure hope the postponement is for Dave to have something done with his vocal cords...
