My bro is gonna get me a single this weekend, so I should be rollin' solo on 2-22. We should meet up beforehand and trade war stories... You might end up bein' the first RothArmy member I get to meet in person!

Got my ticket today. I'll be downtown around 530 or 600 that night. There is a bar called Coach's Tavern just caddy-cornered from the fieldhouse. Anyone going to the show, hit me on IM as the date gets closer and we can work out details.

I'm sure there are a bunch of VH fans in South Bend. Most are probably going to Chicago though. You can craigslist it or wait till DOS and sell it outside. We'll be at Coach's Tavern across the street before the show. Join us!

I bought several sets of tickets as I used to be involved in the secondary market and when I heard VH was touring again, I figured I would grab a bunch and then, depending where I was at the time, I would be covered ... but now it looks like I will not be making this show, so I have two tix that are available -- I am not a scalper, so you won't be paying an arm or a leg for these tix. Just PM or email me at swollengoat999@gmail.com and I will send you specifics and we can work out a price that's fair for fellow fans of DLR/VH.

Thanks for letting me post about availability.

To everyone with tix and already going -- have a blast!

Best,

GS

I'm stoked!! I'm cool with throwing down beers anywhere, but here is my catch. My daughter, who doesn't turn 21 for three months is going to the show with me. Someone told me that you can't get into Coaches unless you are 21. I called Coaches and asked and they said you had to be twenty one to enter. I don't know if they card at the door or not but she won't be drinking. I know we can get a burger/beers at Scotty's Brewhouse. I will be with 6-10 people.

I'm good with about anywhere, but I have to meet the dudes I'm rolling with at Coaches. Then we can probably roll to Scotty's. I really think your daughter would have no trouble at Coaches though. Sending PM.

All of these classics would truly be great additions the the set, but I can't help but think they should take a whack at Honeybabysweetiedoll. Not something Dave should have trouble with live and the 3 twins would rip shit up.

LOL... when you sneak in some 151 or or liquor, mixing it with a coke gives you a powerful mixed drink... and we always had smoke as well, in pipes with lids, so you could sneak a hit and have it put away before anyone figured it out (if security even cared, which usually they didnt)

They seemed looser tonight, maybe the Indiana hometown vibe was that extra ingredient. Girl Gone Bad was dead nuts, and I gotta say Women in Love is just a killer live song.

Classic Van Halen largely present during Fieldhouse show
5:35 AM, Feb. 23, 2012 |

Written by
David Lindquist

Within the lyrics of new Van Halen song "The Trouble with Never," David Lee Roth sings that "selective amnesia is only a heartbeat away."

Roth expanded this excerpt of "Never" during Wednesday's performance at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, where he characterized selective amnesia as a useful coping mechanism.

It turns out that selective amnesia may be the best way to assess the show -- stop No. 3 on a tour to promote "A Different Kind of Truth," the first Van Halen album since 1984 to feature Roth on lead vocals.

The disjointed "Never" and too-busy "China Town" unfolded as "Truth" tracks to forget. But longtime fans could grasp current single "Tattoo" and "Truth" selection "She's the Woman" as electrifying reminders of the band's power-meets-melody legacy.

Ageless guitar wonder Eddie Van Halen delivered "keeper" moments throughout the two-hour performance, while drummer Alex Van Halen (Eddie's brother) and bass player Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's son) made a rock-steady rhythm section.

Roth, who toured with Van Halen in 2007 after decades of estrangement, offered focused effort on "She's the Woman."

But he lost the plot on the program's next song, 1980's "Romeo Delight."

At his most eccentric, Roth shares traits with 1970s-era Elvis Presley: dropped lyrics, martial-arts poses and an affection for handguns (in Roth's case, one is tattooed on his derrière).

When Roth inspires, he's suggestive of James Cagney portraying George Cohan in the 1942 film" Yankee Doodle Dandy" -- strutting purposefully while singing "Panama" and "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" as esteemed anthems of the Sunset Strip.

Another of these, "Dance the Night Away," taxed the high end of Roth's vocal range and made him appear to be a 57-year-old man out of his element.

Yet precisely when the show needed age-appropriate context and some heart, Roth sang "Ice Cream Man" as an unplugged solo number and he shared childhood memories of Bloomington and New Castle, Ind.

Roth's substantial role actually comes as somewhat of a surprise when compared to the 2007 tour, when Eddie Van Halen towered above his band mates.

This time around, Eddie is working hard with Wolfgang to tag-team high vocal harmonies (an important job handled by former bass player Michael Anthony from 1974 to 2006).

Many of Eddie's guitar highlights were stop-on-a-dime transitions from sonic aggression to subtle interludes.

And a brutal clinic in six-string mastery arrived with "Girl Gone Bad," an often-overlooked gem from the album "1984."

Kool & the Gang, perceived my many to be a mismatched supporting act on this tour, played a well-received selection of hits.

The 11-man crew thrived during the rock of "Emergency," the pop of "Get Down on It" and the funk of "Hollywood Swinging."

No disrespect to anyone, but this is live and how it is in that moment for the band. It shouldn't sound exactly like the album because the dynamics are different at that time. Dave has always been about the moment. If he was to try and come out and sing the songs word for word and be exact like on the album, then it would come off as generic as the Red Round fatass Spammy. Yes, the years haven't been as kind to Dave's voice, but It's really about delivering the vibe of the song to the crowd and Dave does that in the most stellar way.

Watching a camera phone YouTube and being there are two completely different things.

So by your "logic" you shouldn't like Van Halen or DLR at all......Dave's always sang pitch perfect all the way up to this tour:headlights:

Just because you're a miserable cunt doesn't mean you have to shit on everyone else's parade.

I suggest you get back on your meds, hick!

Mabye Dave is under the weather, or just out of practice...

He should have the kinks worked out by June...

..and you need to shut the fuck up because you never have a fucking point...

I know this because I watched the youtubes...

Dave fucking butchered Hear About It Later, period!

Edward obviously busted his ass re-learning these classic songs and Dave fucking ruins it by going all over the place and talking through it with his bullshit...

He's more worried about his fucking hula moves than singing the fucking song...

Dave fucking RUINED IT!

Asshole...

No way.

I think he was between 8.23 and 8.44% better on the last tour but you have to allow for all the new material he has to sing on this one.

Last tour was mainly the stuff he head been doing solo for many Summers.

Bullshit, research boy!

Dave's singing his ass off so far and guess what.....it takes a few shows to get your tour legs.

That's why a ton of bands start their tours outside the US to work the kinks out before hitting their home market.

Let's also not forget, that back in those early years, they were a touring band for almost a solid 6 yrs. You just can't compare that stuff to today. While yes, the music is pretty spot on, Dave's instrument is his voice and what's left of his on stage swagger, which can't even be compared to what he was doing way back then. I honestly believe in 07/08, he tried to recapture what he was back in his youth and it may have took a toll on his voice and such afterwards. I mean, Dave is always about going forward with himself and this is who he is right now. The hula stuff and sliding must be what he can do right now as well. None of us really know what's going on personally behind the scenes with these guys. Look at the headset. Yes, it's something he's never done, but he is also almost 60 yrs old and may have arthritis in both elbows or shoulders that may be preventing him from holding a mic for a solid 2 hrs, with out feeling like someone is cutting his arms off, who the fuck knows. For what they are doing every other night at this time in their career, and just blowing up every show and giving it everything they got, it's still miles high above everyone else and a off the planet stellar production.

I hear ya MM...

It's just some of the shit sandwich eaters around here are either too drunk, too stupid or whatever...maybe they love the taste of Dave's dick, who knows...

But they refuse to hear someone's critique unless it's totally pro-Dave no matter how bad the subject matter may be...

But I'm excited and I like what I see so far, but Dave needs to step it up in some places...

Yeah, but he sang in the right register for the songs, his voice was powerful, and he had some nice short screams worked out...

You could tell he had put in some effort...

I have to agree with the whiney bitch here (Elvis).

Dave didn't do Hear About it Later justice.

It sounds like the band worked hard in rehearsing a song they haven't played live since 1981 and Dave is....well...he doesn't exactly butcher it but he kinda "killed the moment" if you will by throwing in the high registers that even the studio version never had.

Its like "Dave, come on man, WTF???"

I'm willing to give him a pass since this was the first attempt at singing the song live in many years, but I agree. Dave was the weak link on this one. Love the fact they played it though.

So this is love

OK guys stop bitching about Dave 10% on Hear about it later...VH might fall on your comments and never play it again live....

And what the fuck is that dumb move he does with his hands??

Like come on Dave, what happened to your coolness?

He was way cooler on the 07-08 tour.

I dont think VH will pull HAIL from the setlist because it's a fan favorite ---- but I do think Eddie needs to have a sit-down with Dave and tell him to cut it out with the high register that isn't even in the original studio version of the song !!

I saw shows on the 2007-08 tour and Dave wasnt using the high register nearly as much as this tour. Sometimes his new ideas DO NOT work so well and we need a guy like Eddie who can reign him in a bit.

The headset mic and dancing floor doesn't bother me ---- although I wouldnt mind if Dave ditched both of them soon.

I also think the setlist needs another "quiet moment" besides the intro rap to ICM --- perhaps a cool rendition of Dave's solo song "Damn Good" ??

He'll get better...fuck I fucking love this song...I mean to me this song is 90% guitar and 10% vocals...When they play it live I won't even care about Dave's vocal on this one, cause I've waited so long to hear it live....

Agree just because Dave's developed his higher register more recently doesn't necessarily mean he has to use it all the time... and yeah, he gets a pass for not having sung HAIL in 30 years. One imagines it will get (much) better as the tour goes on. The band is NAILING it though, so good to hear! :killer:
