I want to go to both Chicago and Rosemont, but my finances dictate that I chose one, so I'll be at this one.

Rosemont is only a few miles away, and a wayyyyy better venue. I caught them here the day after my birthday last time around, and you can see from the YouTube clips, they laid down a shit-hot performance.

If anyone else is catching this one, hit me up and we'll set this motherfucker off.

isn't there a Sheraton or something across from the arena? back in the mid-90's the place i worked at had a machine built over there on Mannheim Rd, and we stayed right by the arena. i remember driving by it and thinking how many times i'd seen "Rosemont Horizon" on the old concert dates rundown on MTV. not far from O'Hare, too.

I was looking at Section 1 at the Rosemont show. TicketBastard shows the rows go all the way across the floor with no breaks and there are 50 seats in a row. Does this mean if you are in seat 25 – you have to climb over 25 people (either direction you go) to get a beer/take a piss?

I see at other venues, there are aisle ways that go right up to the front of the stage – that effectively breaks the front row section into three smaller sections. However, according to TicketBastard’s website – that doesn't appear to be the case at the Chicago Rosemont show.

Just tore this out of the latest Chicago weekend events section of the Onion:
Van Halen
It seems like Eddie Van Halen just can't get along with everyone in his band at the same time. His long-discussed reunion with original singer David Lee Roth took years and a couple of highly publicized false starts to actually come together, but in the meantime, Eddie forced out founding bassist Michael Anthony in favor of his son, Wolfgang. The band's new recorded, A Different Kind of Truth, might feature an abysmal lead single, "Tattoo", but it's surprisingly solid. New material or not though, the return of Diamond Dave is worth flicking your lighter on from the cheap seats, so strap in and prepare to hear "Panama" the way God intended it to be heard, except for the bass and backing vocals.

Please tell your kids to grow up smart and become doctors and engineers and scientists --- we already have enough "liberal arts" wanks writing useless garbage on the Interwebs.

Back at the hotel. Gotta early meeting, so i'll be brief.

Packed house. I picked up two tickets yesterday about 50 yards off stage right. $165 tickets face...for only $80. Thank you stubhub.

Show was good...Allstate looked pretty full. Band sounded good...Dave did do the blower bit. He sounded like shit on a couple of songs, most notably Chinatown.

Either Eddie became an Academy Award winning actor or he's having a lot of fun on this tour. A lot of smiling and laughing.

Love the simpler stage setup. The big screen was sweet.

Glad I went. Bought a shirt and a can coozy for opening day this week. Sucks it was on a Sunday and that I'm here for work tomorrow. One beer isn't enough at a VH concert.

BTW - got a lot of complements on the Roth n Roll on my shirt.

One last thing - will people STOP recording every god damn thing at a concert. You're never going to go back and watch a shitty video taken from your phone/camera. Enjoy the damn moment.

Just got back from the show. Make by brother where a Roth Army shirt. I went with an EEAS tour shirt I've been saving for this day to show my solidarity with DLR and got stopped by three people asking about it. My bro took a cigarette break after Kool and was there with 2 shits with box seats who were talking about how DLR sucked and they need Sammy back. Then I got on my bro about not taking those two down. Anyway, bro who is only a casual VH fan said his impression of the show is that Dave and Ed seemed very happy and enjoying one another, particularly during the scatting. I haven't memorized the set lists posted from previous shows so I can't say how they differed. Still would have liked Stay Frosty and B&F, but maybe next tour...Some people in front of me got up to get a beer during Chinatown and came back 4 songs later. Sorry for $160 or whatever a ticket, fuck the beer and stay put. Got to agree, tired of all the cell phones taking pix and blocking the view. Liked the simple stage and that fact the band walked out without an announcement or fanfare. Noticed the crowd got a little less enthusiastic during the new songs. Bro said he noticed DLR's timing often off, but who really cares. And Wolfie's backing vocals quit clear. Bro commented he thought we was a good bassplayer.

Well...I said it in other threads but I might as well say it here too. Dave sounds like he just can't keep up with China Town. There are moments when the band just gets way out in front of him and it sounds like he's struggling to keep the pace.

I'm not sure that HBSD would be the way to go either. Those are some pretty rapid fire lyrics, and I fear it might just exacerbate the problem.

Maybe give it a go...but if it doesn't work the first time around just dump it.

What baffles me is how good other songs sound.

Dave pulls off "I'll Wait" pretty fucking good every time around, although his voice often cracks during the chorus when he reaches up for "I'lll Wait", and "Noooo Way..."

I was so thrilled to hear I'll Wait. It's been one on my favorites since 10th. grade. I had to play it every morning before I went to school. I can still remember my poor dad trying to get some sleep from working all night telling me to lower the stereo in the morning. I finally had to quit jamming in the AM, I did feel sorry for him. My dad is a saint I swear! He even drove me to the show on friday, something he always did for us when we were kids. Some things never change!

The new material, in general, is not sounding all that great live. The possible exception is 'She's The Woman'.

'Chinatown' is a little too busy......

04-02-2012, 08:32 AM
Comparatively speaking, I think Dave is going through what Mickey Mantle went through in '68. Shots that would almost clear the park began falling shy of the warning track. I think Dave probably has a good ten more years of recording some great music, but I think the sun is setting a bit on his live gig. I hope the band sees the actual world on this tour because their work pace dictates the next tour would be somewhere around 2016.

STW does sound good live --- consistently good --- so they need to keep it.

I agree that "Chinatown" needs to go. Dave is struggling too much with it.

I would love to see them bring out "Big River".

Beats Workin, although a great song would not be a good choice for the live set at the moment. This ones got some of the highest vocal work on the album all through the verses. If everybody wants him to stay in a low register this one is out.

Bullethead, yes. Beats Workin is supremely out of his range right about now. I think for fun, they should work in She's My Machine. I know, never happen, but would work and kick ass at the same time.

They have a 9 day break starting today... should give Dave a break to rest the pipes.

Musically China Town is great... but it's a tough one vocally due to the higher register and pace. I'd rather they played Stay Frosty instead...

Hoping our friend at DDE uses this break to send a few more exclusives our way... it would be cool to see a bit of the behind the scenes on the tour like pre-show at MSG or the band just clowning around between gigs.

Oh brother, Dave has his shtick and you have yours.

I was there last night....the place was jam packed, not 1 empty seat. Everyone was on their feet the whole show. I was surrounded by people between ages 13-50 (many 20-somethings) and everyone other person was buying a shirt. Dave was funny, sounded fine, and was coughing his ass off the whole night. Yet, he brought the house down. If VH is done after this....they will still be going out on top. Trust me....I'm an expert!!!!

Agreed, Chinatown in AC was bad...rumor has it that they've sound checked HBSD...but obviously ,it's yet to make an appearance in the set list...I chose that because out of all the new songs, it has the lowest tone needed...I dunno, your point about I'll wait, Woman in Love, GGB, even Outta Love Again is right, he's nailed them...I dont get why Chinatown is coming off so bad...

I think "Girl Gone Bad" needs to have a permanent spot on the set list.

Not only is it a fan favorite ---- but there's relatively few lead vocals and it would give Dave a nice rest for the pipes.

Agreed. Their tour schedule is pretty jammed. And if I'm correct there hasn't any big gaps between gigs so far. I got faith.

So just shut the F@#K up and go see a show.It may be the last time you see CVH in your life time!!!!! THAT IS WHY A PAID UP THE ASS FROM TICKETBASTERS TO GO... IT MAY BE THE LAST TIME!!!!!!!:lala:

yea i agree that last nights show might have been the best van halen show i have ever seen...i have seen a Dave lineup over 10 times now dating back to 1979. Dave was candid, funny, told stories, did multiple kicks and splits on the mic stand. Hes not ready to thrown in the towel just yet. At one point he looked at the crowd...and made a mime as to a walker for old people, and then threw it in the air as to say "im not ready to be done yet motherfuckers" The band was as tight as i have ever heard ...Ed played masterful... and wolfie and Al were rock solid as usual. Dave did do the blower bit again...and he was noticeably coughing alot for the first 5-6 songs...that was around the time the blower comment came again.

He said the blower was making them sound hoarse ( he did say them and not me)...he said were not hoarse, its too fucking cold in here, turn the heat up! we been practicing this shit for 6 months!!....he did seem to sound better after that, and didnt cough as much, but was stilll doing it throughout the show....but all in all it was a great show !!! these guys are still bringing it big time....Ed smiled the whole night again...i think he might really be happy? could it be true?

Maybe there is something with the blower thing after all. Every singer I have jammed with always bitches about running a fan in the jam room. I always just thought they were being crybaby pussies.

I went to the show last night, at times it was spot on. Eddie was sounding great, Al and Wolfie rounded out the bottom end and Dave was entertaining. The only issue I have is when Dave goes into high register mode. He has that range in short bursts, they need to drop China Town period. I think they could pull off hbsd, while the rapid fire delivery might tax Dave it doesn't climb up the range ladder to tax his pipes. I also would have liked to have heard Mean Streets over Pretty Woman. The treats for me where outta love, women in love and the full bug. Overall a very solid performance just wanted a bit more !!!!!!

To see a band that close that you have been a fan of from 1978 to now is what was life changing. The only thing between me and guitar hero Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth was air.:hail:

Well yes, majority are crybaby pussies... plus it's an ego thing. Whiny cunts just can't stand sharing a room with anything that can blow or suck the air out of a room better than they can...

Hmmmm. Well I can only hope I wasn't considered "whiny cunt" material back in my small time gig days, but I will say that I would've loved an electric fan. Small clubs with small stages means if your 6 feet tall, that puts you about 2 or 3 feet from the stage lights. I remember it being so friggin hot, that my throat would feel like a cracked Arizona. The more H2O you drank, the faster you dry out. Ya couldn't win. Atleast the guy with LGD didn't have to worry about his precious amp over heating!

Not that he was rock-n-roll, but the situation with Sinatra was similar. He was still performing way past his prime and the word was not to go see him unless you just really loved Sinatra and were not expecting him to sound like he did at his peak. Plus he forgot the words a lot too !

It's not schtick. It was chilly with the air circulating up front. Dave went off stage, then they turned the ventilation off and it was a noticeable difference.

While there was a bit of a breeze on the floor, it would have been simple enuff for someone to check it out before the show or for DLR to go over to the side of the stage to tell them to shut it off. Instead, he makes a production of it seemingly every show so it’s got to be part of the act—that or someone really needs to be kicked off the road crew.

Is it possible that the blower issue has to be handed off to union folks, and they are just used to having it on for shows?

I would think the building crew is in charge of the building heat. Hey Dave tell them to shut it off before the show !! Hope the break helps his voice rest.

STW does sound good live --- consistently good --- so they need to keep it.

I agree that "Chinatown" needs to go. Dave is struggling too much with it.

I would love to see them bring out "Big River".

YES! Big River should be in the set. Would love for them to add a real encore after Jump by having them come back out again for Big River.

Is it possible that the blower issue has to be handed off to union folks, and they are just used to having it on for shows?

Maybe for an older venue there's manual controls. Most modern arenas have automated climate control systems. There's various sensors throughout and a central control unit that balances heat/cooling to maintain a set temperature throughout the facility.

With the stage area packed with a ton of electronics and all of those heat producing lighting rigs... odds are the automated control systems are working over-time to maintain that section of the venue at it's desired temperature. Thus the dreaded, evil blowers...

For these automated systems it's not a matter of someone going and adjusting a thermostat or flipping a switch... some one has to go to the control center and override the programmed settings for that specific area. That may or may not be a quick fix if the building maintenance staff are not on-site or the guy with the password to access the main computer controls...

Now if it's blowers built into the stage setup... then it's a whole different matter and whoever is managing the road crew needs to walk bow-legged for a bit until resolved. I still say it's more schtick than anything... but who knows..?
